Trumpets are tuned to Bb. My guess is that she learned it from sheet music that wasn't transposed, thus she's a major 2nd below the track she's playing to.

The fact that she doesn't seem shaken by the fact that she's off mean either that she's tone deaf and was oblivious, or that she knew but didn't stop 'cuz she's a pro, and she was in the moment. Either way, this video is all kinds of awesome. :-D

I think she picked up her C trumpet when she meant to pick up her B-flat one. If she were an experience musician, she would have heard the discrepancy in the first note or two and realized what was happening and would have tried transposing on the spot, playing everything down a step from the way she had learned it. (You know, maybe one of the other contestants exchanged her instrument for one in the other key without her knowing!)

Itt seems quite obvious that the background music and her trumpet were playing in different keys. I'm a former professional musician but trumpet is not one of my instruments. However, I do know how to shift keys during a song. Why she did not do this is beyond me. And the fact that I heard no audience reaction (murmuring, laughter, applause) surprises me.

And once again, she isn't necessarily playing it incorrectly.. just out of tune/ wrong key compared to the recording. In this case caused by the fact she isn't tuned at all. Without the recording, it would probably sound fine as long as she's in tune to herself.

I think it's possible that the track she was playing to was going at a higher key than she was used to playing. Same thing happened to Van Halen on their recent reunion tour when the keyboard started playing "Jump" a little faster than it should have.
