@peppedeleo Dont know about your hardware, but I am a inspector, and I had to learn alot about Magnetics... that said, you should be good, your randomizing the magnetic domains in the material... wikipedia a little and you well be more comfortable.
@buddyeagle A Ham is an amatuer radio operator. Assigned certain fequencies..the signals can be world-wide using a powerful enough home base. This is how users 'phoned' each other before the advent of the satellite and cell phone age. There are also mobile radio units. Sadly, we are a dying breed. KBY1561 out.
Pre-recorded reel to reel tapes are still one of the highest fidelity sources around IF undamaged.
What Kurt Glaser does not mention is that magnetized heads damage tapes irreversibly. The high frequency information ON THE TAPE can be diminished and/or noise introduced on the tape itself.
Also, he meant to say the playback head is on the far right. Three head decks are L to R: erase head, record head, playback head. This deck in this video has 4 heads, the far left is reverse play.
they are still available from quite a few sources and they are not expensive. I've got the same one, 20 years and still going strong. Google it and you will see that they are plenty of Pro audio shops that still have stuff for us reelers...
There is a guy on Youtube, I cant find him again/now, he plays the guitar and he records with reel to reel, you can see the reel to reel recording equipment in the background. Anyone know this guy's channel?
Anybody know how to repair HI 8 tapes? Not just the torn tapes, but .. and I hope I don't offend anybody with this . . Hi 8 tapes are AWFUL. They break so easy. I have a few Hi8 tapes where the door will not fully shut. I wish there was a way to repair it. If anybody knows, send me a message or hit reply to this post. I want to do it myself, because some of my tapes are personal. Not nasty, but just . . stupid embarassing with what me and my friends used to do at work. Wanna keep private.
Thanks for posting this. I got a demagnetizer awhile back but have been nervous about permanently magnetizing the heads of my deck. After I did this, I noticed immediate clarity in the high end frequencies that I haven't heard in quite some time. Thanks again!!!
wow, two minutes + just to get to the process!

I have a gray colored Nortronics demagnetizer that is for video heads. Will this damage the heads in any way ie: the stronger magnetic field?

do u have the reel to reel off or on? thanks
jon4ford 3 years ago
You always demagnatize with the deck off. Don't ever leave it on it can create permanent magnatism in the deck and or noise in recording/playback.
