Meyers--Augie's last name is Meyers-not Meyer....Anyway...I still put a key on Doug's grave every month for writing Key to My Heart...Kathy, The Editing Chair
It's interesting to hear how the Vox organ maintains its place in the mix whereas a B-3 (one of my personal fav instruments of all time), for example, would tend to permeate though the frequency range and fill the sound "holes". A good lesson for all you young keyboard players AND audio techs out there gigging.
God Bless Doug (R.I.P.) and I gotta say that I still get knocked on my can by the incredibly cool and gloriously cheesy Vox organ sound of the one and only Augie Meyer!!!!
Thanks for posting this. We still miss you, Doug Sahm, and IMHO, only Fats Domino, Allen Toussaint and Johnnie Johnson can top Augie Meyers when it comes to tickling the ivories.
What a kick to see Doug impersonating Jagger, on a Ray Davies song yet! But why not? The band was named to cash in on the British Invasion. And Borderwave named to cash in on new wave. Hard album to find, and I've never seen it on CD. I'm told it's one of his best.
Did Doug play out with The Texas Mavericks band name prior to mid - late 80's ? I lose track. I just think , commercially , it was a better idea , with John Perez and Augie Meyer in tow , to stage this as a (High profile )SDQ comeback , which it was , tho' they played out a bit in the 70's , and , thankfully , they kept turning up thru the 80's , with Mike Buck , Louis Ortega , Rocky Morales and others. They were all over TV at this time(In '81).
Doug Sahm was such a versatile artist. I liked a lot of the blusier stuff he did under his own name as well as his SDQ material- not to forget his part in the Texas Tornados. Click on my username link to hear a tribute version of County Line- from SDQ's Day Dreaming at Midnight album- by the Mistissini Basement Rats (vocal by yours truly).
As much as I enjoy this number, seeing and hearing the old Sir Douglas Quintet videos reminds me why rock and roll music really needs the energy of the young.
Good God Amighty, Doug was so important. So very, very important. And let me tell you, it's so cool to see my dear old Dad in sleeveless satin rockin' out. He still rocks. God bless Doug and Alvin.
Surprise surprise, other than my old band I've never heard anyone cover this old Kinks chestnut. I caught the Quintet in the Sixties--what fun. Gonna miss ya Sir Doug. And I think that's a Vox Continental not a Farfisa.
3 weeks ago I checked out Doug Sahm and there was one from the Texas Tornadoes band. Now he and Freddy Fender are R.I.P.,we need to see even more videos of this artist who performed around 43 years of blues, country and r&r.
How come, you say? 'Cos you can't get a B-3 to sound cheesy enough to imitate a Vox Continental (if you had the money to buy one) or a Farfisa (if you didn't). At the time Augie had the money, so he got a Vox and all the cheese you could want.
How ironic: First a video of Doug early in his career, being marketed as a "British Invasion" band (from Texas, of course) and then Doug near the end covering a Kinks tune.
...But , it is'nt that near the end. This was 1981 , if I'm not mistaken , about 20 years before he passed. It's kind of ironic , but , as we all know , Doug was a song man. If he liked a song , he did it.
That's right. "Who'll Be The Next In Line" was the opening cut on "Border Wave," which was released in 1981. Don't know what made me think this was so much later.
Border Wave!

All great artists, jfrankley, but you can't leave Billy Payne of Little Feat out of that mix.

Great to see them perform together, father and son. And the rest of this band is also doing a great job.
