Question, when a piece of metal is formed like that, does the forging process keep the piece in question hot through friction or does the metal stay hot like that by itself ?
I know in some cases as metal if forged, the friction actually keeps the piece heated, not by much but it is a factor sometimes. I was wondering if this is the case in this instance ?

Yep forgetech is in the uk, yorkshire, they normally stock reconditioned old massey 4cwts as well as these huge beasts. Alternative company would be b.s.massey manchester.
an impressive hammer, to be sure. but yet again, the damn flat dies. the hammers may be 95% efficient, but the dies sure aren't. i know most folk use these, yet what a pain in the doopah they are, too.
strange!! the workers use no goggles to preotect their eyes from the intense heat..really bad health care..if this factory here in Norway, 100% the manager will lost his job.
Totally agree -- I'm in the US and I have never been in a factory like this that would allow employees to do this kind of work without hard hats, eye and ear protection and steel-toe boots.
And I have done some design work for the UK (which is where I think this is) and this violates everything I've ben exposed to for their regulations over there.
I don't get what ur talking about - they all have hearing protection - can't really see their boots in the video, and I can see the 2 older guys who are standing back when the hammer is operating aren't wearing safety glasses but the guy in the white shirt is.??
The Massey clear space has its own in built air compressor and is therefore a very energy efficient hammer. This system is fine for sizes up to 2 ton and a stroke of 38" (965mm). This limits the blow energy to 6400 MKg.
The Hydrapneumatic hammer removes the need for an external air supply that is needed on the large hammers.
You can also turn the hammer off when not in use for short periods, this is not possible with compressed air as you would have to wait for the air to build up again.
The Nitrogen is recompressed every stroke as the hammer lifts, when the oil quickrelease valve is opened the compressed nitrogen accelerates the hammer down giving the blow

I wonder if the workers at this factory use this machine to take care of some "business"
You know, like lay someone out on that who hasn't paid their gambling debts...

@hfdpayner If you manage to get your head stuck under a forging hammer like this thats not even a safety concern its just natural selection.

Bit like the Massey clearspace hammer.

Nice tool, is it recompressing the nitrogen after every blow to achieve that efficiency?
