You "can't" beat Defender :( I stayed home from school one day in the 80's and played Defender on the 2600 for about 10 hours straight on the one game with a friend with a score that was through the roof and a whole stack of lives. I was so good at it that day that i couldn't die so i just wrote down the score and turned it off.
@MrMethadrine it's called... having an imagination, sorry we couldn't transport the gaming technology of the future to the present day just so we could impress dwerbs like you.
Do these aliens follow the rules of war? no bombing civilian cities or some shit? good thing that red mutant isn't as kamikaze as the japs or towel heads, they would deff pull some 9/11 shit for you trying to hide among the innocent, lol, thank god for law abiding aliens!
I hated the 2600 version because you hat to fly all the way to the bottom just to do the smart bomb. lol back then people were so desperate to play video games they would settle for anything other than pong.
This was my favourite game EVER for Atari ! I was playing for like what seemed HOURS one time and was about to roll the score keeper over to 0000000 again (1 million?) and my Dad comes in all pissed about something and gets mad because the light wasn't on (Since I had been playing for hours, I couldn't get up and turn the light on when it got dark since there was no pause on these game back then! LOL). Well, being about 15 at the time... CON'T IN NEXT POST......
CON'T FROM ABOVE.....(OR BELOW)... it didn't occur to me to NOT plug the game into the outlet that the wall switch controls. So when Dad tried to turn the light on via the wall switch........ POOF ! There goes my 960,000 point-6 hour game ! I never again tried to get a million points, LOL..
Even though 2600 Defender was loosely based on the arcade game, everyone I knew got addicted to this. I spent an entire summer playing this and still play it occassionally. The Atari 8-bit version REALLy rocked!
Only an inbred, genetically degenerate retarded banjo-playing hillbilly with three rotting teeth would need instructions to "beat" this sad-sack port of that great (and VERY challenging) arcade classic, Defender. The first day I had this cartridge (1982), well... unlike the arcade game (which I maxed out at 150,000 points, my personal record) I could sit and play one game of this goofy, bastardized Atari version for hours on end, until my eyes glazed over and I got a charley horse in my thumb.
Man...I remember Vestron Video from back then, but could never afford their videos and the rental place never carried them. Ah well, better late than never :D
lol....I never knew there was so much strategy and such to this game. This was the first ever video game I played. But from then on...my hatred for schmups just grew and grew.
I have this and lets just say its another dud that I truly appreciate! (Im talking about other peoples opinion calling it a dud, not necessarily my opinion).
Holy crap, this was one of the first games I got for the system like 25+ years ago.
The VERY first game I got for the Atari 2600 was "Lazerblast." As a 7 year old kid back then, I always wondered why the HELL the game never looked as good as the artwork on the box advertising it.
I just commented the same thing on one of the laser tag clips! It was one of the first games I got, casue it looked so cool on the box. I was bored with it after life 15 minutes. Man was I pissed! At least I had Asteroids to fall back on. :)
@CCampLI I'm 38 yrs old now and I remember how much I dreamed of owning an Atari console as a kid. The graphics are poor compared to today's games but It forced us to use a bit of imagination in order to make it fit into what the box artwork was picturing - that was the magic of Atari and all arcade games. I wonder how nice would be if they released all these classic games re-vamped using today's high bit resolution but maintaining the structure of the game...
haha people needed help playing defender? i guess video games were new so they didn't really understand the concept... although i remember understanding it so i guess it was just the idiot teenagers

The arcade versions didn't have a city for the background, just a mountain like valley.

Seriously.
The box was a huge deception.
That Lazerblast game was the biggest let-down I ever had when it came to games that totally sucked.
Best game.......DigDug.
Had tons of fun.

A quality VCS arcade port.
People justly bag on Atari for travesties like VCS Pac-Man, but sometimes they came correct. I played the heck out of this cart back in the day.

I loved this game when I was 6 years old, but I always thought it to be irritating that my ship would go invis everytime I'd fire.

pacman5698 4 years ago
I played that game for years but didn't know that holding on to a hostage kept landers from taking more humanoids.
I prefered this to the arcade version which had like a dozen nobs, switches, and buttons. Stargate was even worse! Joysticks all the way!
jackbox1971 5 years ago 2
Of course this version of the game changed much of what the arcade edition was (namely putting you in the city).
