May I ask what part of Japan shihan ikeda is from? My sensei shinzato is a student of sensei Onaga of the shinjinbukan in okinawa and shorin ryu is more of a hip based karatedo but as I have seen from mainland Japan which would be the case compared to the Okinawa area. I'm not saying the Kata is lacking but it looks more like shotokan where in the long stances which is not so much in shorin. The kata was excellant and I saw great confidence. Good job.
Jyoshinmon Shorin-ryu is the interpretation of traditional Karate-Do by Shihan Hoshu Ikeda. Thanks to his studies in Theurapedic Medicine and his extensive knowledge in Human Biomechanics is that Jyoshinmon proposes a fluid & dynamic Karate-Do.Combining the proposals of the most traditional styles,Goju predecesor of Shito-Ryu,Shorin-Ryu predecessor of Shotokan.Katas are nothing more than the interpretation of man in the martial arts, they're not the exact copy of it's origin it is man's view.

@kentelljjd it is: the basic moves are the same. Afterwards, each style and each school has a different way of interpreting those moves and putting them together. However if you break down the kata, it's the same basic structure.
felicitaciones es un estilo muy interesante me han comentado que el sihan rizo se especializa en la defensa personal... felicitaciones desde venezuela
That's because Funakoshi developed Shotokan from Shorin-Ryu and Shorei-Ryu. In fact, Shotokan's beginner kata camr from Shorin-Ryu's, and the most advanced came from Shorei-Ryu. He just changed the names from Pinan(Okinawan term) to Heian(Japanese term) so it would more accepted by the Japanese.
I knw tht. Funakoshi learnt Shuri te, which is later named as Shorin Ryu. Funakoshi changed it to Shotokan. Also, no Shorei (Naha te) kata in Shotokan. It's alomost Shuri te, My question was, why in Jyoshinmon, they follow shotokan prnciples, with the name of shorin ryu. Thnks and Rgds
True, I was just noting the similarities between the kata in each style because of their relation to each other. And about Shorei kata being in Shotokan, that depends on who you ask. Funakoshi claimed so in his book Ryukyu Karate Kenpo, but many karate masters then and now disagree with him.
Hullo aiko,I"ve done both shotokan and Jyoshinmon so perhaps I can help. You"re right the 2 sets of katas are very similar,I think this is deliberate because jyoshinmon is based in Japan, not Okinawa. Above the Peian kata the style is more similar to other shorin styles, Wanshu,Annanku,Chinto,Seisan etc. No-one has posted them yet! Cheers Rob.
Thnks bigrobnz. But, this kata is Heian, not Pinan.. I mean this is derived from Shotokan Heian, not Pinan kata of Shorin. I ve trained under Shorin Masters, Nakazato, Miyahira, Higa Sensei, and hv seen other Shorin, Matsubayashi, Shorinji, kata. This is Heian and not similar to Shorin kata. I dnt knw why and hw Ikeda Sensei named his style Shorin Ryu.
Its a pleasure for me since i am a jyoshinmon practicer be able to observe how you guys argue if the katas are from jyoshinmon shorin ryu or shotokan, demostrates that the real roots come from okinawa and the men with his diffrent ways of interperting things talks or defines over a form or style when the rael essence in the kata is in the deepness of the bunkai like the phylosophic expressision of the karates ansestors.Response from Sensei Jesus Costa.Mimai,Florida
Karate is not just technique. It is something comes with history, essense and culture. Therefore, the origin of a form is important. If this is Jyoshinmon katas, I dnt knw why it named as Shorin Ryu. Thank u
Chotoku Kyan from Shorin-Ryu is the style folowed by Hoshu Ikeda to create the style of jyoshinmon giving orgin to a new form of expressing the Shorite
Chitiku Kyan forms are practiced in Okinawa by Zenpo Sensei, Jyoen Sensei, matsubayashi
, etc.. Tht's the correct Shuri-te forms. Ikeda sensei claiming he's following Kyan kata, but he's following shotokan kata, not Shorin Ryu.. That s thr truth

@aiko4321 No, it's not. It seems to be some strange combo of both. Not really compatible with any, though.
