This is hypocrisy. Progressives commit the same mistake that Conservatives do. They ignore or accept the immoral issues of their party and only advocate for the ones they deem as important. Their no better. Im starting to come to the conclusion that Religion and politics just don't mix.

I appreciate where Brian McLaren is coming from -- but I fear he sometimes conceeds way too much to post-modernism (itself and outdated concept!). Christians must do better, deeper, more informed thinking -- not simply resort to post-modern despair over truth, meaning, etc.

I think Mclaren is misusing the word atheist but I see his point. Atheism means quite literally "no God."I know what he is trying to say...that he doesnt believe in a God that orders the death of american soldiers as an act of worship. But that is not make him an atheist, it makes him a non-believer in that particular god.

God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He does not change with the fads or trends of the day. Jesus, in no way, tried to fit in with the people around Him, to please them, nor did He go out to address all the problems of the world. He preached the Kingdom of God. What is this true message of Jesus then that Maclaren preaches? Jesus' message was clear and certain. Maclarin's is not. In fact he is still searching. Jesus preached hell, Maclaren doesn't. You are just as lost as he is. Read your Bible, and stop being a Bible rejector. Has the true message of Jesus been lost for 2000 yrs, until Maclaren? Who do you think you are?

Wait wait wait...Because Mclaren doesn't focus on hell means he's a bible rejector? Jesus preached caring for the poor, McLaren does, and sadly that's a change for Western Christianity. He also preaches love, so did Jesus, which is something more people need to pay attention to because the churched is marked by its harmful statements of the morality of homosexuality than it is by its unconditional love for our neighbors. Jesus talked about homosexuality not once. Jesus barely spoke of hell.

You're right, he's not a Christian in the form WE'VE created in the last 500 years. But his teaching and example is loaded with the marks of a true follower of Christ.

He was a Christian before liberal... but regardless, the guy has only written some of the deepest theological material today. His view as talk about passing on christianity like an art. Discipling eachother... it was life changing.

If the apostles would have preached a gospel like Mr. McLaren's they never would have died a martyrs death. There is a shift going on alright!

Actually, they WERE martyred for that gospel- the WHOLE gospel, not just the personal salvation gospel. The whole gospel talks about helping out the oppressed and standing up for those who are stepped on (James calls it "pure religion") in addition to forgiveness of sins. That kind of gospel message would definitely get them killed, because it means standing up to those who are doing the oppressing, i.e. the Roman Empire. That gets you killed a lot quicker than just personal salvation messages.

I find it fascinating to listen to a post modernist use the word "certain" so many times in this public statement. The search for absolute truth or certainty in our Christian lives does not exist from a post modernist view point. Therefore it seems ironic to hear Mclaren use the word certain.

Actually, someone misled you on what postmodern Christianity is all about. From a postmodern view point, absolute truth DOES exist, it just exists outside of oneself- in other words, human reason is not the end all, be all that defines what that absolute truth is. Because it exists outside of human reason we only say it is hard to nail down completely, and because of human limitation, it's impossible to say the search for that which is beyond our capacity to completely contain is really over.

mclaren is a very educated man. anyone who reads his books or hears him speak can attest to that. this doesn't mean he knows anything at all about what he's talking about though. i've also never read another "christian" author try and tear down other christians (conservative evangelicals specifically) while claiming to be one like mclaren does.

Yes. I have read him extensively. I have read most of his books and spent many hours reading his comments on blogs. I have written two published articles about him and his movement. I have a large collection of quotations in which he denies every fundamental Christian doctrine and affirms religious pluralsim. I agree with D. A. Carson who says there is no way McLaren can be considered and Evangelical.

I dont get the point in rejecting homosexuality, when there's so much in the Hebrew Bible that we disgregard. Seems subjective, and just a cultural factor.

Read 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 and Romans 1:26-27. The Bible does claim to teach acultural absolutes. We are not bound by dietary, civil, or ceremonial laws of the OT, but moral laws that are repeated in the NT such as the prohibition against homosexuality (which God calls an abomination)are timeless.

Were you watching the same video even? He never said anything about church organization or even Elders. He did say that a single, unbalanced view point in the church as a whole is no longer the norm, so reporters should broaden who they talk to, since it doesn't reflect the church as whole. Plus, even if he were talking about Elders your scriptures refer to elders in local gatherings not leaders who have a say for the entire universal church- that kind of thinking led to the rise of the Pope
