And, this was in Nashville on the old WSIX TV. Thre broadcast TV channels in those days, 2, 4 and 5. All signed off at 10pm with the National Anthem (".....now ends another day of broadcasting......"). No cable, satellite, internet, cell phones, calculators, video games, etc. in those days. Not even a TV channel to watch after 10pm.
Oh yes! When I was a kid my brothers and I would always sit in the floor in front of the big B&W TV at night and watch Shock. My younger brother would always flip out when Lon Chaney Jr. began to change into a werewolf, and would hide behind our mother. Afterwards, we boys couldn't sleep without the light on; the Mummy was under the bed, and the Invisible Man in the closet. :) I think I saw all the old Universal horror movies in this manner.
I too remember this in nashville. But I thought it switched to Sat nights in the early 60s. ??
