I had an old 78 of this when I was about 10 which was played on a wind up gramophone (over and over). There was a sock (clean) stuffed in the the loudspeaker to muffle it (hence put a sock in it). Miss the scratchy sounds that accompanied the music. Nostalgic.
This piece would be even more impressive if we could be convinced that Ketelbey had never, ever heard Tchaikovsky's "Waltz of The Flowers". Sounds to me like Ketelbey borrowed a line or two from it.
ketèlbey was inspired and moved, one silent evening when he was somewhere in GOZO,MALTA and all of a sudden he heard the bells of Ta Pinu church ring.He was so moved that he composed here, where he was stationed as a musician.A tribute to Gozitan bells. The original manuscript of Bells Across the Meadows,as written down by Ketèlbey himself of course,is still kept in the musical archives at the Aurora Opera House Gozo. For more details you can click the website leone.org.mt/pages/teatru.asp

Albert Ketèlby (1875-1959) fué uno de los más grandes clásicos, comparable a sus predecesores. Sus obras, "In A Persian Market", "Bells Across The Meadows", o "In A Monastery Garden", son una buena prueba de ello.
This was one of my mother's favourite pieces of music and I haven't heard it since she last played it. She died when I was 17 and now I'm 56. So thank you so much for posting this.
I really love "In a Monastery Garden" it is accompanied by so many very happy memories for me. Albert Ketelbey composed such picturesque music you can't help but "see" his music as well as hear it.
Este é um estilo de composição que me emociona! E Ketelbey é extraordinário em todas as suas composições! Agradeço ao Altíssimo por ter dado a inspiração a Ketelbey!
listening to albert ketelbey is an opportunity to know one of the best composers in the world. his music lifts our souls up to ecstasy sensations, which no drugs are able
to do it, and with a big difference: music is very good to

I was interested to read the remarks by "ghadira" on this piece because I had never heard of Ketelby until introduced to his music by a lady in Malta. Kettelby is truly "the unknown composer who's music everybody knows!
Meu Deus, como comentar algo que a música deste gênio me faz sentir feliz e triste ao mesmo tempo? Onde encontrar palavras que exprimam a força gigantesca do que é sublime, do que é maior , do que é imenso , vazio e dovino?...
My Mother uses to sing this to us when we were growing up in Newfoundland. This is one of the best recordings I have ever heard. Does anyone know the orchestra playing? Also, does anyone know th lyrics? I remember some, but have forgotten most. It's a long time ago.
I'd hoped to find a version of this piece that I first heard on a 2nd-hand 12"/30cm 78 rpm disc about 1957, but likely dating from the early 1930s, including processional Kyrie Eleison with a sound swell - presumably the monks approaching into view, and a contralto solo refrain - a charming lyric, beginning: Through the wintry twilight calling...(all I can remember of those treasured words). Just perhaps, someone might rediscover this recording, because for me, it's the real mccoy. Thankyou.
Ketelbey was British. Very successful and very rich. He conducted many
recordings in the days of the 78 rpm records.
Thanks for the melodious post.

what more can one listen to. The music is simply soothing and it comes from the heart. A shade of Rachmaninov.
