I was born and raised in Hawai'i, and it's great to see how Waikiki and downtown Honolulu looked back then. With the over-development O'ahu has experienced since statehood, the island has lost its soul, and it's a shame. I wish my home still looked like this. Thank you very much for sharing this video of "The Greatest Generation".

@JamesTKirkCobain Wasn't president FDR a liberal? Of course he was! We won the war because we were all Americans!!! Unfortunatly, FDR didn't see the ending of the war. These days, our society has gotten too soft, both left and right. Parents won't let their kids play with toy guns anymore and Tom and Jerry cartooms are too violent. The right wingers bashes the left, and the left frowns on the right. Each winger think their right, just like each religious group their right in the middle east.

What a wonderful video -- those days seemed so special. I was born in the 50's, but am a WWII history fanatic and seem to belong in the 40s. I miss the music, the more simple America and the way Hawaii was. What changes have taken place there! I lived on Maui from the early 70s until 2000 and much prefer the old Hawaii. American Patrol is nice, but the Jimmy Durante soundtrack brought more life to this video. Did You Tube make you remove it? Just curious. THANKS for posting such a special video.

Very nice home movies. My first visit to Waikiki was as a young boy in late 1956 and in my memory Kalakua Avenue doesn't seem to have changed too much from your film (except for the cars - there were weird Chrysler corp cars called Kingston Specials (1/2 Plymouth 1/2 Dodge). Really nice film. Thanks for jogging my memory with your dad's images. I hadn't thought about that vacation for many years. Thank you so much for posting.
