So...here's the history on this entire deal.

By the lore of the movies, the Wu-Tang were a group of warriors that defected from Shaolin. The Wu-Tang sword-style was a derivative offshoot of the Shaolin techniques.

Raekwon defected from Wu-Tang after defecting from Shaolin to go back to Wu-Tang.

Result: Best Return To Form EVER.

And here's the history behind the movies. Wu Tang/Wudang was a mountain with 72 peaks centered around and leaning towards 1 central peak seen to represent all of existence leaning towards the one principle of the Tao. It is a Taoist holy land and every peak had it's temples with many Taoist sects represented. The main god of Wudang is Zhen Wu (True Martial Lord) Worshiped since neolithic times as Xuan Wu (Dark/Mysterious Martial Lord).

In the form of a tortoise and snake in perpetual combat, and associated with water, north, and warfare. Wudang became known for it's Jian Fa (Straight Sword skills) much as Shaolin was known for it's Gun Fa (Staff skills) it was also known as the home of the NeiJia Quan(Internal boxing) system of the Taoist priest Zhang San-Feng. He supposedly studied Shaolin boxing before incorporating the Taoist idea of softness overcoming hardness, and stillness overcoming motion, to create a new style.

There was never any historic rivalry between Shaolin and Wudang. That comes from popular novels from the 19th-20th century.

By the Yuan dynasty they had evolved into the Wuxia novel which is still popular in China today.

You should also check out Jin Yong (Louise Cha) he is considered the father of the new style of Wuxia novels and it's possible to find translations of his work. If I can give you some advice it's that the most popular Wuxia novels/films have always blended fact and fiction, often using historical people, places, and events.
