  • @wondrbear Its just a suggestion is not an obligation, but I recommend to listen him (Leo Jimenez) he is awesome, If you wanna listen his music you can search in youtube "Saratoga", "Stravaganzza" or "Leo/037" These are the name of some of their bands, He is a Spanish singer, but his voice is amazing, I swear you, you will not regret, this is his presentation of Leo Jimenez in the play Jesucristo Superstar, is just a segment of the song Gethsemane :D Enjoy it /e/xc0RxpB4ycg

  • I Suggest that listen to Leo Jimenez's presentation, He's better than neeley xD

  • This moves my heart!

  • Keeps a very good shape!

  • Tom Neeley Superstar

  • This particular tour came to Winnipeg (Manitoba, Canada) about 14 years ago. I was over the moon when I heard the news, because at that point in time nothing came to Winnipeg except snow. Then I found out how much the tickets were. Needless to say this is as close as I'm ever going to get to seeing JCS live. Even thinking about it now depresses the hell out of me. I cannot express my love for Ted and Carl and well, the whole (movie) cast.

  • i love the part where he doesn't even have the mic that close to his face but you can still hear how powerful and in tune his voice is!

  • words just can't describe, he is awsome, a classic of our time,,,

  • This is a concert performance and Mr. Neely NAILS it. Bravo! A-maz-ing!

  • This guy is one of the most beautiful human beings in every possible sense. A true gentleman, a master actor and a wonderful singer. I really adore this guy. I actually think that is Jesus, or something similar to what people 2000 years ago invented as Jesus.

  • I love him...

  • Atyaúristen! Szenzációs!!!

  • Sweet Ted..many years I've seen you play this role over and over in my mind on my DVD and I never tired of it.....You age with grace and love dear man. this role is and was your destiny. GOD BLESS YOU!!!

  • when I hear Adagio for strings it always reminds me of this song....

is there any relation from when the author wrote this peice anybody know?

  • @dougfresh68

No. The music for this song was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Adagio for Strings was written by Samuel Barber.

  • @WJvanEden

thanks ,Y a I know they're 2 different authors I guess I was wondering about influence more than relation

  • @dougfresh68 Actually, yes... Lloyd Webber is KNOWN for stealing bits of pieces and putting them together for his own use. While I still love some of the things he's done, he truly does plagiarize. :(

  • OMFG! I did not know this existed... is he still performing this music?

Holy Shit! He still gots the most exciting set of pipes ever!!!!!!

  • OMFG! I did not know this existed... is he still performing this music?

  • fuck yeah that is a mighty scream!

  • Steve Balsamo might be Jezus, But Ted Neeley is God

  • surely an amazing rock opera, depicting sum of the the greatest story ever told...i dig it, and its hippie like feel .. ted is awesome. this blows my minds eye..... must ve been cool 2 b there in the flesh.. thanx 4 this....peace n love......

  • it gives me chills EVERY TIME.

  • I've watched alot of films depicting the life of Christ, and eve though this wasn't even particularly aimed at believers (it appeals to the secular... being in spandex and all XD) but Ted Neeley seems to play the part with the most CONVICTION. He really feels it and didn't hide any emotion (even anger) from the camera in the movie. He didn't hold back, not one bit. After all, Jesus wasn't all 'meek and mild', you know ^^:

  • Even in the movie,he owns it!!!

  • Ted Neeley..

no one like Him!!! ...NO ONE!!!

  • steve balsamo is so much better than him

  • Your opinion, but that's like comparing a Rolls Royce to a Hyundai. No one has ever touched the level of emotion and artistry that Ted Neeley brings to this role. He IS "Jesus Christ Superstar." Period.

  • @AwesummProductions, are you talking about Steve Balsamon versus Ted Neeley now or Steve Balsamo versus Ted Neeley in 1973? In the first match-up (Ted Neeley now), I'd say your opinion is very debatable. In the second (Ted Neeley 1973), not a chance in hell, buddy. There's no contest.

  • i love it!!!!!

  • i cant believe he is still doing this after all this time

  • He is amazing.

  • Leesawford---if u say the people in this clip are loud, take a look at ure self ure not exactly quiet....I know for a fact that if u see a show with a great enough performance u do shout out loud!! And thats only a good thing. If u are om stage performing there is no greater reliefe then an immediate response of appreciation like that!!!

    Love to all :)

  • Holy freaking Hell...that was amazing!

  • wonderful voice!

  • este hmbre me enloquecio cuando yo tenia 17 años me hizo perder la cabeza de AMORRRRRRRRRRRRRR

  • Ian Gillan is still the best, for those of you who haven 't senn it watch the original!

  • @fartonme7 Im guessing your a fan of his band. I wonder if you hadn't known he came from them if you'd hold this same opinion.

  • hermosa voz una de las mas lindas que existe emociona oirlo

  • Que voz ! increible!

  • Bellissimo!!

  • Oh my God! I have always loved Ted Neeley singing Gethsemane, but honestly I find this to be the best on YT. I haven't listened to many Gethsemane's but of all I heard they were awful, Ted's is the only one I like but that is probably just me, haha. Thanks for posting.

  • Geez, what's with all lhese World War IIIs? I may as well return to Tila Tequila's blog LOL

  • @emma473

You're entitled to your own opinion of course but if you are gonna be rude to everyone who disagrees with you, I'll just start removing your comments altogether.

  • camilo sesto is better

  • @sergimallorquin Hahah. Camilo Sesto is a piece of shit.

  • ? pssss....camilo sesto good boice....ted no...

SPAIN IS BETTER! USA SHIT JAJAJAJA

  • @sergimallorquin No. Camilo Sesto has a whiny little girl's falsetto. It's like listening to someone cut up a screaming little girl.

  • Some might think that of Ted Neeley, though I think his voice rocks!

  • The thing is, it sounds like complete fucking shit on youtube. But I saw him live last week, it was outstanding once you hear it live.

  • Everyone is entitled to his own opinion of course but if you find this performance 'embarrassing', I'm sure you haven't seen many other people performing this song.

  • Comment removed

  • after totally loving this musical since i was a kid, i finally got to see it on stage 2 years ago & ted was in the lead role here in toronto. dream come true - it was a brilliant show. thank-you for bringing to the stage the music i have loved on film and cd (album) for 35 years.

  • ik heb een handtekening van hem!!!! hij is de beste

  • fucking moronic idiotic fools screaming and wooping during his singing..screaming over someones art is no way to show appreciation to a great singer like Ted!...fools.

  • Maybe so but thanks to those people we've got these wonderful recordings which we would otherwise never have seen.

  • @leesawford It's a rock show....

  • @leesawford Why waste your breath moaning at the crowd?

Nothing can be done to stop the shouting

If ev'ry tongue was still the noise would still continue

The rocks and stones themselves would start to sing:

  • ted and carl are the best ever period!!!

  • oh my ted!!! you are on point still !i had the pleasure of seeing ted and carl live in denver i love their versions most!

  • I cry everytime I see and here this. I have a ticket for Feb.21st in Pa. and going to see him perform this....I think I better take tissues...

  • he is really jesus ....singing the songs

  • Not bad, but i personally prefer Drew Sarich over any Jesus

  • No one can be like him in the role of Jesus! He is legend!

  • @miglio17 are you kidding? Watch Steve Balsamo...HE IS THE MOST PASSIONATE JESUS EVER! (Aside from the real one;) youtube him and you shall see...makes this performance pretty lame.

  • @emma473 lol did u see the role Ted originated in 1973 cause that's a pretty bold statement

  • @emma473 No. Balsamo is a pathetic pretty boy show boat who doesn't understand the song.

  • @DrFlaxWebFLOO Balsamo 'doesn't understand the song?!'

you're the one who's obtuse and don't know passion when you hear it...Balsamo 'speaks to God' full of anguish and rancor...sorry, but can't say the same for this performance...it's like neeley is 'talking to himself'....btw, i'm a theology major, so don't bother me with nonsense

  • @emma473 Obtuse? Ooo. Whippin' out the "big words" are we? No. Balsamo is clearly an ACTOR portraying the role. He has a weak, whiny falsetto. Neeley lives the goddamned role. Steps Into the shoes of the character. He's a real method actor.

Oh. And I don't give a shit whether you are a theology major or not. It's irrelevant to the conversation. You're impressing no one.

  • @DrFlaxWebFLOO Great...Neely is Jesus...he 'lives' the role...really? is he wearing sandals on a daily basis, living with no material possessions and performing miracles...wow, that's impressing for somone who is an ACTOR...btw, did you have to look 'obtuse' up in the dictionary? you can answer back, but I will not answer....I only give ditwits two responses...that's my limit to dealing with weak minds...oh, and Neeley's 'screaming' around 4:17 is absolutely annoying!

  • @emma473 Haha. Weak minds? You believe in God. How's that for a weak mind!

  • @drflaxwebfloo friend, i think emma473 is as much of a jackass as the rest and i love neeley, but plese to dont generalize christians. it's rather demeaning to be lumped in with someone so tense, hateful, and frankly irritating as emma473. oh and im an actor, i agree she looked like an idiot mistaking your use of the phrase "living the role". see not all of of god loving bastards are so dense.

  • @gbbrocks My apologies. I had just stooped to jackass levels. I know there are a lot of really great christian people. And I have no way of proving that there isn't a God.

  • @emma473 And no, Obtuse is not a difficult word to master. Despite the fact that I go on Youtube every once in awhile to consort with literate fools and internet-diploma scholars like you, does not mean that I am lacking in the brain department.

I didn't mean he "lives the role" in a literal sense. But I shouldn't be surprised. A Christian taking words literally? Who'd a thunk it!

  • @DrFlaxWebFLOO And, irony here, what I meant was illiterate. :-P Gah. Score one.

  • @DrFlaxWebFLOO actually the annoying part is 3:17- 4:00

    earplugs needed!

  • @DrFlaxWebFLOO actually the annoying part is 3:17- 4:00

earplugs needed! oh, and you're the one 'impressing' everyone...you're a Doctor!

  • @emma473 And unfortunately, there's no cure for your idiocy. I'm sorry.

  • @emma473 Have we overstepped ourselves?? Just a TAD too sure of ourselves, aren'e we? So you are a theology major, and that makes you an expert? There is humility to consider, if you are a theologoy expert, you know? We are all entitled by rights of uniqueness, to have an opinion....

  • @Saphirechevy OVERSTEPPED?? UH? What the F*ck are you talking about? Yes, we ARE entitled to our opinions and that is just what I have stated--my OPINIONS...use your God-given brain and go read the dictionary, so next time you can actually try to be a 'smart-ass' and spell your 'big word' correctly! Now, go read and leave me alone.

  • @emma473 Oh, and talking to oneself is called a "soliliquay".

  • @Saphirechevy it's a 'SOLILOQUY' you dipshit! Learn to spell, then you may try to comment on my opinions...even then, your opinions don't mean anything to me...

  • i think this man might actually be Jesus

  • wow that's the best I've heard him! Amazing!

  • GOOSe BUMPS

  • I love this. The vid/sound quality is not good.. but Ted is great. I think he was about 53 in '98. It good to see the old boy still leading the way on this role and the way it should be delivered.

  • wow still got the pipes!! love him, the best always =)

  • incredible, incredible, incredible, incredible, incredible, incredible, incredible, incredible, incredible....

i will never forget this vid

    Thx for sharing

  • Simplemente hermosa interpretación....Ted será siempre Jesus Christ Superstar...

  • WONDERFUL performance!!!!! So much EMOTION, PASSION!!!!!! He definitly did Jesus justice.

  • I was in the chorus onstage for this performance. Thank you whomever posted this. It was an absolute rush to work with Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson. Such an honor. They are both amazing powerful people. Ted Neeley feels like Jesus, very kind, respectful of his fans and a very calm loving demeanor. I believe this series of concerts were the last shows they ever performed as these characters. They did it as a benefit to start the Rubicon Theater in Ventura.

  • Comment removed

  • this was the actual performance???? why is he using a mike instead of those musical mikes on your head? oh man. was it kinda low budget. I love them both.

  • it says they were live concerts after the tour

  • Um...I think I've seen clips of Neeley performing in 2006?

  • You're correct. He has been on a tour again from 2006-2009. His scream isn't as good as in this performance anymore (what would u excpect from a 65 year old...), but still very impressive.

  • So? Are you going to let your fanatism blind you? Ted Neeley doesn't even look like Jesus anymore/

  • To be honest, no one really knows how Jesus looks LOL!!!!

  • Except people that were alive in his time.

  • awesome thanks for the post

  • epic! I'd love to see this in better quality, but it's great to be mesmerised by this performance regardless of audio quality!

  • la rajaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Stunning indeed. He doesn't sing this song, he lives it.

  • Absolutely STUNNED!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • vocal entern ... the best I've ever heard

  • Ted owns this role. Enough said.

  • Comment removed

  • wow! thats amazing even though hes old still he can do his high notes that I think no one could do you know... Hes gifted galing the best I love you Ted neeley

  • you should see the "1973 film version" of jesus christ superstar...

  • great!!

  • gorgeous! despite being that old (i believe he s past 60) his voice still sound very solid and rough, in the best traditions of rock scene.

Ted's variant of play/singing this song is the best. Still however, in my opinion Ian Gillan had bigger voice and scenic potential to make this song epic, but he never made it. Dunno why. Maybe he didnt fully understood the role of Jesus. Ted overcame him.

  • Is it just me or does it seem to anybody else like he's not even straining to hit those stratospheric notes? Even if it is falsetto (which I don't think it is, but that's just me) the average John/Jane Q. Public would be popping more than a few veins ion their necks to get that high.

  • 4:10 he sing without microphone °____°

  • I get the feeling he was loud enough to be heard without...

  • Great singer !!! He has such a voice, He is one of my fave singers. God bless you, Ted Neely !!!

  • i saw this a year ago and got goosebumps during the "alright!". ted has set the bar for this role to a height i don't feel anyone can ever reach.

  • woops, I am at fault for keeping that topic alive on here, sorry guys =s

  • one kiss from chile. thank you for jesus chrit superstar.

  • Wow... I'm speachless. Nobody is like him in this song.

  • why is it no matter which Ted Neeley Gethsemane video I watch there are people talking about Adam Lambert? what the hell does he have to do with this? any moron knows that American Idol should never be put in the same category with the perfection that is Jesus Christ Superstar, or anywhere close to it. give it a rest and get back to your tv set before you miss your next reality show.

  • If you've ever seen Ted perform Live, then you'd understand the TRUE emotion and feeling in this song. His interpretation of the song is HIS own. After seeing him do this live I haven't seen a single performance on TV or youtube that compares.

  • How the heck old is he in this!?!?! i can't believe how awesome this is.

  • well...this performance was in 1998...he was 55. Now he's 65 and the situation is unfortunately (but naturally) a little bit different. But he's the best. I love his performance in the movie...and that one is immortal.

  • Wow..how does he hit that super high G in full voice..And he can still do that after 65 years. wow.. Amazing

  • Although it's not full voice but mixed voice, he is still the best Jesus period. One of my best singers. Even power metal singers cannot reach that G in full voice.

  • Yeah i think its impossible to hit G5 in anything other than mix, head voice or falsetto

  • Rob Halford does it

  • Ehh head voice.

  • Check out John Farnham singing this. A great version with a top F taken in full voice.

  • Isnt it supposed to be a G?

  • It is. I don't like Farnham, he sounds airy when reaching the upper parts.

  • at this mans age most of the greats cant hold a note. legend

  • I think I've listened to Gethsemane so many times that I could not count out anymore, but EVERY time I listen to Ted is a shocking experience. He's not a mere man, he must have something divine in his voice. No one, never, was able to sing like him. He is a living legend.

  • WHAT A VOICE, GEE!!

  • I have admired and respected Ted Neeley as THE best voice I have ever heard from a man ever since the 1970's, when I first watched JCSS. Not until THIS year have I heard a voice that I believe compares.

I know that Adam Lambert is the only living man (besides Neeley) that could do this song and these tracks justice.Check him out here on youtube, "Crawl Thru the Fire" and "Is Anybody Listening" as well as a few of his AI tracks, ok?(like "Satisfaction" and "Mad World") Ted and Adam rule!!

  • I had a feeling someone would talk about Adam...I agree! I would just LOVE to hear his take on this. gosh if he pulled a shocker for rock week...i mean this is PERFECT for him. It would be a combination of his haunting ballad voice and his haunting high notes. I am DYING for him to sing this! In fact, JCSS is on his fave music and movie list =D

  • Thanks Janeym! Yes, Adam Lambert is the ONLY contestant that could even get NEAR this song...but since it will be rock week (and not Broadway) I doubt we'll hear Adam choose this. Now, IF they have a Broadway week, THIS would be the ultimate choice for Adam!! I LOVE Neeley and I believe Adam singing this would be a tribute to him and also would cause renewed interest in JCSS AND in the one and only Neeley! GO ADAM!! xD

  • I don't think Lambert could do the song justice. His voice is too popish.

  • DrFlaxWebFLOO? I respectfully (and vehemently!) disagree with your rather blase' assessment of Adam Lambert's vocal skills. If you'll watch (here on youtube) Adam in "Crawl thru the Fire" and "Is Anybody Listening", as well as "Jericho", among others, you'll hear and see more of his range and performance abilities. Adam has been in many stage productions and has the chops to sing Gethsemene or any song he chooses.Ted Neeley is 1 in a million, but so is Adam Lambert. (so that's 2 in 2 million,XD

  • I respect your opinion, but I disagree. Gethsemane needs a singer with more than just an impressive vocal range. I've watched Lambert's performances, and his acting looks like...acting. He's not putting himself into the roles he potrays. Further more, JCS is a rock opera. It should have rough, gritty voices. Lambert sounds way too trained and popish. My opinion anyway.

  • I agree with you DrFlaxWebFLOO.

Adam was a robot. He had range, but no soul. The best he can do is act, but he can't put the emotion into songs that are needed to really be a great musician. He's a good singer. Good. But without connecting with the songs he sings, he'll never be great, and that is why he lost on American Idol. He'll always be a musical theater actor with an exceptional range.

Although personally, I hate his voice, regardless of how high he can sing.

  • I agree with you. In Mad World, which he sung amazingly, is not emotionally powered. He acts it very well, but he sounds like he doesn't relate to it himself at all. People like Gary Jules have a voice that portrays their understanding and full comprehension of the mood. Not acting, but feeling.

  • wait a minute, I'm not scrolling down, but why do I feel like you're talking about Adam Lambert? Did I guess right? LOL

I love him and all but how about some respect for TED NEELEY?

  • I was talking about how Adam is a good actor, but lacks true emotion. TED NEELEY is amazing and my fave Jesus and one of my favorite performers : )

  • I agree. This song is very dependent on the tone of the voice. I don't think anyone could ever sing it the way Ted sings it.

  • u're right .

  • I can't find music with him on Itunes!!!!!

  • I have not seen a better performer for Gethsemane. Ted, you have a place in the history of musicals. I admire your God-gifted talent. My son, Georgie Dave, is only 10 years old and loves to sing the original movie version of Gethsemane that you did. He does a great job following your style.

  • Jesus Christ, this man is great

  • This man has to be one of the best. He takes up beyond human in his vocal ability.

  • TED NEELY a legend he will be rememberd when we are all dead and i dont plan on dying till im at least 127 give or take a year or two

  • for CHRIST SAKE ;p

Ted Neeley is the ultimate man!! other than the fact that it would be a little funny for him to play the role still, because i don't think Jesus got be that old, he's the only one who can truly pull it off

  • Ian Gillan ruined his voice when he was still young. Ted Neeley's just got a little grittier, but is still able to do it in his mid-70s

  • he turned 65 in 2008. he may be a bit past his prime now, but he can still knock out most of those high notes like no one else his age could!

  • or any age

  • Neeley has been singing this song before some us were ever born...u guys dont hav the right to call him weak...id like to see u sing even a line of this song wen u'r as old as he is here...

  • or ever most ppl couldnt hope to hit this at any age

  • Neeley is God

  • Mr. Neely is the only one

  • Mr. Neely is the only one

  • Weak maybe a bit harsh - but generally speaking I prefer Gillan.

  • too weak!!! you kidding?! Ian was really good but seriously Ted portrays the emotion and the agony of the scene way better than ian ever could.

  • A 30 anni la voce e' immutata,fa impressione vedere Gesù"invecchiato".Se fosse un segno....qualcuno ha sentito che fine ha fatto la voce di gillan??

  • Against other opinions:

I prefer Ian Gillan's version on the alternative JCS album!

  • I thought Ian was the original singer?

  • He was....he did not make it into the movie because he demanded that all of Purple be a part and get paid what they would touring. He put his band first. I don't think anyone could muster up the raw power that Ian could. That being said I still like this guy, but prefer the soundtrack too with Ian too.

  • Yeah I know.

  • Gillan can't hit the high notes anymore. Neeley can.
