  • Nice! Thanks! Now the tricky part is how to create a "good" selection on the model.

@LourceyPhotography, can you show us a trick or two to create a mask based on the silhouette of the model? I think I saw once it was possible to create another layer, they make it b&w and somehow they converted it to a mask..

  • @jzantana No doubt -the selection is always the tricky part.

Not sure about the silhouette/mask thing. Never tried that.

  • Fantastic and now I understand it, thank you!

  • @christinedark99 Wonderful! It is a very powerful tool- best of luck.

  • Great job. After 2 hours looking at different videos this is the best!!! Very clear. Thanks.

  • @lufabsantos Glad to hear it helped!

  • WOW!!! nice and easy! THANK YOU!!!!

I look forward to know more functions of this great feature on photoshop CS5

    tHANK u!!!

  • @EdgardQuintero You are certainly welcome. Thanks for stopping by!

  • btw you can switch colors by just pressing "x"

  • @EphraimRodrigez Great tip - I probably under-use shortcut keys!

  • @LourceyPhotography i bought a Logitech G13 just for photoshop shortcuts

  • the layer mask make the eraser kind of pointless...

  • Great tutorial, ive seen loads of walkthroughs on masks and this is by far the most constructive and useful one ive seen so far. Thanks.

  • the problem I start to run into is the strands of hair. Some photos I do not want to edit that out and cringe when I have to basically give someone a hair cut.

  • @metaltwin320 Agreed- that is always tough. Check out this week's tutorial - the Quick Selection Tool might be exactly what you are looking for!

  • @metaltwin320 Yeah hair is tough- but the new way in CS5 is a little better. I did a tutorial on it recently if you are interested.

  • good job; nice vid for intro users

  • Nice tut here. It's always good for new PS users to see quality videos broke down into essential components like you did. There are a lot of good AND bad videos out there. Thankfully, yours fall into the good side. Please keep up the good work.

    Well done here.

  • @randoo53 Thanks for the kind words!

  • Thanks very much for this. This is the first time I have understood anything about layers. Normally explanations seem to assume that you know a lot more about the subject and move far too quickly, clicking back and forth on tools and boxes that they seem to think you already know how to use. I've subscribed.

  • @mucalinda Glad to hear it helped. Check back next week for selection tutorial - gonna be a good one!

  • Great tutorial for a beginner, but I feel that you could have gone a little farther and applied to to dodging or burning etc. What is the button on PS Mac that allows you to see in fullscreen your layer mask?

  • @ajayalmighty Layer masking is a huge topic - could definitely fill two or three videos with how to do it. Just trying to break down the basics and introduce people to the concept. Thanks for checking out the video- more to come!

  • Another useful tutorial. I already knew this stuff, but it is essential information for beginning PS users, and you explained it very well. If you ever revisit this topic, you might want to mention one can achieve incremental masking / revealing by using gray values, instead of black & white.

  • For a future video, if you combine layer masks with "Blend If" layer options, you'll make people's heads explode. ;)

  • @MasonDixonPhoto Well we certainly don't want people's heads exploding - do we!!?? :) PS can be very overwhelming, so I'm trying to break it up into very small pieces. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

  • @LourceyPhotography I understand completely. I've been using PS for about 20 years, and I am STILL learning new things about it all the time... which is why I watch video tutorials like the excellent ones you produce!

  • Excellent as usual. Thank you for making it clear to me. Honestly, I couldn't get this as clear as that from the books I've read.

  • @RubinGnoni Glad to hear it!

  • @LourceyPhotography Surely one of the easiest Photoshop tutorials ever! I'm definitely subbing. Tnx, dude!

  • I learn so much by watching your videos! THANK YOU!!

  • Great video, thanks.

  • Great vid, thank you, looking forward to the next one. :)

  • sure helped me. :)

  • Awesome video thanks !

  • @ViewedVideo wow- that was a fast comment. I just uploaded it a few minutes ago! Glad you liked it.
