Statistically it is a fact that the number one reason that middle class Americans declare bankruptcy is due to medical expenses. This week as Blue Cross and Blue shield are announcing 39% increases on premiums while reporting record earnings, fewer Americans can afford coverage. The Federal budget can't support Medicare and Social Security on its current trajectory and therefore reform is paramount.

  • I don't understand the phrase "government takeover" or "socialized medicine" as it applies to this legislation. In the end we will have a moderate bill that simply prevents health insurance companies for denying coverage on the basis of pre-existing conditions and largely reduce our deficit. I understand that you're displeased with the state of affairs as they currently stand. But we can't tackle our problems unless we are willing to admit that they exist in the first place.

    Let's first do something about legal and pharmacutical expense. Our best in the

    world medical professionals have a potential lawsuit hanging over their head

    every time they lift a scalpel. Frivolous lawsuits cost BBBBBillions paid to

    attorneys and their ilk. Congress is all friggin lawyers so that won't change.

    And government sides with the drug industry that sells to Canada for a

    fraction of it does to the U.S.

  • Health reform is NOT tort reform. Out of all the money spent on health care, only a fraction is attributed to legal expenses. Providing affordable coverage for the millions of Americans does not equal tort reform. It simply will not bring costs down for the average consumer.

  • The confusion here stems from two very different concepts, positive rights and negative rights. Our Constitution generally protects negative rights. It prevents you from being harmed (by the gov't) when you try to attain something for yourself. A positive right would be something that must be provided to you. In our system, those are limited to the aspects of due process afforded to someone the state is seeking to deprive of life or liberty - trial by jury, counsel, speedy trial, etc...

  • You are required to have auto insurance and that wasn't in the constitution. There are a lot of things we have today that were not in the constitution. The constitution does allow for HC for all if congress votes it in. It's simply the right thing to do. WWJD?

  • Health care is a service that is provided by other people. If you say that health care is a right, you are saying that you have a right to those services.

    You could argue that a doctor or trained medical professional has a moral or even legal obligation to provide first aid and emergency treatment to save a life or limb but that is a far cry from saying that person is also obligated to give you an annual physical or clear up your rash.

  • Well since you ask . . . while it being a "right" is perhaps debatable, the concept is, since no one in the middle class can afford the cost of catastrophic health care, eg. being hit by a bus would bankrupt most people if health care were done as a "pay-as-you-go" basis, same for cancer and any number of maladies, insurance is needed. The next question then asks how you provide this insurance. And the following question asks if it's best with or without profit for the middle-man.

While gum, running shoes, guns and cabbages are best produced by private enterprise, police, national defense, water, electricity and health care are best provided when *we the people* under the collective known as government, act to have these services provided for us directly. This works quite well in Japan, Canada, Europe etc

  • Public utilities have a long history in many countries, including the US. Ask Californians about public utilities vs Enron. :-)

    HMO profits in the billions means that billions of dollars are being siphoned away from actually putting the money to work.

    For evidence, pick your stat really. Cost, access, mortality. Remembering that the US is the richest country in the world, it is 38th in infant mortality. It's behind Costa Rica! Why do Canadians on average live 2 years longer than Americans?

    HMO's are a specific type of insurance plan, not an insurance company. One of the largest providers of HMO's is Kaiser and they are non-profit. Also, your assertion that profits equate to money siphoned away and not put to work shows an amazing ignorance of how capital works

    Life expectancy is a fairly meaningless measure in this discussion as there are so many factors that contribute to it.

    Where would you rather have cancer, US or Canada?

    Cancer survival rates in the US exceed those in Canada by a wide margin. When you get sick, you want the best care. That care is in the US.

  • And you're right. And yet mortality rates for cancer between Canada and the US run neck and neck. The issue is not quality but access and cost. US hospitals (for those who can afford it) provide excellent care. However, when looking at *all* Americans, access is part of quality and for "average joe", you're better off getting care where you can be treated. In all advanced countries but the US, no one goes broke for need of cancer treatment. Helping middle class Americans is good for us all.

    No one is helped by a gov't program that bankrupts us.

  • I agree with your last statement. As for cancer mortality rates according to stats I've seen, OECD 2004, top 16 countries for cancer mortality, Holland is number 1 with 433 deaths per 100,000. The US is 9th with 321.9 per 100,000, then Australia - 298.9, Norway - 289.4, France - 286.1. Canada's not on the list. Your assertion is not supported in this set of data.

    Satisfaction is much lower amongst people who have actually had to make claims.

The stats you cite reflect the incidence of cancer in a specific country, not the chance of survival once cancer is diagnosed. The US leads the world in survival rates for most forms of cancer.

  • Points taken and agreed. However the elephant in the room remains access to health care. Surely America is not such a selfish country that it believes those without money deserve to die sooner than those with money. Millions are without insurance and these "poor" are not just the "street drunks". More often they are the working poor, people who, perhaps uneducated, are hard working, work two jobs to get by and often go to the grave before their time. They deserve better.

  • No one denies that some people have problems accessing health care in the US. The problem is how to solve the problem. Kennedy believed that this problem (as just about every problem he ever encountered except a certain car accident) required greater government involvement. Many others believe just the opposite.

People around the world come to the US for life-saving treatment. Nothing in this world is free - and if you try to shape the US healthcare system to mimic another system the world will lose all of its benefits. Socialized healthcare is like communism, good in theory, but unsustainable in reality.

The irony is that more expensive treatments do not yield better results than less expensive treatments. When and how can we offer reward for a medical system that saves lives and regenerates health WHILE saving money? Treatments developed based on financial ROI are a core flaw in our system. When we reward health and well being, we will transcend this issue.
