Great song, incredible vocals. A lot of people criticise Graham for "not having the right look" - as in, he didn't look or sound exactly like Ronnie Dio - or for "being the wrong man to front Rainbow" - hardly his fault that Dio fucked off to Black Sabbath while Blackmore dithered, yet again, about the direction of his band. What they really hate is that Graham made them look like bigger fucking idiots than usual on a karaoke machine, because no-one, NO-ONE, can sing his epic songs like he can.
@LanDio1981 It is possible that Bonnet had some songs on Line-up in mind for the follow-up Rainbow album he never got to do. The rainbow running through the album cover and the rainbow effect on the front of his drummer's kit in the music videos are good hints!
graham bonnet, jhon lord, cozy powel!!!!! does it get any better????? fantastic singer, one of the greatest of all times!!!!! thanks for this gourgeos music!!!
Mr. Bonnet has a GRET voice. Perfect for the pre-hardrock era. Stupid look killed his career .Almost everybody else is going pink at that time. Like and love the guy a lot. Just a month or too....
@rpd801 Yep, perhaps the best rock drummer ever...up up above the overrated Bonham, Alex, or even Phil Collins. He's in level with Moon and Peart only..
Yep, I remember. In my humble opinion, Graham Bonnet clearly massively influenced all the Hair Metal bands of the decade to come. In retrospect, I'd say everybody from Def Leppard to Whitesnake to Ratt to Warrant to Great White were copying that sound to one degree or another.
@pinz2022 Yeah the ones I said were all like Power, and or melodic metal, although Virgin steele is more like classic metal. And if you like Graham bonnet's vocal's check them out, because they have very close sounding singer's,especially on Firewind's Burning earth/Between heaven, and hell album's,or check out Artension's Forces of nature song, the vocal simularities are uncanny.
CHECK OUT ONLY ONE WOMAN BY THE MARBLES. THAT SONG IS THE REASON HE WAS CHOSEN FOR RAINBOW BY RITCHIE. GRAHAM HAS QUITE RESPECTABLY NICE LONG HAIR IN THE VIDEO!
(WHY DOES EVERYBODY KEEP DISSING RITCHIE-HE INTRODUCED US TO IAN GILLAN,GLENN HUGHES,DAVID COVERDALE,RONNIE JAMES DIO,JOE LYNN TURNER AND DOOGIE WHITE-ALL GREAT VOCALISTS! HOW MANY OF THEM WOULD HAVE MADE IT IF IT HADN'T BEEN FOR THEIR CONNECTIONS WITH RITCHIE-I WONDER!
HE WAS NOT SACKED BY BLACKMORE BECAUSE OF HIS HAIR! HE WAS HIRED BY BLACKMORE DESPITE HIS SHORT HAIIR,BECAUSE OF HIS POWERFUL VOICE,BUT WHEN THEY WENT TO RECORD A FOLLOW UP TO DOWN TO EARTH HE COULDN'T COME UP WITH ANY LYRICS. HE SAYS HE CHOSE TO LEAVE BECAUSE ALL HIS MATES WERE LEAVING-COZY POWELL AND DON AIREY,AND BLACKMORE HAS NEVER SAID ANYTHING OTHER THAN NO-ONE CHOSE TO LEAVE RAINBOW! THIS SINGLE WAS CUT AS A SOLO AS A PEACE OFFERING I BELIEVE! IT SOUNDS TO ME LIKE RITCHIE HAD SOME IMPUT
@jonnyrainbow1 as far as I know and have read in various places Bonnet was sacked because he was pissed during the Monsters of Rock show in 1980. Bonnet also didn't have the vocal abilities live of RJD which meant that Ritchie would have got rid of him sooner rather than later. To be fair though I wouldn't have replaced him with Turner because I think that Bonnet was a much better rock singer.
This was my favourite song of 1981 (the year I got married the 1st time round) and it sure as hell would STILL feature in my top 10 today. Sheer genius!
Are you sure he's called 'bomber'? He's a jazz basist the rest of the time and speaks somewhat disdainly of rock music in an interview when they began talking about whitesnake
We're going back a long way, but I'm pretty sure it's right. It was in the Whitesnake program from Monsters of Rock in '83 IIRC. Whether it was an ironic name given to him by the band I couldn't say, and maybe old age is playing tricks with my memory, but I can't think of anyone I could be getting him mixed up with.
@WookietheChowChow Wow. That is debatable. No doubt he has a brilliant voice - as I was listening to the vid I thought to myself, `damn, I wish I could sing like that.`
But have you heard John Miles sing Music was My First Love ?
I`m not disagreeing with you. If I had half Bonnet`s voice I`d be happy !
Thanks for posting, i never heard this studio version, only the version that appeared on Alcatrazz's 'Live Sentence." NIce video, and a really good power-pop song (for that time,) if i dare call it that, to some of you : ) Anyway, of course Bonnet rocks! Not a stellar career by standards perhaps, but he shows right here why he's revered even today. Smooth but powerful and skilled voice.
God we were so lucky with music in the 80s and we didn't know it. What the hell has happened? please tell me that class music like this will come back around again.
You never know. 80's bands are getting back together and playing gigs. If not at least we can go onto youtube and remeber about the good old days. Christ it makes me realise how old I am!!!
You Tube is fantastic for re-living a mis-spent youth. I often lose 2-3 hours at a time just browsing through old music videos. There are some damn good pub-bands around my area (Portsmouth) that do good covers of 80s and 90s rock classics, and they're usually free to watch....
@SidSid51 Unfortunately there is no turning back mate...You said it above. We were lucky to have lived and witnessed this wonderful era of rock....Aint coming back.
@apolloton1 - Yeah I have some really great memories from that time as I'm sure you do too. I can live on them I guess, it shows the importance of getting out there and having fun in your younger years doesn't it? Memories do fade and become a bit distorted but a quick hour or two on YouTube brings it all flooding back. I must admit to a tear or two now and then.
I loved Graham Bonnet in the 80s, i remember this song as if it were yesterday. What a fantastic line up of musicians playing too, i have been lucky enough to have seen them all live thru Whitesnake and Rainbow, and they are all brilliant - happy memories!

Probably the one song Ritchie Blackmore wished he could play guitar to had he not fired Graham Bonnet.

@LanDio1981 I used to think it was from the Rainbow album that Bonnet did in '79!

Apparently not but, maybe it was an idea Bonnet had for Blackmore but Blackmore shut it down knowing the personality he had.
