omg, i went and seen this movie when it first came out and it was so disappointed. granted i went into the movie with low expectations to begin with. first off they cut so much out of the movie that there was almost no character devlopment. secondly they cut and pieced so much stuff together that the movie went at such a break neck pace i swore i got whiplash! the idea for making avatar a movie is a good one this guy just went about it all wrong.
i loved the cartoon but hated the movie! m night took every thing out of the cartoon that made it great and came up with a really bad movie! come on at least find some good actors!! he spent so much time on the special affects and not enough time on the acting!!
@blackjack1416 Maybe so, but, Ringer was still unskilled enough that they needed hire someone else to do his fight scenes. Besides, some people (like me) could tell he wasn't doing it and it drew them out of the moment. A bad thing.

However, in a Japanese context when we use the term "Western" that tends to generally connote European/American (thought it *should* include Latin America, Africa...). My point is the cartoon characters don't look very East Asian to me, in other words they look Western. Big blue eyes and all that. But my other point is they don't have to correspond to any race that exists in reality - just like green haired, violet eyed anime characters don't. lol
@flyingapplesauce, right right, i get that there's an Inuit theme. The criticism has been that Asian actors were not cast for the main characters in the live action film. I'm just saying that should not have been a requirement because to me those characters in the cartoon look Western anyway.
wow this movie was a complete mess, the one thing i was seriously hoping for here was to at least see the cabbage man, i mean with the film trying to be so damn dark and the acting being terrible a simple slapstick moment with a run in between him and the main characters would have at least been enjoyable. i will say this though, as bad as the movie was, the soundtrack was just awesome, thanks to james newton howard for keeping me awake with a good score through this movie.

I can't believe people actually think this movie was good in its own right. There were no redeeming qualities about the movie. The script was badly written with very poor use of exposition. It's like Shyamalan never heard of "show don't tell". The acting was bad, but that might just be because of bad direction. The bending was turned into magic spells which is nothing like the show. And the fight scenes were bad for either lack of bending or too much unnecessary movements for bending.
The only thing that i like about the movie were the long takes in the fight scenes. Don't get me wrong i thought the fight scenes were horrible and i also thought it was unnecessary to put slow motion every two fucking seconds. But still, this movie was fucking horrible. Stupid M. Night Shyamalanstupidass.
I liked the movie. The only thing I hated about it was the absence of the kioshi warriors. But Shyamalan promises that they would appear in the sequal. AND I BELIEVE HIM!!!!!!
The critics are just cruel. I read an article in Entertainment Weekly, and it said on who's to blame for the movie. It said the actors, director, and FX are to blame. Also Owen Gleiberman ( the critic who made the article) also BLAMES THE ORIGINAL SERIES FOR EVER BEING CREATED!!!! He said that the show was just "a veritable trash compactor of familiar tropes and effects". If you want to watch it, JUST WATCH IT!!

I actually liked the movie a lot and I'm a HUGE fan of the cartoon. I expected there to be differences between the two, and obviously there was. BUT if you take the movie, and seperate it from the cartoon, it was still good in it's own right. One thing I really don't understand is why people are going crazy over the race thing. America isn't only white people, Africa isn't only black people, and China isn't only chinese people.. So why would the Avatar world be any different?
This scene was 10 X better than that earthbender vs fire nation soldiers scene. Why couldn't M shyamalan make the rest of the movie as good as this scene? FAIL
Love that clip. Noah Ringer's skill is undisputed. Also, as for the criticism of the characters' races: People seem to have the idea that the actors should be Asian, but the cartoon characters never struck me as corresponding to races which exist in reality. Their brown skin and light blue eyes is not suggestive of Asian to me, or anything else really. (Cartoon Katara looks *quite* Western I think.) As for its origins, the cartoon was an international effort from the start, not purely Asian.

According to Shyamalan, the "mispronunciation" of the names of some of the characters (Aang, Sokka, Avatar, etc) is because he wished to 'honor the source material' and use the Asian pronunciation. A scene involving the Kyoshi Warriors was filmed but removed,due to the director's belief that it was a long story and would only distract from the movie's main story.Another "giant change" Shyamalan made was to limit the Fire Bender's source of fire so they wont be too powerful. Only the highest can.

@BalmungSama0 By using catapults to toss giant fireballs. As soon as the fireballs made impact to the place they're invading, they use those burning fireballs as their firebending source. That's where they get their fire source.

Making it so they need a source of fire was a stupid change. In the show they could make fire themselves, so it made sense that they could conquer all of these places.

@BalmungSama0 Probably because waterbenders need water to bend, airbenders need air to bend, and earthbenders need earth to bend. Shyamalan then decided to change the firebenders (needing fire to firebend) so they could be equally powerful as the other benders. Unfortunately, the audience didn't appreciate it. At least the hightest firebenders (like Iroh) can make fire appear out of nowhere.

Technology has came a loooong way for this movie to look like this. They had almost 160 million in budget to work with on this movie. The clip I just saw looked like something I did on adobe photoshop and flash. Based on the cartoon and movies like the matrix, spider-man, harry potter, and so on, this could have been put together A LOT BETTER. I'm probably gonna watch this on bootleg.

There Are Better Scenes in the movie. I mean I liked this one and all... but man there was some stellar scenes that blew this and the katara zuko fight out the water.
This is terrible. In the show, bending involves a physicality to direct the energy -- if you wanted an element to do something, you had to move yourself in a similar way. The element becomes an extension of the bender. But in this clip, Aang is just flailing around, and the water is just happening to do whatever it needs to. There's no sense of connection between action and result. And don't even get me started on the abysmal wire work that I guess is supposed to be his "airbending."
@DorkmanScott You got that right, in comparison the actual show was better when Aang shoots blast of air with no slow mo cameras to give an instinctual detales. this looks like "Aang" is doing bale dancing and come on Zuko part sucks the character that"s playing him hopefully wont ruin this movie.

im sorry, i REALLY wanted to ignore it but 0:070:20 and was not very good . Everything else was good, im with it but the transitions from the ground to the air was not fluent enough. I don't know how old you are. In my case, when I saw the cartoon I was just a kid. Now I am quite a man. So I will love this movie if it is not as childish as the cartoon is.

I can't believe people actually think this movie was good in its own right. There were no redeeming qualities about the movie. The script was badly written with very poor use of exposition. It's like Shyamalan never heard of "show don't tell". The acting was bad, but that might just be because of bad direction. The bending was turned into magic spells which is nothing like the show. And the fight scenes were bad for either lack of bending or too much unnecessary movements for bending.

The only thing that i like about the movie were the long takes in the fight scenes. Don't get me wrong i thought the fight scenes were horrible and i also thought it was unnecessary to put slow motion every two fucking seconds. But still, this movie was fucking horrible. Stupid M. Night Shyamalanstupidass.

I liked the movie. The only thing I hated about it was the absence of the kioshi warriors. But Shyamalan promises that they would appear in the sequal. AND I BELIEVE HIM!!!!!!

The critics are just cruel. I read an article in Entertainment Weekly, and it said on who's to blame for the movie. It said the actors, director, and FX are to blame. Also Owen Gleiberman ( the critic who made the article) also BLAMES THE ORIGINAL SERIES FOR EVER BEING CREATED!!!! He said that the show was just "a veritable trash compactor of familiar tropes and effects". If you want to watch it, JUST WATCH IT!!

I actually liked the movie a lot and I'm a HUGE fan of the cartoon. I expected there to be differences between the two, and obviously there was. BUT if you take the movie, and seperate it from the cartoon, it was still good in it's own right. One thing I really don't understand is why people are going crazy over the race thing. America isn't only white people, Africa isn't only black people, and China isn't only chinese people.. So why would the Avatar world be any different?

Love that clip. Noah Ringer's skill is undisputed. Also, as for the criticism of the characters' races: People seem to have the idea that the actors should be Asian, but the cartoon characters never struck me as corresponding to races which exist in reality. Their brown skin and light blue eyes is not suggestive of Asian to me, or anything else really. (Cartoon Katara looks *quite* Western I think.) As for its origins, the cartoon was an international effort from the start, not purely Asian.

The Fire Nation was obviously meant to be Chinese. the architecture, the culture, the ships, armour, etc. The airbenders were obviously Tibetan. Not sure which Asian culture the earth Kingdom was, but it was obviously asian.
In the movie, the entire water tribe is Inuit, except the two main characters, who are white. WTF?!

@happybirthdayhomie Why do you assume kids movies are bad? The show was aimed at kids, it it was fantastically written and performed. Disney in the 90s made great movies. Pixar aims itself at kids. Hayao Miyazaki aims at kids. Many great movies. Saying "its a kids movie" is no excuse. Kids aren't idiots.
This movie should've never seen attempted. You can't keep the story the same as the TV show. Its made for episodes. It just wouldn't work as a movie unless there were some serious rewrites.

According to Shyamalan, the "mispronunciation" of the names of some of the characters (Aang, Sokka, Avatar, etc) is because he wished to 'honor the source material' and use the Asian pronunciation. A scene involving the Kyoshi Warriors was filmed but removed,due to the director's belief that it was a long story and would only distract from the movie's main story.Another "giant change" Shyamalan made was to limit the Fire Bender's source of fire so they wont be too powerful. Only the highest can.

No nation would ever lose to these guys. Air; its all around you. Water; if you're near a source, there isn't much the fire nation can do (and the water benders live at the poles). @BalmungSama0 By using catapults to toss giant fireballs. As soon as the fireballs made impact to the place they're invading, they use those burning fireballs as their firebending source. That's where they get their fire source.

@Agumon90210 Which is still stupid, because those giant rocks are their huge weakspots. Put those out and they're powerless. And it limits how far they can move into their invasion site, since they can't get too far away from the rocks.
Making it so they need a source of fire was a stupid change. In the show they could make fire themselves, so it made sense that they could conquer all of these places.

@BalmungSama0 Probably because waterbenders need water to bend, airbenders need air to bend, and earthbenders need earth to bend. Shyamalan then decided to change the firebenders (needing fire to firebend) so they could be equally powerful as the other benders. Unfortunately, the audience didn't appreciate it. At least the hightest firebenders (like Iroh) can make fire appear out of nowhere.

Technology has came a loooong way for this movie to look like this. They had almost 160 million in budget to work with on this movie. The clip I just saw looked like something I did on adobe photoshop and flash. Based on the cartoon and movies like the matrix, spider-man, harry potter, and so on, this could have been put together A LOT BETTER. I'm probably gonna watch this on bootleg.

This is terrible. In the show, bending involves a physicality to direct the energy -- if you wanted an element to do something, you had to move yourself in a similar way. The element becomes an extension of the bender. But in this clip, Aang is just flailing around, and the water is just happening to do whatever it needs to. There's no sense of connection between action and result. And don't even get me started on the abysmal wire work that I guess is supposed to be his "airbending."

im sorry, i REALLY wanted to ignore it but 0:07 0:20 and was not very good . Everything else was good, im with it but the transitions from the ground to the air was not fluent enough. Im not gonna let this make me think the whole movie is whack, im just gonna see it in the movies and make believe those minor things didnt even happen
