Today is January 19, 2012 & it's been about 12 years since she passed away & I didn't know this. I've grown up watching her in TV shows & this is such a shock to me, she's so wonderful. I am officially sad.
I'm 41 and Madeline Kahn is STILL my favourite comedy actress of all time...still. I mourn her death, but I'm so grateful we have Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, High Anxiety, History of the World, Clue, Betsies Wedding, Sherlocks Holmes Younger Brother and many other movies she was in! She was amazing!
Madeline Kahn was amazing. As for the person commenting on the "operatic mode" If you had any clue about Sondheim, musical style, or vocal and musical range, you would understand why they are singing the way they are. It's totally appropriate in this setting.
a fantastically good interpretation -- yes the tempo may be a bit slowish -- who *cares*, it's Madeline freaking KAHN! I think the definitive interpretation though (at least, according to Sondheim himself) is by Veanne Cox. This is not really a patter song, each word really should have a definite pitch, not be just spoken. Veanne Cox sings *every pitch as written* and it's brilliant, don't know if it's on YouTube or not.
She was taken from us way too early; this talented actress and songstress, Madeline Kahn. Shown here in a concert version of Sondheim's "(Not) Getting Married Today" from the musical 'Company', she shows the strength and stamina needed to perform the ever-so-smart and wordy lyrics the composer is, most rightly, known for.
The first time I saw this concert, I had no idea who was in it. I literally squealed and clapped (all for myself) when Madeline Kahn was revealed. I'd never heard the song before, and I nearly fell off the sofa. I've seen so many others do this song, but I think Madeline does it the best by far. And her eyes - she hardly blinks; it's amazing.
Madeline Kahn continues to astound and delight us, long after her premature departure from this plane. This is an EXTREMELY difficult song to do, more than most, and she sang it like it was written for her. Brava, Madeline, you left SUCH a legacy! We love you!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
shes not at the original beat of this song .. it ruins it because shes not as fast and crazy as Amy should be. her voice isnt right for Amy either and she barely conveys the emotion that needs to be conveyed in this song. shes not a good fit for the song. watch the Not getting married today- Company OBC 1970 video from BestArtsSondheim. it shows how this should be sang by the original amy.
@simsrule347 While you're right that she is singing it much slower than the original beat, I think her voice is perfect for this role. Slightly shaky, but trying to remain in control, like someone going a little crazy because things aren't going the way they want them to. Besides, I think it was just the band that slowed the tempo because I'm pretty sure I heard her try to speed it up a couple times.
I'm sitting here watching this, and for a second, I forgot that this brilliant person had to leave us so early. Please! Give us our Madeline back! Take bieber instead!
@hippieglitter sorry but your girl is screaming and hiding under tables Ms. Kahn most dramatic scene is grently disposing of her bo kay. So lets just agree to disagree. You stay on Ms. Laws page and I'll stay on Ms. Kahn's. After all they are both marvelous singers!
I hadn't seen her until I saw Cosby earlier this decade, (she had already left us by then), but whenever I see her perform, I shed a tear for everyone who misses her, including myself.... They just don't make performers like this anymore.
I love this woman. she is absolutely amazing as a vocalist and an actress. Definitely one of kind. She goes beyond technique and discipline. She's Madeline Kahn and no one can imitate that.
Actually in the original production, Beth Howland sung it much faster (as Sondheim wanted) and Heather Laws in the '06 revival did as well. I think Kahn sung it well, just not in the way it was originally intended.
WOW. What a talent. I was never able to do this song because I always ran out of air and my words would get off...then I saw Madeline Kahn do it and afterwards I sang it again and got it right! I love this woman. May she rest in peace.
NOBODY, absolutely NOBODY can sing this like Kahn did. If there had been Tonys for one-time performances in a special Broadway presentation, she should have gotten one. Utter brilliance. She nailed not only the incredibly challenging technical requirement of the song, but the acting nuances. God bless her and may she rest in peace.
As a singer myself, I can tell you there is NOTHING more terrifying than performing a song like this...you are in complete free-fall from the get-go and just pray that you stay on top of the wave!!!
I like both this version and Carol Burnett's version but they are definitely portrayed very differently Madeline looks like she'll freak out any second where as Carol is going crazy during the song. No matter what it's an amazing song!
I know Carol Burnett is the standard for thsi song, but I like Madeline Kahn's version waaaaaay more. She plays most of it very small and, in doing so, ramps up the tension. Rather than wild, insane comedy we get a woman who is really, really about to snap. haha. I love it.
In additition to the effective business pointed out by others notice the way MK tries to subtley rid herself of the bouquet (2:31). Thank you, Madeline.
I love her change in tone when she sings "I'm not well, so I'm not getting married," like now she's really putting her foot down. She really knows how less is more. So talented!
I agree whole heartily. I enjoy everybody's different versions of it. But hers is definitely my favorite. Even the lady in the beginning helps set the tone as one of those woman who loves to get everybody married. lol
I was so blessed to see this great show 3 times in previews with the original cast. Thank you for posting this! Brings back great memories, and Ms kahn was a true genius, as, of course, is Sondheim.
