wow I was six years old. I wish I was of adult age for the era of Elliott Smith. Now all I have is youtube to hopefully find some ripped VHS footage of him.
It's ridiculous how he can play the solo while sustaining the rhythm on all his song, but this song is fucking hard to play and he can still do it. My theory, Elliott Smith was a robot designed to play the guitar and sing amazingly.
the song itself isn't hard, it's just hard to make it sound nice. since elliott sings really high and the guitar is really sparse, you gotta have both to sound full. anyways, to play the solo and the main riff with only one guitar is extremely hard on the fingers... i gave up a while ago. it hurt my fingers SO BAD.
The fact that he could write such an amazing song and then forget about it is kind of a testament to the extent of his musical genius in and of itself. Words just can't say.
@mrhinsliy i don't think he forgot it, i just think he didn't think it was worth releasing. he was very self-deprecating and critical of his writing. I think it's a testament to his genius that he could think this song wasn't good enough to be released, and also that he incorporates the solo into the live version. purely beautiful and amazing
Does anyone know if there is audio from this concert? Not just a rip of the audio from this video? This is one of my favorite Elliott songs, and I would love to have audio of it's true roots, before it was on Basement or any of the bootlegs. It would basically make me an incredibly happy person. :)
To the people who are asking why he didn't realease it sooner, it's because he completely forgot that he wrote it! Charlie from sweet adeline sent him a mix of unreleased songs while he was recording Basement, which sparked his interest in it again. Believe it or not, that's true. Pretty cool.
i just found out that during this time period he was also playing "easy way out" live with completely different lyrics. so thats what another song performed four years before release. i LOVE when artists do that. it makes the live performance that much more "valuable."
possibly the most beautiful song ever written, and this is probably the most beautiful performances ever. damn this song just makes me so emotional. notice the audience is dead silent... a rarity for him at that time. i imagine they were in awe.
well i wouldnt say HE released it in 04... most of what is new to us is from the late 90s. i think he was just tediously working on something perfect from inside his head. i wish he got to finish it.
Wow...New Moon may be the most anticipated underground/indie rock album release of 2007. May 8, people! Although I'm sure you Smith fans already pre-ordered your copies.
He was the greatest songwriter of the 1990s. Easily. Nobody comes close to having his songwriting talent. Others will argue that Cobain was better--and Cobain was a genius songwriter himself--but even they'll realize the truth sooner or later.
Listen to the garbage demos on the Nirvana box set "With The Lights Out" and then listen New Moon.... it speaks for itself. If your best friend wrote those songs you would say they were awful. Smith was a better guitarist, singer, musician, lyricist, songwriter, and person. Cobain spent all his time being famous, while Elliott spent his time trying to make beautiful music.
its ok man, we're all here for a reason. just listen and know that you're not alone, he felt the same way you do. if i wasn't who i was, his music wouldn't mean what it does to me. remember that.

It's "One Way Love I Took For Ours" as in referencing a relationship with a girl.

an amazing song fully developed this early on, wonder why it wasn't it on the earlier releases.
i always interpreted "one way love I took for hours" as referencing his later drug troubles.
