LOL, until now i realize that maya and max are just the same thing. This is really helpful, cuz i can do the exact same rig in 3ds max, it has all the same controllers as maya.
Tutorials are about teaching. From this video I learned absolutely nothing.
For instance, I have a question about that green lattice grid thingy in the shape of the finished rendered object. Is that part drawn first? Or does that come after the finished object is drawn?
Do you bang away at the mouse and keyboard drawing 3 dimensional lattices?
How do you teach the computer about the 3rd dimension?
Two dots with a line drawn between them is completely ambiguous when it comes to depth.
Did u use latice for the tank tread? I used Wire tool for that but it kills my pc ;/. I used it for the chain. How did U made the gears move properly with the tank tread? Was it threw the expression editor? and the omega=V/r? than V1=V2
hey what pc do I need to be able to use blender normally ? (laptop if possible). I got a desktop Pentium 4 3.2 ghz 1 gb ram and an OLD OLD FX5200 256mb - with this pc I can't model meshes that are above 24k polygons >.<
@ollieflp It depends, some places like to see the qualifications, but other people i know would say "oh i've had people here who have degree's, and it don't do nothin for em". it depends where you want to go. Personally, I'd recomend doing both. Go to university, and whilst doing it, see if you can help out on some projects.
@ollieflp Do so, but wether you get in or not, get some serious practise in, and build a portfolio. Theres nothing like having solid proof of your work. Good luck!
@ClipperMD Cheers bro i think your right after meeting a few developers at last years games expo in London it seemed that having proof and knowledge of that proof was the most important thing. How have you got on?
@ollieflp im still going through tutorials, atm i have it downloaded, along with Zbrush, but im saving up and when i get my last pay in august, ima build my new comp (intel i7 @ 3.8Ghz, radeon 5870 x 2, 12Gb DDR3 RAM, :D etc) and buy the full latest versions of maya, Zbrush, and 3DSMax.
Im not in the game developing career yet, though i hope to be at some point.
Not true, whilst Maya is quite popular amounts film and advertising companies, and max popular amongst game companies, the two are not mutually exclusive. Third party tools for game such as Havok work on both platforms, and a lot of game companies are switching over to maya as 3dsmax has certain limitations maya does not. Max has been around a lot longer than Maya and is often hard for companies to make a switch over to a different package.
@burnzay burnzay is right, Maya allows for a lot of workflow benefits for organic artists, I still prefer max for environment work for the most part though. Props, they can come from maya.
actually quite the opposite. more and more video game developers are turning towards maya for stuff. battlefield so i've heard use maya extensively for the newer battlefield games.
Its done with Maya, although i dont really use Maya anymore, I use max for work. Good luck doing this sort of thing in Max, its not impossible, but not as easy. : )
Been spending days trying to make a realistic animated tank track.
How do you avoid getting your induvidual treads getting squished together near the sharper ends of the lattice?
Whenever i use this technique my treads seems to bundle up near the ends which means when i start rotating the nurb circles the treads are uneven distributed on the track
Attach the tread pieces individually to the circle, each with their own motion path constraint, and do this when the path is in a circle, then when you use the lattice to manipulate the circle into a track shape, if there are gaps, you might need to go back and add more track pieces
Tessellate the front and push in and out vertexes until you find a desirable shape. Or at least that's what I'd do. Fenders are not that hard, really. Requires patience though. You could try building on an image source, too.
The control panel is made from nurbs splines. These are easy to create and they don't render out so you don't have to worry about hiding them. Then just use set driven keys to make them into controllers.
Thanks for the demonstration .. But I'm new to animation and rigging, would you mind telling me where to get more info on that? or how to set a driven key on something?
have you ever used the digital tutors tutorial videos, as i have seen a car rig one and wondered if it would cover what u have shown for your car character?
Amazing rigs m8. I've always wondered what the best way of doing tank tracks was. I thought I was just doing it the long way round lol, but I guess I was doing it right. I never knew about the whole geo-constraint and locator thing though, that was really useful. Thanks for the upload.
Well this video is aimed towards people that already know the basic fundamentals of rigging. It was created as more of a guide to show some of the more creative solutions to building rigs such as the tanks treads. There are already plenty of resources out there with more step but step instructions, though I do plan on posting another video with more in depth look at some the techniques shown here.

This is very good work. I'm now starting my career in Game Design and Animation, and I must say...this is more inspiration and motivation. I can't wait to get busy with this. Keep up the good work man. Peace

Okay. I'll try that. Cheers mate. I'll let you know how it goes. Incase you're wondering - I'm animating a Cylon Centurion - which should be fun to use for compositing later on. :-D
i have learned just about everything about creating rigs EXCEPT how to accually make my model move in refernce to the skeleton, like in all the rigs ive seen, like when u move the horses tail then show the model the tail in the models rotation has change, if you could explain this my animations would really kick off, Please help
hi there, i was wondering how do you attach the tank rail pieces to the nurbs curve, i've been using the motion path tool but i cant get the same result as you did. would you please kindly elaborate more on how you do it? thank you so much for your time and attention.
The only way I found to attach geometry to a curve was to use a motion path. The trick was using a seperate motion path constraint for each individual piece of track. (took ages, there were 80 bits of track) And each piece you attach, you increase the ofset from the previous piece. (you can find this in the motion path attributes) Hope this helps. If I get time ill post a more indepth video on this topic as I have recieved a few questions aboutit.

I did not intend for this video to be a thorough 101 class on rigging, instead it is aimed at people with some experience in the field whom may be curious on how some of the rigs in my Showreel worked.
Keep posting comments though, I'm happy to answer any questions
err... this tutorial is useless. i learn nothing. instead of showing off, and telling us "see how my character is attatched... y dont ya tell us HOW to.
I think you meant "I learnt nothing". I don't think I actually said " See how my character is attached" nor do I think I was "showing off". That's what my "Showreel" is for.
Fantastic!! Im about to start using maya and im guessing i will be watching / reading quite a lot of tutorials, ill have to check out more of your stuff :D

People misunderstand why it's free. It's
not cheap, it just open source so anybody is
free to pitch in to further develop the software. If you learn Blender, you
should be able to catch on to other software
later on when you're rich.
