  • Oh My Gosh that last note always gives me chills!

  • excellent o.o

  • @ninaflute where do you suggest a flute player such as myself travel to for a summer? I thought of Brevard or working at the New York Summer Music Festival... What do you think? I'm advanced enough to play Mozart Flute Concerto in GM and most of the youtube symphony orchestra audition pieces I just found out late and have never played in an orchestra before. I'm a sophomore in college.

  • Holy cow, I first watched this today and I was amazed, You have to be the best flutist (Don't know If I spelt that right) I've ever seen or heard, Your just breathe taking and in the Allegro section, I was breath taken! :D It may be a year or two now, But Nina, Congratulations of getting in to YTSO! :DD!

  • That is a litle bit weir never heard about 26 meazures of Silence before. Anyhow it was fun watching the square Blinds behind you, I think it is Japanese!!! Nah, just kidding, I was watching how cute you are...cough cough cough, I mean the music :)

  • I remember watching this when you first auditioned... you did very well.

I am now attending college as a music major and BY GOLLY YOU GAVE ME CHILLS!!!!!! Fantastic tonguing, and the interpretation is JUST how Tan Dun wanted it! And for some reason, the VERY last note gave me CHILLS - great work. I hope to meet you in person one day! You motivate me to practice, even at 1:22am!

  • @emoClarinetist

thanks emo. so glad I motivate you to practice!!

  • @ninaflute

I just haven't practiced enough this year as a whole lol...

  • Your breathing is so beautifully disguised!

  • "Scroll ahead to ....unless of course you enjoy watching me count 26 measres of rest"...

"Thanks for keeping me company while i counted rests"

    You just rock dear!

  • LOL....you're a great flautist! I SERIOUSLY scrolled to 1:57 lol.

  • Wooww!!

    You play really well!!! =D

    Congratulations!! ;-)

  • do u play the piccolo to ? this is wonderful by the way

  • for a third ledger line E, do you use index and middle fingers on both hands or a different fingering?

  • I waited through all those measures of rests, just to see your intense serious face. Your subtitles drew my concentration away. :)

  • your middle register is very stuffy. OPEN IT UP! Your high register is BEAUTIFUL! But. Seriously, I think it may be your flute since the rest of your sound is SOOOO gorgeous!!! Why did you use reverb!? EW.

  • fluteifytheworld: I always add a tiny bit of reverb when I record in my office or in my basement because the sound is extremely dry.

  • My WOORRRDD!!!

That was BEAUTIFUL tone! Gave me chills! Superb! that was FINE flute playing!

You were well prepared. You looked at the conductor while playing and knew your sheet music. You had amazing intonation. You were well dressed and nice background. The reverb in your room was PERFECT. It wasn't expanded nor was it too "dead." You DID deserve to be in the YTSO! Congratulations! Fantastic! you will go far, my fair lady. :D

  • LOL at subtitles

  • i have to say, you look like this awesome elf maid. woo. you have also this very excellent playing voice.

  • i don't understand the long wait, though you look nice. i don't see a value in counting measures, as it is, it should be keyed in to the music. i thought that's what conductors were for. the whole timeing in music, is it not just silly?

  • I put a lot of emphasis on movement when you're playing. People see me swaying at a concert, and think I'm crazy (they actually come up and ask me about it. XDD).

But it's really because I lose myself in teh music that I play, and how it can sound different depending on what mood you're in.

I just close my eyes, adn I get lost in teh music.

  • is it possible that you could send me the sheet please?

  • Congratulations, maybe I can try next time they have a youtube symphony orchestra, unless it's annual, then I will try next year. I was too young this year. >: (

  • it said all ages welcome

  • In the rules it said that participants had to be at least 14 years of age as of December 1, 2008.

  • Amazing job !

    You're a fantastic flute player! Congratulations ! :D

  • yea i do enjoy seeing you couting the rests because you are so pretty even when you arent playing

and i agree with the real world human to human interaction part.

by the way, which headjoint cut have you used on this video?

  • arpsol: I play a sankyo flute with a RT-1 headjoint (same as the NRS-1)

  • wow so she did that part!!! it was AMAZING!!

  • that was awesome. ^____^

  • just seeing you till 1:52 was as good as hear you playing!

  • Burn her, she must be a witch, because no human can control their breathing that well.

    You really do scare me.

  • GREAT!!!!!!

  • awsome ^^ i love that piece ^.< it sounds so live and cheerful... like a celebration, coming together, journey.... ^^ you did a really good job of performing the piece x3

  • ugh i hate having to count out long periods of rest for auditions. its so hard to stay focused...which is why it matters so much!

  • do u think u can go as high as James Galway's standard??

  • your low notes were superb. It's equally loud as your high notes. Dynamics were there. Thumbs up!

  • you're insane! When U get 2 heaven God will have U play 4 him!

  • What do you think of the Maestro - as conductor and as composer?

  • i play the flute too and you are just amazing! to tell you the truth ......i really think of you as a role model!

  • i like it.

  • 1:57

  • nice staccatos. .

  • WOW

  • Vraiment beau à écouter, pas mal à regarder aussi...

  • This is insane, I love your playing! u really deserve to get to Carnigie Hall

  • THIS COOL

  • Yeah. Still here, watching your sculpted face

  • how many flutes do you have?

  • fantastic : powerful, beautiful and very clean

  • tht's sooooo exciting!

i was wondering if u'd try out!

    btw-i voted 4 u!

  • I could watch you count 126 measures of rest.

  • Wow, good, you got selected! but that is expected, your the best flautist on youtube.

Many people told me it is not easy to play along with the silent conductor. Exactly, it's not easy, I put alot of effort into it, I don't understand why many people used out-of-sync earphone version and got selected?! whereas I didn't! Not fair. I can't be your second flutist now. :(

  • I even memorized the whole flute 1 score.

  • Great!Good Luck! ^^

    From Brazil

  • the heck ! i like watching you nina . haha

  • espectacularr

  • owesome, i think you have performed incredibly good. I think is pretty amazing how you were so relaxed, in my video i was so nerveous. Congratulations

  • Very nice! a LOT of reverb, but nice!

  • Ah - rather, what I meant, was with an Ipod for instance..earphones.

  • I don't know what the rules were but couldn't you have just listened to the ochestra piece while playing..I mean if its not against the rules it seems it probably would've been easier to orient yourself to the music. Though you do fantastic work and are an excellent flutist, regardless. :)

  • Okay, I feel like the shittest flautist now, having watched this! I looked at the music and thought "Hmm, that looks do-able, maybe I should have a go" but now I know I could never play it...

  • Join the club. I feel the exact same way. I was going to try the piece as a little a dream to play with, but then I heard her and just died a bit inside :P

  • i like you as much as i like the chillingchimp videos

  • Hey just to respond to your comment about getting your resolution correct -

If you use Sony Vegas 8, for example, to edit your videos, I use a custom setting.

    1280 x 720 (width x height)

And the format I render it as is MainConcept AVC/AAC (which is *.mp4)

That is essentially the "HD" quality youtube needs.

  • IF we had no idea that you were doing this for the youtube symphony, this would be absolutely hilarious, hahah. Like all of the sudden you start playing out of nowhere @ 1:57 and then are playing different notes to keep up with the orchestra. :O)

  • woooooow . very nice

  • NIce job! I noticed on page 2 of the Flute part a number of varying articulations which I try to bring out in my video audition. Question: Shouldn't there be somewhat of a discernable difference in the lenght and attack of the accented notes, the staccatto notes and then especially, the staccatto notes with the tie over them that follow the 2 fast stacatto notes?! Does my question make any sense...?

  • HOD72: Gareth Davies plays some of these passages in his LSO masterclass so I would suggest watching his video and listening carefully to how he plays it.

  • Great idea! I will listen to what he did. I'm not sure how much they will scrutinize the execution of these different markings, especially in view of the speeding tempo to the finale that make it tremendous feat to put all that in there!! and considering the full orchestra is at ff, which would hide most of the flute anyway!

  • Hi. That was really good! You should def. audition! Good Luck! :)

  • you will be play in youtube orchestra...

  • resolveu meus problemas

  • i like displays of raw skill bit that does not make the player heart and soul does. skill only is only identifed with other musicans not the public

  • fedest. Knus Sille

  • Tan Dun must have a hard time finding flutes, those parts are friggin hard! I would never write anything that challenging

  • no, Tan Dun just wanted to suffocate all the flutists with his 2nd page.

  • well I can relate to that!

  • i could play this piece its kinda hard but im practicing......

i know right i think his suffocationg us too on 2nd page...

  • I love the second page though D: It's more fun to play and sounds better.

  • stunning!

  • That was so sweet! (I was with you through the rests also!)

  • You're amazing!

  • Haha, Nina you're too funny :) The bassoon part has a whole bunch of rests too; it felt so awkward resting for that long. Great job playing :D

  • nina u r looking great and ur dress is very pretty too. dont hve to say anything about ur flute skill, cant be explained in words.

  • nice lol u very good :)

  • Your brilliant! = ]

  • well done, i might have a go, ive not played in a few years, just wanted to listen to you and how it should be played

  • I heard a couple mistakes, but you probably noticed them as well. You are frikken good!!! I play flute and when I downloaded the sheet music for this piece from youtube, I said to myself, "Ummmmmmm...........looks like I'm most certainly not even going to try this!" but I'm glad I got to see you take a shot at it.

  • Your really good. I play Trombone and hope to try out though i doubt i would have a fighting chance, i play 4 years, now.

  • If you enter the contest, then I don't think anyone else would have a chance to enter the contest.

    :O

  • amazing

  • ahh you're so good!!!

  • ROFL "Unless you enjoy watching me count 26 measures of rest" I lol'ed

    Very nice playing tho :)

  • very amazing!!! i plan to audition myself except for 2nd flute. i'm having much difficulty even getting any of the public domain sheets though... that's becoming an issue.

  • YES! I was praying you would audition for this! This is absolutely gorgeous. I'm auditioning on English Horn, and I really hope to meet you.I know you're going, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for myself. Good luck, Nina! :)

  • you know what, you're on the YOUTUBE SYMPHONY's favourite list!!

    great!!!

  • Nice job. You're really good. I do enjoy watching you count 26 measures of rest!

  • your really good!! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. :p

  • Wow, I wonder how long she's been playing the flute.

  • Very nice!

  • Dear Ninna,

Thank soo much for this new video I enjoy it a lot.

  • fantastic!!

  • WOW!! I'm still working on the piccolo part. Those E's are hard to get!

  • NICE JOB!!! :)

Roll in your flute a little, most of your notes are sharp and at the last 5 measures, they're more flat.

  • The parts you didn't have to rest were really elegant and on the dot .. No mistakes were noticable .. I wish someone would do this kind of thing with the clarinet ..

  • Wonderful!!!!!!!

    linda ,linda,linda, linda mulher!!!

  • this is really good. :)

will you also upload the 2nd video soon?

what do you play there? bach or brahms?

  • chikatze: you will have to wait and see what I upload for video #2!

  • Such quality of notes and the pitches! Beautiful :)

  • cool :p bravooo

  • I love your sound.

  • Precise!!!!! love it. I can't double tongue that good. Any advice on how to work on that technique?

  • Brilliant insight into the flute part of Eroica - excellent piece - scrolling forwards should be banned - acc to Cage, Varese, Zappa and Slonimsky....

  • amazing

    outstanding

    magnificent!

    :D

idk why you wouldn't get in, you phenomenal!

    lol

    nice vid!

  • there is discrepancy or a little out of sync between the silent-virtual-conductor and woodwind-audio-sample, which should I follow? You told me and miyazawaflute to follow the silent-virtual-conductor's cue, but what if the cue was wrong? what if it's a mistake made by the video editors? will them think it is us who can't follow the orchestra conducting? I see most contestants are using earphones, can I use this way? and follow the audio? much easier to play, will they disqualify me? thx. :)

  • pyrioni: I'm not involved with the contest except as a potential entrant so I can't say what might get you disqualified, except by reading the rules as they are posted. For specific questions, send a message to "symphony." My understanding of the rules is that they prefer us to use the silent conductor for the video we submit, the woodwind virtual conductor video with sound is called a "practice" video. It is harder to use the silent video but in my view, it's more precise...just my thoughts.

  • I want you to enter the contest!!!

One question as I always have; in the rests are there supposed to be other instruments playing??? Just wondering....Also in times to come: I need to find a new flute that will fit my needs: Offset G, B Foot, Open Hole, Drawn or Soldered Keys, and Sterling Silver for the body, I was thinking of the Yamaha YFL-674H...any reccomendations? Your the master of flute so I though I would come to you!!

  • awesome :)

  • Bravo!

  • At first, I thought 'Yay! Now we all have a great example of how to play this!' :)

And now, I'm thinking 'There's no way that I'm gonna be considered for this part if Nina Perlove herself enters the competition!'...

  • I'm a bit afraid that we can stop trying...

  • that was amazing! im sure you'll get in.

  • Stunning. You are an inspiration.

  • very nice !

  • Wow, Bravo, very good teaching video for all of us.

  • If anyone can make the grade for this collaboration, it's Nina! Yay!! **applause**

  • That was brilliant!

  • BRAVO!

  • I wish you the best of luck, Nina. I know this is good enough to get in :)

  • One again, thank you so much. I understand this now better and needless to say, my flute has improve so much in just a couple of weeks with your advices.

But, now that I have improved, I have some additional questions. I get back to you with these questions on the video most related to it.

By the way, Im sure youll get the part in the YouTube symphony Orchestra! :o)

  • Nina, you definitely read my mind. I've keep this part for almost last among my exercises and practice precisely because the rhythm is not the easiest, but coming from you, playing only the flute part it is now so much understandable.

anyways, the video is, like always, a bit funny, because you did know we were tempted to follow along an with you (I bared with you but had a big smile while I did) but this helps us also understand if we are counting correctly.

  • wowowie...sooo amazing nina!!

  • Oh yeah, and to get the "Watch in HD" option, film / save yoru file as 1280 x 720 resolution.

  • you basically have to make it now nina! ^___^ I was thinking of entering, but i already have enough music to learn.

  • Wow, fantastic! Actually, I was waiting for your performance from the beginning. Great. I love it.

  • Awesome job Nina!

  • Great!

I really thought of taping an audition, on Marimba, but I've felt really discouraged lately.

  • fantastic!

  • i love the sound of your flute

    and great job :]

  • wow really good!
