And I'm not joking about having zero fast twitch muscle. Even if there's a predator literally about to eat them, they are only capable of doubling their speed to around .15 mph. When you consider that the average human walks without effort at 3.5 mph, you get an idea how slow they are. Plus, such a sprint usually completely exhausts the sloth and requires a long period of rest to recover from.

@Arnisho well, as you said, it moves VERY slowly (^^) making it very hard for predators to detect them :) and they are most of the times high in the trees.. plus, their metabolism is very slow too, which means that they don't have to eat a lot... and that's an advantage, but a disadvantage too (that's why they are so slow)... but don't think they can't defend themselves : look at their claws, it really scares predators :) they are AMAZINGLY adaptated to their environment =)

@sterny00 Everything about sloths is slow because they have adapted to eat and live in a certain type of tree with low-nutrient leaves. Earlier in evolution, they were ground dwellers but were driven into the available tall trees by predators and had to adapt to digest theeir leaves. This means energy sacrifices, including 4 stomachs, a 30 day digestion period, and no fast twitch muscle mass at all. The little they do have is dedicated to holding them in place rather than movement.
