If your having award time with ur guys doing absolutely nothing, try having ur miners dig out large areas for ore, your guts will haul it to a stockpile (p,s) that's you designate

Ok, Captnduck, say there is a field on one layer and a field right next to it, one layer down from the other. If you mine into the wall separating the two fields, will the top field have holes from mining or does mining not affect other layers?

This game is hard but once you understand and learn the basic such as Duck's videos the game is fun. It takes time and practice, and you will most likley fail several times.

My dwarves wont do anything but move stuff to the stockpile! I asigned the points in the planner and have two miners, but when I designate an area they dont do anything at all! Same with the woodcutters

Jeebz, I think you miners dont have a path to wherever you designated. Or your one of your dwarfs doesent have the mining labor enabled. Keep watching the vids and you see.

You might also want to look into some texture packs for Dwarf Fortress which make everything so much easier to comprehend when you are looking at it on the screen.

So confused about this, I'm completely new and have never played this before and only dled it the other day and it looks like tonnes and tonnes of programming code or something! I'm trying to make a stockpile and wondering what buttons I press and what it does, I press d then w and I select a wood stockpile.. so now what...!? I've click all over the map and nothing happens, I've hit enter erratically and nothing happens, I've dug a random square in the side... so.... now what!?

uh, just so you know, the dwarves go in order from left to right no matter what they do, like a printer kind of. Saves time actually, if you wood cutter was to go around randomly, it takes time for him to run aimlessly from tree to tree, this takes less time and is more organized.

I have a question : i made a wood storage thing and one of my dwarves is a full points wood cutter but when i say to cut a bunch of trees like you did he wont do anything Oo and the minors does dig so whats up with the wood cutter lol ?

I'm on my 10th "real" fortress and I'm still learning new ways to do things all the time.

Trust me, if you think you like it, it's worth it to learn everything, the game is absolutely amazing.

@TheKillingducks Check that you've selected the right thing. The default is usually woodcutting.

Though I notice that this is four weeks old so you've probably figured it out.

@boredman443 default option for the designation menu is based on where the center of the screen is, if its underground the default is mining, if its above ground the default is woodcutting.

Also, running speed depends on a lot of things. What version are you running? Also try messing with the graphic options in the init.txt, that can give a lot of speed.

@cyb3rphr33k you have no need to it dosent slow dvarves down or anything and if you really want to you can make a massive rock stockpile somewhere outside but it still wont be enough for a big fortress... eventually you will use it up for crap like doors statues cabinets tables etc.... and i have no idea but possibly trace it for nothing just to get rid of it... also make it into crafts and sell it to elves... just dont sell the bins... theyll propably kick your ass the next year

Hey I just downloaded this game and it looks different. The sprites for the little dwarfs are a face not a little guy with a pic, and the beds are just two ovals joined together. What gives? Did I download an older version?

@TheBiggestWolf No. You have to download tile sets to change the way the game looks. There are a lot of neat ones out there. Just google Dwarf Fortress tile sets and you will get all kinds of info on them. How to's on installing them. They are simple and give the game a little more aesthetic pleasure.

This tutorial is so unbelievably helpful you have no idea. First time I tried to play it I accidentally gave my dwarfs no professions, and didn't know how to set them to do stuff. These video tutorials make it MUCH easier to understand than the text tutorials in the game (not that they are confusing, this is just clearer).

@Leafall It is all in the process of being rewritten due to the new 40d release, hence why a lot of pages have 40d prefixed to them. Unfortunately they are going rather slow.And because I don't know much, I have to conduct my own experiments to help update, and I don't have too much free time!

You mean move the rocks on the floor? If so, you can hit 'i' to go into Zone mode. Find a spot where you want to dump all your rocks(needs to be big). Once you're done finding and zoning a suitable area, hit the button marked Garbage dump. Now just hit 'k' and mark all the rocks for dumping with 'd'.

it might be that your cpu is better suited for running it. DF runs faster on my P4 then it does on my core2, most likely because it DF dosen't support dual core so it can't make the most of it.

Uhm, the dwarf fortress is everything. It can just be a hole in the ground. If you want you can build walls. Dwarf Fortress is just the name of the game, it doesn't have to look like a fortress. Anyway just watch all the videos.
