  • this actually made mine feel worse, in my calf at least.. i have the sharpest pain in my lower leg, any suggestions on stretches for that? i just got sciatica for my 25th birthday :-(

  • @strawbongwae sorry to hear that, visit our site and watch the other videos about sciatica... that would be the place to start.

  • Works great! Thanks a lot for sharing!

  • GREAT VIDEO!

  • Amazing! Pain disappeared after one minute of stretching!

  • Thanks for this video! Worked great was sitting on my chair all day and through an exam with pain shooting down my leg. Tried this and bam. pain was gone in one stretch.

  • my dad tried this and it did make it feel better he is going to do more exercise thanks :)

  • continued - COMBINED with #2 - see next comment. leaning with the right shoulder against a wall (if the sciatica is left). feet about 30cm from the wall and pressing the hip towards the wall and back. Doing these 2 exercises several times a day the pain is reduced in minutes. With a full blown sciatica every 30mins 10-15x. Within 10-24 hrs, the sciatica is gone. So grateful my physiotherapist taught me these and it helps.

  • you can't get down on the floor, with sciatica, so this exercise is NOT possible. I often suffered from sciatica pain. And was bedridden for days. A physiotherapist came to my place and taught me 2 simple exercises. After 30 mins, I could get down the stairs, which wasn't possible. Instant pain relief. Exercise #1 Standing right up, feet, 30 cm apart. Slightly bent knees. Hands on back. Bend the torso backwards as far as is possible and back. COMBINED with #2 - see next comment.

  • @shanna1950 Thanks for your input. We have hundreds of people, thousands actually from our website, that have found relief doing this particular exercise with Sciatica. Everyone's condition is different, as is there flexibility.

  • what if the majority of my pain is in my lower leg and foot?

  • Helped a lot thanks

  • Great information and videos.

I have a bump or mouse on my right SI joint area (lower right side of back, an inch or two above waistline. Any suggestions for this problem? I can get my left side to release and pop but have not been able to get my right side to release.

  • How frequently should i do this and for how long?

  • @als885 it truly all depends, everyone is different. I do it in the morning and in the evening....

  • I can't do this, I get a sharp pain straight down my leg as soon as I lift my affected leg over my knee let Lone trying to pull it up for the stretch

  • Excellent, really helps. Thanks fo putting this on line. If only I had seen this years ago!!

  • even putting my right (bad) foot over my left knee, I feel intense sharp shooting pain. Should I push thru it?

  • @natevines try it sitting in a chair first...

  • I've got an artificial hip, and I'm not supposed to let the leg attached to that hip cross the midline. That's the side with the pain. Do you have any exercises / stretches I can safely do?

  • Hell I can't do those stretches, i am 8 months pregnant i can't reach. i've tried everything (ice, otc pain rubs, massage) nothing works at this point. i need relief now, having this going on for a week now and today it got to the point to were i can barely walk, it hurts so bad.

  • @TheDreamerkry Have you tried doing these stretches in a chair?

  • @kcannone Ive done what thedreammerkry has done but im not pregnant or female. My sciatica flared up one week just after starting to use an elliptical machine for an hour a day. I will soon start to weight train again to tone up my legs and body and combine both cross training with weights.. Any suggestions to speed up the healing process, or, to prevent more pain...(insert legal stuff here) ie consult a physician blah blah etc.. Any advice would help. Thanx!

  • @localtuber27 Honestly, the best advice I could give is to go to our site and watch all the other sciatica videos. They will explain it far better than I could in this conversation. Thanks

  • wow this helped alot!!!!! thanks!

  • Awesome stretch! Relieved lower back and right leg pain that I have had for over half a year in less than 5mins. THANK YOU!

  • What if I can hardly bend one of my legs when in the position? Is that actually a hamstring strain/ pull? :S

  • Omg! You have helped me so much!!

  • I've had sciatica since November..slipped a disc doing squats, the disc healed fine showed by xrays. Sciatica did not flare up until a couple weeks later while working at UPS(lifting and lowering.) So far i've had an MRI come back with nothing..Physical therapy, A deep tissue back massage( sciatic nerve was also massaged)and so far 3 visits to the chiropractor with no real results. I've been icing it as well, 3 times a day for 10-15 min. I just want this ridiculous pain to go away..acupuncture?

  • @kbuono88 I would suggest that you go watch all the videos on the sciatica page of our website. It will discuss the treatments that you can try.

    losethebackpain . com

  • @kbuono88 Try putting a tennis ball in a sock, and then putting the ball between your butt and the wall. The ball presses on the impinged nerve (hurts like heck while you're doing it) and helps release the spasm. Hold it for about 30 seconds if you can take it. You can move the ball around to different knots/spasms... it helps me tremendously.

  • OMG THIS HELPED THANK YOU!!

  • Glad I found this series of videos. The flare ups started while I was pregnant. After my work outs it got worse. It got so bad I couldn't move sometimes. I am working out again ( she is 9 months, now)

and from time to time flare up. So glad I got a reference for the exercises I need to strengthen my core and relieve my pain. Thanks.

  • im 31 and this stretch almost immediately helped :) thank you so much

  • Brilliant!

  • Thank you this really helps :)

  • Ive had the pain down along the right leg, generating from the side of my glute. It manifests when I lay down. No problem working out, but cant lay down to go to sleep. How often should I do this stertch, and will the relief be long enough for me to sleep, or will I need to do this ,say, hourly? Thanks for postin..

  • i've had sciatica pain for about 3 weeks now. is it supposed to really hurt when you pull back your leg?

  • Thanks so much for this video! Really helped me out!

  • This exercise is incredible!!!!!

Thanks doc! My back hasn't felt this good in months!!!!

  • the best treatment for sciatica is acupuncture.... i had it so bad i was hunched over for months, one treatment of acupuncture and its been gone ever since.

  • Whats the best excercise to do first with havin sciatica? The reason im askin is because i was sittin on the couch 2 nights ago and i started havin pain in my left upper buttocks. And i googled and this is what i came up with.

    Thanks.

  • @1988angeleyes this is one of the best exercises for sciatica, start slow and it will get easier

  • Love these stretches! Learned this in yoga and pilates and cannot believe how instant the relief was. Now working on imbalances, but feeling so much better! These really work folks if part of your sciatica is a tight piriformis!

  • BRILLIANT!!!!! THIS EXERCISE REALLY WORKS!!!!

ive been in a wheelchair for over 17 years did this exercise a couple of times

and hey presto !!! right am off to the bingo thanks xxx

  • Will have to show my wife this video. She has experienced sciatica pain for several years, although when pregnant it went away. Now that the baby is close to four months old it is back again.

  • @stockoptions2011 yes show her all the sciatica related videos on our site. They will not only help her understand it, she will identify what muscle imbalances may be causing her pain.

  • i have a bad case of sciatica. bad enough that i use a cane. this stretch helps me quite a bit but tends to fade once i get up to my daily routine. thanks for the tips though.

  • thanks for these stretches. When I do them my neck tightens and pops. is that normal. Am I just tight? I had a back MRI and things seem fine. I do have piriformis pain and leg pain

  • @GrissomLovesSara HI, it's tough for us to say... try keeping your back flat and neck on the ground. You won't be able to bring your leg as close but the stretch will still help.

  • @kcannone Thanks! Actually it worked itself out be keeping my chin tucked in plus I was just tight. With practice I'm loosening up!

  • I've been sufferering from sciatic pain for almost 6 months now, in my right leg. It kicks in whenever I walk or stand for a period of time, about 10 minutes, and by 20 minutes, it hurts so bad that I could almost cry. The pain is in and around my thigh and pelvic area around to my butt. My leg tightens up, and I lose energy in it and it starts going numb from my thigh down to my shinbone.

I've tried this stretch 4 or 5 times since last night, and so far, my pain has lessened a tiny bit.

  • Excellent! But do you stop with just the affected leg. Should we be repeating the exercise for the other leg too :)

  • thanks good advice i am just worried about impacting the siatic again!

  • excellent video, a yr ago i fell and sequestered a portion of my L-4 A 11mm chunck is broke off and impacting the siatic nerve! it is much much better thab=n a yr ago now just my foot is numb and u get used to it! will this exercise help me or coukld i make the chunk reimpact the nerve and end up in hell where i was last year?

  • @jerrys1231 We can't say whether or not it will help you. You could always start VERY slow and see how you feel before you do it consistently. Thanks for the feedback, best of luck to you!

  • Balvir Singh bhachu are suffering sciatica pain since2010oct.

Now I stay all the time in the bed!

  • Wow! This was Great! I had this AWFUL pain in my left buttock and down my leg for over a week. Was unable to do anything! This relieved the pain almost immediately! Thank You so Much!!

  • OMG! i did it with both legs nd the pain subsided

  • what if im too fat to reach my knee?!

  • @EdEezyBaby ya

  • That worked very well for temporary relief thanks

  • Wow! That was phenominal... I felt the pain leave as soon as I applied pressure on the leg that was affected

  • @lroseissa great so glad we can help...

  • Wow, it works, thanks a lot!

  • What if your not very flexible and can't grab your knee to pull your leg back

  • Very helpful, thank you so much.

  • Where is the 'simple sciatic stretch"? There are SO MANY videos I can't find the one you refer to in this video.

  • @r0nnyjay I'll send it to you in a message, you tube wont let us include links

  • My problem or part of the problem is a herniated disc. I think I did a twist when I picked something up. Anything should be better than surgery. The back will never be the same if something gets removed.

  • Great video! Very helpful.

  • wow! thanks!

  • And this helps with lower back pain ?

  • @BlaccBoii yes it can help with lower back pain as well as sciatica, but you probably should watch the other free videos we have on exercises for lower back pain

  • WOW, great video. I received relief after the first set of stretches thanks so much.

  • thx for post.how many times a day it shoud be done.thx again

  • @qaziasad100 it depends how tight your muscles are butusually twice a day works well...

  • Thank you so much!

I pinched my sciatic nerve yesterday while changing a tire and have basically been debilitated ever since it happened. I thought I’d try my luck looking for some relief from the pain and found this video, and I can’t believe how well it worked!

I was scared to try it at first, but I’m glad I did. My pain has dropped from a steady 8 to about a 3 or a 4.

Awesome tip! You’re a life saver!

  • @TheWholeYearInn I just did it again, and now I’d say my pain has dropped to about a 1.

  • Great explination, keep up the great work!!

  • this helps some for me, if I'm flat on my back and stay that way. problem is when I sit on the computer it puts pressure on the disc and my legs start hurting again.

I've tried all kinds of things, had this pain for almost 20 years and I'm getting tired of it.

  • Man, I'm waiting for some one to help and here I found you ...I had a lower back surgery back in 2008 .....and it is totaly failed ...it is in L5 S1...THE PAIN is horrible ...eversince I'm taking tones of pills like celebrex and lyrica...how could win this battle and gain my normal life a gain

  • What is your background or qualification/s ?

  • When i do these stretches, it hurts so much it almost feels good.

  • excellent video. Informative and this can help many people. Congrats.

  • hello, my body is not so flexible. i cannot make all these properly. i tried, it seemed to relax a little bit. do you have any more suggestions?

    thanks a lot.

  • I had one of my worst bouts with sciatica pain in both buttocks and this stretch really worked for me Thanks for passing on the info.

  • oh man this really works, but it hurts like HELL but afer doing it for like 20 minutes oh man i feel so much better

  • This seems to work very good for me seeing that mine has been getting worse over time. Now I'm getting the pain on both sides all the way to my knees and beyond. Thank you for the information and google for the search.

  • kcannone i feel alot of pain when i try to attempt those stretches you have shown me. It really hurts when i try and stretch could this be more serious or what? Get back to me if you can because i am afraid it could be tumor related

  • @65bucky Hello, obviously I can't diagnose your condition. If this stretch hurts, you can try it seated in a chair. Lift one foot and try to rest the side of your foot on top of the opposite leg, above the knee. If you havent seen someone yet and the pain get's worse you may want to go get checked out.. Hope it helps

  • Good one. Thanks.

  • I went from standing 18 to 20 hours a day (working two jobs) to only about couple a day. Im about 50 pounds overweight and currently sleeping using a airmatress (break-up with the girlfriend, she kept everything). this happened almost immediately after I left from my strenous two jobs and leaving the girlfriend. BTW the exercise did help. kinda. Thanks

  • Thank you ! This was extremely helpful. I had been doing a different stretch that was helping. I will try this stretch again in the morning ( when the sciatica is worse ) and see what the response is. If you don't mind, you mention strengthening the lower back muscles. Are there certain exercises that you recommend to help?

  • i'm afraid this stretch doesn't work for me..i'm too flexible for it already :/

  • G R A CI A SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS...........excellent!

  • @littlegiant1972 DE NAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAADDAAAAAAAAAAAA! Glad it helped:)

  • thank you!!

  • when I attempt that 1st crossover stretch I have severe pinching in my lower outside thigh. It feels like a fish hook is grabbing a long nerve.

  • this stretch worked very well to ease my sciatica pain. thanks for posting!

  • after you start doing these stretches, what exercises do you do to strengthen the weak muscles in the back area so the sciatica nerve problem doesnt return?

  • Many years ago, I severely injured my L5. The doctor said that this goo that is inside the disc, oozed out and will turn to irreparable scar tissue. The healing and rehab caused a tilt in my ilium. 4 years ago, it got cold and my sciatic nerve got angry;no amount of pain killers could ebb the pain, not even morphine. This went on for 1 month.I accidentally found a stretch for sciatica.Stand with hands on knees and GENTLY/SLIGHTLY straighten out legs, keep your head up and breathe real deep.

  • I had to completely stop running for like 3 weeks because my sciatic pain was so bad, but this totally helped and I am starting to run again finally

  • The seated variation is effective, I felt an immediate relief after trying it...

  • @Giuseppecorso Great! Glad it helped it...

  • @kcannone I thought it was something more serious but now I feel better...thank you very much...(sorry for my english)

  • @Giuseppecorso your english is perfect:) Don't forget you can do this stretch even if you don't feel the pain, in many cases it will prevent it from coming back.

  • @kcannone Yes, I've been training for powerlifting for a couple of months and back chain stretching is useful specially for us who stress back and legs muscles...

  • I have had sciatica pain for more then a month now and ir goes down the back of my leg,I will try this stretch and hope it works. Thanks

  • @timothybohn1 Hope it helps!

  • It took me a few minutes and several tears to get to the floor and once I was there, I was terrified to incur more pain, but I was able to get my back leg bent and up on my other knee. The stretch felt some relief, but I had to call my husband to help me back up. Perhaps I need to be more limber or in less pain?

  • @allthatjazzphotos there is a variation you can do while sitting in a chair. Don't be discouraged as it is a difficult position to be in when you have a lot of pain..

do a google search for Sciatica Stretch, there will be a few videos (one where Jesse is sitting in a chair) Watch that video and see if it is easier to start with.

    Hope it helps!

    Keith

  • Excellent video and suggestions! Thanks for your tips.

  • This stretch is only one of many that you will need to do to help your self achieve a balance body and to help minimize the symptoms of stenosis you can read more here about it on our site

  • Are these excercises good for Spinal Lumbar Stenosis?

  • Thank you! I found relief with 30 seconds of stretching.

  • I have had sciatica for 6 months so far... this stretch has always helped decrease the pain.. and make me feel more loose

  • What a difference! Thank you!

  • beautiful!! thank you!

  • PLease do you have to have your head flat on the ground when doing this exercise?....Thanks

  • You are a helpful sexy man!

  • I have had severe back problems now for five years. I am going to try your exercises. I will let you know If I get any relief and for how long. Thank You for posting this video.

  • @you777777777777 Awesome, you are welcome!

  • Thank you so much for this video. It has seriously been the difference between having to walk with a limp and not, and most importantly eliminated the majority the pain I had been experiencing. Are their any other methods you recommend to assist in self-treatment?

  • @Hephaestus81k glad it helped! there is a lot more info and videos on our site LoseTheBackPain . com

  • I can't afford a massage lol the closest i can get is my husband lol... but fat chance he's gonna do it for me.

  • Thank you God bless you it worked for me..

  • Great! You are very welcome...

  • For the past 2 1/2 months i suffer from sciatica. The doctors have not done nothing to cure my pain. All they are giving me is vicodin and a muscle relaxer. I'm so tierd of taking medications knowing that i'm diabetic. I hope your video will help me. =)

  • I am a massage therapist. And massages are another way to ease discomfort of sciatica. Please look into that. I really believe that will help you!

  • @isa4evr buddy i have the same problem it has been almost two months since then, but guess what??? try slow-mag from walmart's is magnesium chloride, i tyried yesterday and my pain is almost gone!!!!!!!!!!!! it does work try it...

  • Um... what do you do if your pregnant? Big belly in the way here lol and can't really do that any other things i can do?

  • there is a seated version of this stretch, I have added it to the Video reviews section that is right above this comment area, hope it helps...

  • You might try getting a massage. They have a pregnancy massage and you lie on your side and they massage everything from you lying on your side.

  • I'm so tight I can hardly cross my legs, however...this is a stretch to attempt until you get it! I thank you for this self stretch technique...now what can you do to make me get my arms behind my back and clap my hands?

  • start slow and you will get there, as for the clapping....you're on your own:)

  • Yow! I just did this stretch right after watching the video! Amazingness!!! I'm a former hockey player..need I mention TONS of hip checks over the years (?!), and I'm also an avid bowler. I have sciatica on both hips for years and I've been bowling in immense pain for the last 2 days. Your streching video was a miracle, I kid you not! Thank you, thank you bro!

  • Excellent! Thanks so much for the compliments. We are thrilled that it helped! Please spread the word about our site, if you would...

  • I just tried this stretch, the second i brought my affected leg a mm off the ground the pain got incredibly worse and my foot went instantly numb...no stretch has managed to make my pain feel any better.

  • sorry it didnt help, there is no perfect fix for everyone. I hope you find relief...

  • have you tried a chiropractor? Mine has helped my sciatica tremendously. Once that pain is eased, you should be able to start stretches.

If you go that route, look for a chiropractor that uses the Gonstead Method.

  • I already have, and will continue to tell others! Thanks again.

  • This exercise seemed to correct 4 days of bad hip sciatica for which I had to take Advil or Motrin to get through the work day. 3 hours after performing this stretching exercise I was almost pain free. What a relief! Other options I have tried are chiropractic to stabilize pelvic tilt, ice application, TENS device nerve stimuation-they all do some good but I think the streching is the best-Thanks!

  • That is wonderful. I'm so glad it helped you... Please share it with anyone else you know that is in pain.

  • Thank you so much for sharing. I have had pain in my right side since I started walking early last week in order to loose a few excess kilo's. This stretch has helped immensely.

  • You're welcome! Please pass it on to anyone you know who has pain...

  • thanks i will have to try this stretch i get a lot of pain there and also much pain on my lower back right side

  • better have flexible hips and knees for this.

  • These stretches have help me soooo much.... Thanks for taking the time to post them...... Out of all the ones I have seen, these work the best for me. Thanks Josh

  • You're welcome Josh, glad it has helped...

  • Does this work for flatback syndrome (lumbar)?

  • its tough to say, this stretch is not for everyone, start slow

  • Thanks for the video!

I find I can't really sit without pain unless I go for a 1 to 2 mile walk in the morning, does this sound like sciatica anyone?

  • Could be Piriformis Syndrome.

  • This really does work! I threw out my back badly several years ago, and had constant pain. My doctor told me to do this very stretch plus a few others, every morning, and my back has been stronger and virtually pain free since! Thanks for posting this.

  • That's great that your doctor recommended this stretch, alot of times they will just give you generic stretches that won't work for most people...

  • thanks.

  • i suffer from sciatica and i tried this stretch and as soon as i braught my leg up, an unbelievably amount of pain shot down my leg

  • I'm too distracted with my burning desire to lick his shoes to pay any attention to stretching.

  • This is the best stretching technique I have tried for sciatic pain....Thank You

  • THATS GREAT! I am so glad....

  • thank you so much for the help.

  • you're welcome! Hope it helps

  • Thanks for this. I had spinal fusion a few years ago and have been fine since, but now a sciatic nerve down my left side is bugging me. Maybe this will help.

  • You are welcome, best of luck to you....

  • you have to be free of back pain in general or better off if you have it to ever lay down much less get into this position you show. Get for real. This can only be passed off on people who would never know better back pain or not until they try all these "excercices" done by people who are not or never had been in back pain. you can't move. does that ring a bell. or is this video for people who are barely in pain yet still can do the excerice.

  • yes I have dealt with back pain as have the thousands of people that we have helped. Clearly, if you can not lay down without having pain, then this particular exercise is not for you.

  • Thanks for sharing. Been training people 21 years. Need this help myself...

  • You are very welcome!

  • This is amazing, i have had the worst sciatica in my 44 years, been taking pills, seeing docs that obviously are pressing me to have surcery with them (to help their bottom line), anyway, i tried this and BOOM, my pain went from a 7 to a 1-2, it is amazing, and did the docs tell me this exercise? - hell no, they want their bottom line! great vid. thanks!

  • I'm so glad this video helped you find relief!

  • Amen on the "Doc" thing !! They're crooked to the point they talk bad about chiropractors. Preventive medecine is best but if it all gets applied, they're out of work! Oh well. They're about health or @ least supposed to be. Pill for this, pill for that. Get under the knife! Total BS!!!

  • wow he is soooo sexxxxy
