  • I would shit my drawers , if somebody picked up an Electric Bass and did not slap or pop! fingerstyle the forgotten art form??

  • So Good!

  • hey My dad played the bass on the recording of this song, no kidding. Nice job !!

  • great

  • Tone very close..

  • Man that's great, excellent and clean sound, well done :D

  • Great sound especially you slap bass. Great work!

  • you're playing the bass too fast, it's good, but just slow the tempo. Phenomenal job man

  • Good stuff bro bro

  • Bad Ass!

  • remarkable!!!

  • it's unbelievable how confortable you are playing it and you're spot on timing and everything. simply the best one on youtube. i also uploaded a 30 sec video where i play the main riff on my musicman stingray, i wish i could be just as good as you.

  • what amp are you playing out of?? sounds great

  • effortless..thats nice

  • 5 stars

  • sounds like gran turismo 2 when the bass isnt playing xD

  • hey man great video and playing ...heaps good..i was just wondering where u got the song without the bass line...could u link me it plz :D

  • 3:07 insane saund !

  • Hi ! great sound and playing, 5 stars !

What's the settings with the symetrix please ?

  • @linchoun I don't remember. Quite high ratio and slow attack.

  • Awesome!

  • yeah dude very smooth, you aint strugglin like 90% of the other youtubers

    Sweet action

  • can you come play in my band, please? no one can play anymore...

  • Hey great quality.. How did u do the recording? Im a bit of an amateur with equipment and I just wanna know how you got the video in sync with the song, . I can see that ur using headphones, so Im guessing u mixed it together or something?? Just want some help :P

  • Please see the channel notes, a quick decription.

  • Flawless, same as all your other videos.

  • my favorite song of all time.. this guy is soo on beat! i <3 guitar players!

  • wow!!! Great.... i like it, very goood

  • Before I ever considerd playing bass ....this tune foreshadowed my intrest because the bass playing in this tune is so upfront and catchy !! I was hooked on hearing out bass parts in tunes after it. Glad you coverd this because I realised that.

  • y a pas photo, c'est la meilleure version de forgets me mots à la basse , total respect man,

  • awesome sound

  • Utterly flawless.

  • Whoops, never mind, on the compressor. I neglected to click on the info tab, until after the video. Symetrix 501, got it. Thanks any way...

  • Amazing! Are you using standard tuning, with .45-.105 guage flat wound strings? What kind of compression pedal are you using? I'm looking to upgrade, from my old one.

  • Great quality, great bass, great playalong!

  • Your bass sounds just like the original!

  • omg!! My favorite song and a bass guitar.. LOVEEE IT!!

  • too much effect in my personality..could be a bit dryer, but nevertheless great video!

  • It is guys like you who keep me going for lessons. You rock, funky dude!

  • best version I can find on youtube so far - kudos! great compressed sound.

  • top drawer bass playing buddy!

the best play along to this song i've seen on here.

how's about doing a vid of chic's "everybody dance"?

  • hey man you are playing perfect!...cheers!

  • He doesn't one thing that Freddie does, instead of strumming up and down, Freddie just slaps it.

  • In fact I don't strum, I slap with the thumb as well as with the ring finger knuckle. On the original, I believe, Freddie is hammering on rather than slapping all notes in the 16ths passages.

  • @bassowman I saw a video where he actually does slap all the 16ths... Dunno, maybe he just does whatever he feels like it at the time. Nice cover by the way!

  • Bass player's delight! Grate job mate!!!

  • P basses rule! Nice to hear the original bass line played accurately.

  • This is THE... slap sound...wish everyone would forget about the Mark King, M Miller thing. this is the greatest slap sound that a bass guitar can make, nice playing too....Freddie would be impressed...

  • good bass sound,,

  • wooooaahhh to compressed maybe? what have you got the ratio on? good playing tho mate

  • what is the effect?

  • freakin awesome!

  • Not only did you get the bass line down, you got the Fender sound also. WELL DONE! :-)

  • Great!

I want this Funkmachine bass, so beautiful!

  • Splendid work.

  • This is an example of what bass playing should be about solid, fat tone and loads of grove. This chap has inspired me to sell my warwick and buy a precision bass.

  • Maybe too much compression? Love it though

  • Simple but effective

  • well done! Nice bass tone and in the pocket :)

Best w-cam version I've seen so far!

  • And then you realise a PB is as good as a JB for slap! With that big bass sound, beefy.

  • There are a dozen demos of this on YouTube, but yours is the most accurate that I've seen - also you make it appear so effortless. Other guys (won't name names here) are struggling like hell, moving all over the place - and look exhausted 50 seconds into the song.

    WELL done!

  • nice maaan.

  • very good man

  • Just listening to this again and you are spot-on!!

    great job!!

  • You're like freddie washington but without all of his money!! Just kidding!

Great Job!!! How can you pick it out note- for- note...pretty awesome!!

  • that's so sick!

  • great job...

    five stars is not enough!!!

    you play with such facilty!!!

pure sound and it seems so easy...

Do you play in a band?

    Congratulations;

    Nicolas.

  • perfect except for some timing issues here & there. Thanks!

  • play it please, without timing issues here and there!!!!

We are waiting for the video...

  • 9931995; relax bitch, ever hear of constructive criticism? Go take a dump and clean your dirty ass and have some ice cream, cake, soda, blueberry muffins, coffee, cheese cake, and peanut butter with fluff will ya? Please......

  • POOR GUY....

    Stay anonymous,you are right...

    Let real artists go further...

I'm so pleased to feel your frustration..!!!

  • 9931995; yea right ya dopey bitch. U have no idea who your speaking to. If I told you how many recording I'm on your head would spin. You were the one with a problem. I never said this guy was a bad player in fact he plays very well. Obviously you're a high-strung ass-wipe with nothing else to do but get offended by comments that were never directed 2 U. Do U like ice cream & sushi?

  • oh i am afraid...

    I'm SCARED...

    By your stupidity..

    Go back to school..

    To learn good language..

    easy to think..Impossible to do...YEAH!!!

  • 9931995; You are the stupidest asshole I've ever had an exchange with on YouTube. Please stop wasting my time and go wash your smelly hole. Go get a life you FUCKIN moron! Please!

  • I love you...

    you are so funny!!!!

and so so ...I can not find the words...

    Big smack on your face!!!

  • cool bending!

  • All over that "space" in here, this is the smoothest, coolest version of a great baseline. Than-q for bringing it up !

  • very nice

  • BILLY OCEAN " LOVE ZONE" u will rip dat!

  • either your bass is short or your freakin big! i dig the sound tho

  • I like your bass dude!

  • Opps! 66 P Bass as I read on. Hey! I'm a newbie on YT. Looked like the Jamerson "funk machine"Post more bro for these young cats. I am in the music biz and it amazes me how no one can freaking play a damn bass or guitar anymore. They cover everything in ProTools. You are totally organic Bassowman.

  • Brilliant! It is freaking perfect. That 62 P Bass is wicked as well.

  • Wow:D

  • this is just AMAZING wow you are really amazing !

  • I could not tell the difference between you and the original bass sound track you are playing along to, that/you are brilliant!

  • You've inspired me to start playing Bass again. ^^

    Fav'd.

  • yeah same here, how did you get that awesome slap-pop sound?. is it the compressor? ive heard it is a MUST pedal to have. im thinking of getting one

  • I'm glad to hear that! The compressor improves the punch, definitely. Mine is an old Symetrix 501.

  • felecitaciones extraordinario puro talento como negro ....kool..

  • nice playin.

at first i thought your name said basswoman.

  • i like that rich 66 sound of your Prezi more than the 72 and even more than the skinny light 1958? that i suppose Louis Johnson played on the old 1974 records with. I think i mean it was "look out for no 1" Do you know what bass exactly he was playin on this record?

  • I believe it's a Precision telling from the sound and the sleeve photo.

  • Damn he is good

  • Do you know what kind of bass Sir Freddie W' used for the original recording of this track? Anyone?

  • I believe he used his '72 Fender Precision telling from the sound.

  • You're the master,great sound dude,bravo...

  • you rock!!

  • Damn dude, why did you stop!? I was wanting to see and hear more! You are definately a great bass player! Sounded exactly the same! Keep up the great work and thank you for sharing! This one has been added to my playlist!

  • You just can't beat that P-Bass tone! a la Freddie Washington. Bravo!!!

  • Great playing and the tone matches the track too. LOL

  • argh! damn it :)

  • i made it one of my lifes goals to play this riff to this standard...

  • This video hurts cause I can't play this song to save my life. It's really hard for me to learn x.x

  • nice job dude.

  • have you ever tried Womak and Womak Teardrops, brilliant song cool bass.

  • Can u post a lesson vid, not too detailed just so we can watch and play

    (:

  • thats just perfeckt!

cuold you please describe in detail how to play it? that would be great!

  • Superb playing man!

  • Flawless. Even the tone was exact.

  • man you play the hell out that thing man...keep it up

  • sounding goood

  • i can't bent that little ditty at 2:06 . you have strong fingers man.

    haha

I am gonna make a response video to this sometime this week. You inspired me to say the least. great job.

  • oh man, so nice to see slap on a p-bass! its so much more robust and tougher! i love freddie washington's line on this song and you even got the F# to G# lick to sound right! you're the man!

  • One of my fave bass lines ever and man you play it so fucking well. Nice one!!

  • My thoughts exactly!

  • Glad you agree! Bassowman - can you play Southern Freeez?

  • Amazing!

  • what year is the p bass. what tone!! im a big fan of this style of bass playing....

  • It's from 1966. I'm very happy with it to say the least:-D

  • very good played man, either your a very good player playing for years or you're a good note reader!

  • Tnx! I have played bass from time to time for the last 30 years. This tune I play by ear. However, if there are masses of details and ad libbing, I usually take down a noted transcription to be able to be precise. I do that on the tune 4 A.M. that I'm playing on another video.

  • simply perfect! congrats!

  • Perfeito. 5 Stars!

  • I love that bassline and you play it very well. It was very good to watch and listen to. 5 Stars.

  • I didn't know you were on Youtube! :-) But where are you on facebook? My father just signed up. You play great by the way! The only thing I can play is Guitar Hero...

  • AWESOME

  • you got the same bass sound dude, congratulations

  • Awesome Playing bro, I suscribed to your channel only watching the first minute!. Please help us starters with a break down.

    excellent!

  • Best cover version of this song on YT. Great PBass tone, 5 stars.

  • sweet! This is the best of the play-alongs on youtube for this song!

  • Amazing, simply amazing. As a bass player myself, this piece is just a fabulous piece that makes me want to play more and more. I as wondering where learned to play this from; I myself have been trying to play it.

  • best cover i've seen. thank you. a breakdown instruction of the section with the string bending and another for the short stucatto bit around 3:06 would be deeply appreciated. fantastic playing and please post more vids!

  • Tnx! I'll come back with some details.

  • well done old boy, well done indeed

  • Your phrasing on this is outstanding.

  • Isn't this the tune that Will Smith sampled for "Men In Back"? Good playing, by the way.

  • Yes, true. I've never seen the film though.

  • Really great job, thanks a lot, I was just looking for that bass groove! The other videos are nothing less than great *****

  • for the life of me I can't figure out how to double thumb well, any tips? great job on the vid though.

  • In fact I'm not double thumbing, rather knuckle slapping: the thumb and the outermost knuckle of the ring finger. This gives a less muted tone than double thumbing. I believe this is what Freddie Washington is doing here.

I'll come back soon with some more examples and perhaps some instructional video seconds.

When double thumbing I think of (and use) my thumb basically as a plektrum.

  • Interesting, I definately would be interested in some videos of that. Nice job on the lick at 3:07, and why did you decided to skip out the rest of the song, is it because its much of the same? Keep up the awesome work.

  • Very nice. Now don't be afraid to let that D ring a bit longer like a beat and a half...

  • Thanks! Yes, the timing is crucial (and difficult), the heart of Freddie W's incredible groove.

  • very relaxed playing, good job :)
