we bought 2 hamsters from a pet shop a few years ago and the pet shop worker said they were both boys but in a couple of months i looked inside the cage and the hamster had given birth to 6 babys but she ate one because it was porley or something. we then seperated the mummy and daddy hamsters but she got pregnant again and had a total of 13 baby hamsters. we sold a few but not all of them in time before the babys started having babys so we had like 50 hamsters in the end hahahha,

god i remember my girly have 3 litters we only lost 4 out of the 3 litters 11 the first time 10 the second and 7 the last lot, i think she ate 3 and one escaped and we never found him :( to this day i never knew what happened to him, that was going back 10 years ago i do miss them though they where great hamsters

You CAN NOT touch newborn hamsters untill 14 days old or the babies will be KILLED by the mother, I was told this when I used to work on that farm. By the people on the farm who worked with me.

If the litter is not weaned and you touch them then most of the time the mom will not smell her scent and might not care for them which is one way they will die, or she feels they are a threat so she will eat them.

Once the mother hamster is visibly pregnant you can't clean the cage until the babies are 14 days old or the mother may cannibalize or abandon the babies.
