Checked this out years ago--then had to come back to learn that cool "D" lick. Was helpful then as it is now. Great to see so many people learning from you!
just discovered ur videos the other day this ones already helping my finger speed increase greatly, do you have any beginner banjo lessons on here? I'm mainly a guitar player but I've been interested in picking up the banjo and the mandolin as well
Great stuff. I'm a blues rock metal player but I've always wanted to pick a little bluegrass. The transitions from the blues scales to the hammer on and open string notes you play are totally different but man I'm hooked. Gonna trade in a Jackson dink for a nice acoustic!!
Somebody ought to break your fingers! don't worry that's just a compliment we use from where I come from. It means you are the best I've ever heard. I've watched a lot of your videos, your a killer banjo player too!

Hey man, knew to playing this kinda style, n recently broke my hand so getting back into playing. Cool little licks, been messin around with the first one for a day or so n nearly have it perfect :) thanks!

That's the problem with life, everyone's a critic - those who don't know how to, love to tell everyone how to. :) Anyway, you're a great player and teacher and a very personable individual. Great, great stuff to practice with. Thanks for your time and goodwill. BTW I bought a Paige capo and it won't fit over the neck veloute on my D-28, so I can't slide it up above the neck the way you do. However, since I have a D-28 I shouldn't complain. Happy picking!!
Banjo Ben, You're the greatest. How you've mastered all of these instruments, while still a young man, is a mystery to me, but you have a boatload of talent and the world ahead of you. I'll visit your Facebook page - but only because you asked us to. I don't care for the "social network" aspect of the Internet. In your case, I'll make an exception. All the Best.

I've been a rocker and blues player since age 10. I love bluegrass but have never taken the time to sit down and get it grooved into my head. Your videos have been great teaching aids!!!

Hey Banjo ben, Thanks for all your lessons. I am new to blue grass and have a question you can help me out on. If I'm playing in the key of G don't I cross over on some notes that shouldn't be included in the lick. I am a novice (so don't laugh to hard at my question) to music theroy and I'm working on my leads.
Hey bud...the only stupid question is the one you don't ask :) However, what do you mean exactly? I think you may mean that there are some notes in these licks that aren't in the G major scale? If that's the case, it's okay. In bluegrass, we often use notes in the licks that don't fall in the major scale...that's what gives it that "blues" feeling. If that's not what you meant in your question, ask another or shoot me a message. Thanks for watching!
Yep! And the more you add, the more "nasty" it'll get...and that's where it's up to your taste. It wouldn't sound good to throw in all these flat tones in a "major" sounding fiddle tune perhaps, but they have their place. Happy pickin' and Merry Christmas!
Hey, Banjo Ben. You are a trip! Thank you very much for these lessons. I`ve hacked away at Teles in top 40 country cover bands for nearly 10 years and you`ve opened up a whole new avenue for me (and many other, I suspect) to enjoy. My Gibson acoustic has never got so much attention. If you need some counter-balance to your excellent videos, I will be glad to post a vid showing the wrong way to play bluegrass. Sincerely, thanks!
Every one is right you are the man. I play mandolin and I am just starting to play lead guitar, and you have helped me more than you know. Could you do some A and E licks ect...? Thanks again
I really appreciate your work. This video is perfect, not too hard, not too easy. I have plenty of guitar experience so I can follow your licks, but I've never mastered bluegrass flatpicking. I have lately been jazzed about learning Bluegrass. Your instruction is a big help.
Hello Ben. I just subscribed and want to thank you very much for helping us. Are any tabs available from your various posts? If so, how might I access?
Incidentally, if you play d lick with your middle, ring, pinky, instead of index, middle ring... you can really strengthen your pinky. I mean, if you are like me... and need the strengthening.
Omgosh. You're so happy. It made me laugh. lol

Thanks for watching!

you hit it right on the head....thanks so much for your response. So I will assume it is okay to add these extra notes when improving a lead.

Yep! And the more you add, the more "nasty" it'll get...and that's where it's up to your taste. It wouldn't sound good to throw in all these flat tones in a "major" sounding fiddle tune perhaps, but they have their place. Happy pickin' and Merry Christmas!

Thanks for all of your help and Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!

Hey Banjo Ben,
I really appreciate your work. This video is perfect, not too hard, not too easy. I have plenty of guitar experience so I can follow your licks, but I've never mastered bluegrass flatpicking. I have lately been jazzed about learning Bluegrass. Your instruction is a big help.

Brilliant. I have played blues and just started bluegrass recently, this has blown the floodgates open for me!
By the way, was that a 30 Rock impersonation at the beginning? Hilarious!

Dude, you are the bomb. Thanks so much.
Incidentally, if you play d lick with your middle, ring, pinky, instead of index, middle ring... you can really strengthen your pinky. I mean, if you are like me... and need the strengthening.
Keep'm coming Ben... you are awesome!
