  • I LOVE everything you've done.

  • i see that horse and i think... "Haters gonna hate"

  • @3nasacova lol this is a reel, not a tutorial.

  • LOL, until now i realize that maya and max are just the same thing. This is really helpful, cuz i can do the exact same rig in 3ds max, it has all the same controllers as maya.

  • Nice very NICEE!!!;D

  • i know its not but srsly it looks like the horse is shufflin!

  • Tutorials are about teaching. From this video I learned absolutely nothing.

For instance, I have a question about that green lattice grid thingy in the shape of the finished rendered object. Is that part drawn first? Or does that come after the finished object is drawn?

Do you bang away at the mouse and keyboard drawing 3 dimensional lattices?

How do you teach the computer about the 3rd dimension?

Two dots with a line drawn between them is completely ambiguous when it comes to depth.

  • Cool rigs. Just one thing, thats not a tank, its a bradley fighting vehicle. It carries 6 infantrymen in the back and shoots a 25mm round.

  • não chega nem ao pes do cinema 4d ta ridiculo bagaceira ta um lixo de 3d que droga de programa e esse?

  • thanks and God bless

  • Man thanks :D

  • great tutorial. i like how you have multiple objects to use as examples, like deforming meshes and rigid meshes like the tank.

do you work in the video game industry by chance?

  • Did u use latice for the tank tread? I used Wire tool for that but it kills my pc ;/. I used it for the chain. How did U made the gears move properly with the tank tread? Was it threw the expression editor? and the omega=V/r? than V1=V2

  • why its called tutorial its just a show..

  • That tank was a badass rig

  • Me before the video T_T

    *Video Starts

OMG THAT'S THE CUTEST THING IN THE WORLD!!! ^_^

  • hey, this looks like maya, am i right? if so, is it true that its mainly max for modelling and maya for rigging/anim?

  • hi, how would you get the wheels to roll??

  • hey what pc do I need to be able to use blender normally ? (laptop if possible). I got a desktop Pentium 4 3.2 ghz 1 gb ram and an OLD OLD FX5200 256mb - with this pc I can't model meshes that are above 24k polygons >.<

  • nice rig. i've never done such a complex rig before haha looks cool to me.

  • wow! i liked the car! can you make a tutorial on how to model that car?? Please!

  • las patas de atras estan mal.......... son patas de un caballo no de una gallina!!!!!

  • the bradley looks very nice ;)

  • why does its spine look rigid and like pivoting around its belly with a wavy motion, like a boat on waves?... :P

  • @octavianmihailescu I mean, the horsey, of course :P

  • @octavianmihailescu I dont see a boat on waves in there, but the animation is pretty basic, it was on of my first rigs :P

  • so do you start out making the modeal as like the boons and the add detail??

  • @ronniereiff huh?

  • Great rig! Very flexible! Cheers!

  • from 5:50 onwards, is perfect. It cant be more than a few MB of video, and it can replace my entire porn collection!. Fantastic!.

  • Mech i need you to make my car work

  • Is it better to go college then uni to learn this or to do hands on short courses to get into the gaming industry?

  • @ollieflp It depends, some places like to see the qualifications, but other people i know would say "oh i've had people here who have degree's, and it don't do nothin for em". it depends where you want to go. Personally, I'd recomend doing both. Go to university, and whilst doing it, see if you can help out on some projects.

  • @ClipperMD sounds like a good idea ill look at open uni

  • @ollieflp Do so, but wether you get in or not, get some serious practise in, and build a portfolio. Theres nothing like having solid proof of your work. Good luck!

  • @ClipperMD Cheers bro i think your right after meeting a few developers at last years games expo in London it seemed that having proof and knowledge of that proof was the most important thing. How have you got on?

  • @ollieflp im still going through tutorials, atm i have it downloaded, along with Zbrush, but im saving up and when i get my last pay in august, ima build my new comp (intel i7 @ 3.8Ghz, radeon 5870 x 2, 12Gb DDR3 RAM, :D etc) and buy the full latest versions of maya, Zbrush, and 3DSMax.

Im not in the game developing career yet, though i hope to be at some point.

  • good use of lattice deformers. good video

  • Not true, whilst Maya is quite popular amounts film and advertising companies, and max popular amongst game companies, the two are not mutually exclusive. Third party tools for game such as Havok work on both platforms, and a lot of game companies are switching over to maya as 3dsmax has certain limitations maya does not. Max has been around a lot longer than Maya and is often hard for companies to make a switch over to a different package.

  • @burnzay burnzay is right, Maya allows for a lot of workflow benefits for organic artists, I still prefer max for environment work for the most part though. Props, they can come from maya.

  • maya is more for films max well games and stuff

  • @zepixeltracer

actually quite the opposite. more and more video game developers are turning towards maya for stuff. battlefield so i've heard use maya extensively for the newer battlefield games.

  • fucking hate rigging...its no longer in the artistic field... i rather be an engineer :) check out my modeling and animation on my channel :)

  • Why do you call this a "tutorial"? Seems like a demonstration to me!

  • great setups on the rigs i love them all.

Forgive me asking but how were you able to get the curve to rotate within the lattice?

  • well done tutorial. thank you.

  • play...................

  • Thanks this was very helpful,

  • Rigging Tutorial? Where is the tutorial...??? this was a portfolio... nice btw. but not a tutorial

  • A tutorial?

  • and where the tutorial? !!!!!!!

  • I second that.

  • its maya

  • is this Maya or 3ds max? cause i don't have Maya and want to find out how to do all these awesome setups.

  • Its done with Maya, although i dont really use Maya anymore, I use max for work. Good luck doing this sort of thing in Max, its not impossible, but not as easy. : )

  • is maya free or does it cost?

  • are you like joking or something.... ="/

  • its not free but it's pretty cheap.

    just above $4000 that's it. =]

  • original is free, and cracked version u can free download with torrent

  • WHY? don´t USe Maya?

  • how did you make the nurbs menu?

  • how can i see the skeleto? which key is the hotkey?

  • omfg maya is so confusing and brain breaking

  • can u give me a clue how to connect these control panels with rig

  • how do u put the detail up?

  • GJ.

Been spending days trying to make a realistic animated tank track.

How do you avoid getting your induvidual treads getting squished together near the sharper ends of the lattice?

Whenever i use this technique my treads seems to bundle up near the ends which means when i start rotating the nurb circles the treads are uneven distributed on the track

    Thanks

  • Attach the tread pieces individually to the circle, each with their own motion path constraint, and do this when the path is in a circle, then when you use the lattice to manipulate the circle into a track shape, if there are gaps, you might need to go back and add more track pieces

  • Many thanks.

I was using a circle for each motion path.

  • the wheel have skin and weigth or is just a parent

  • The wheels are just under the lattice from memory, there is no skining on them

  • can someone make a good xsi rigging tutorial!?! Its always max or maya!

  • Guao si tu haces eso yo quiero ser como tu :D en ese sentido claro ;P

  • PLEASE how can I make control panel like that one with the car?!! PLEASE SOMEONE TELL ME!!!

  • Tessellate the front and push in and out vertexes until you find a desirable shape. Or at least that's what I'd do. Fenders are not that hard, really. Requires patience though. You could try building on an image source, too.

  • Sorry, damn. Responded to wrong comment on the wrong video as well lol

  • lol no problem :D can you now reply to my real comment here :D ?

  • To be honest, I have only rigged bipeds before. I have not used such a control panel either, so I wouldn't know.

    You should research google.

  • the controls he maded is just nurbs

  • The control panel is made from nurbs splines. These are easy to create and they don't render out so you don't have to worry about hiding them. Then just use set driven keys to make them into controllers.

  • Thanks for the demonstration .. But I'm new to animation and rigging, would you mind telling me where to get more info on that? or how to set a driven key on something?

  • oh btw, I use 3D Studio Max

  • what settings did you use in the Attach to Motion Path Options to attach the tracks to the curve?

  • u sud upload tutorial of it its gonna help us n gonna make u famous lol nyway its good

  • this is a plugin?

  • is not tutorial, is it? :/

  • Im sure google can. IK = Inverskinomatics FK = Forward Kinomatics

  • seariously can anyone tell me the difference between IK and FK?

  • Check out Digital Tutors, Rigging in Maya.

  • AWESOME!!

  • Man i have Cinema 4D and iv seen some nice fcken work with it but u have to pay for tuts and i cant find any on youtube only a few

  • torrents help, conceptart org may help, google may help.

  • its maya u can definetly know from the axis on the upper right corner... i can tell cause i am watching it on my pc :D

  • first of all, awesome designs, and after you know that you are more than just good, keep going pal!!

  • have you ever used the digital tutors tutorial videos, as i have seen a car rig one and wondered if it would cover what u have shown for your car character?

  • Awesome!

  • How the hell do you do that i dont know i suck HELP ME!!!!!!!!!

  • Who do you build na wheels and the chassi of the car; can you make a tutorial about that ???

  • which is bettr 3ds max or maya

  • 3DS MAX

  • bubba, that's like asking what's better, oil painting or watercolor

i'm no pro, but i'll say maya is better for animals and toons, while 3DS is better for rigid mechanics

but the key here is you, not the program

  • 3ds max

  • What program is that?

  • Autodesk Maya

  • could be cinema 4d

  • no its maya

  • It's not maya.

  • yes it is maya... I can tell because I have the program

  • I assure you , it IS Maya. other apps may be able to do similar things, but this is Maya being used for what it does best.

  • Amazing rigs m8. I've always wondered what the best way of doing tank tracks was. I thought I was just doing it the long way round lol, but I guess I was doing it right. I never knew about the whole geo-constraint and locator thing though, that was really useful. Thanks for the upload.

  • wow...

  • thats mad how can you get this progrme

  • the program alone won't do it. prepare to practise some years...

  • Thats true. I barely have 1 years experience and still have a trillion things to learn.

  • You buy it.

  • For $5000.

  • If you can't afford this software start learning Blender. It's free and powerful.

People misunderstand why it's free. It's

not cheap, it just open source so anybody is

free to pitch in to further develop the software. If you learn Blender, you

should be able to catch on to other software

    later on when you're rich.

  • Any ressource to go into that stuff? Books? DVDs?

  • maya its esier than bryce?

  • i think this is Maya. isn't it?

  • Yep all maya, textures made in photoshop

  • wow man alot of work went into that..

  • Wow, amazing job man. You know your shit.

  • yeah but were is the tutorial part of this ????

  • Well this video is aimed towards people that already know the basic fundamentals of rigging. It was created as more of a guide to show some of the more creative solutions to building rigs such as the tanks treads. There are already plenty of resources out there with more step but step instructions, though I do plan on posting another video with more in depth look at some the techniques shown here.

  • Are you for hire for personal rigging training?

  • Where abouts are you based?

  • where do i download it?

  • The models and rigs shown here are not available for download yet.

  • This is very good work. I'm now starting my career in Game Design and Animation, and I must say...this is more inspiration and motivation. I can't wait to get busy with this. Keep up the good work man. Peace

  • Also it your problem could be the resault of changing the type of rotation you're using. Genereally when animating you should stick to Gimble.

  • I'm having trouble with an animation I'm doing. When I adjust the bones using the pivot control, it looks awesome. It pivots exactly how I want it to. But after I set my keyframes and then hit play, it doesn't take the same path as when I'm using the pivot to set up keyframes. Any ideas?

  • Sounds like you are animating the bones directly, this is something you should never do. Once you have build your skeleton, you should then build controllers (usually Curves or locators as they dont render) and use them to manipulate and animate the bones. Once your Skeleton is made, and you've finnished skinning the mesh, you shouldn't have a need to select the bones and you should hide/freeze them.

  • Okay. I'll try that. Cheers mate. I'll let you know how it goes. Incase you're wondering - I'm animating a Cylon Centurion - which should be fun to use for compositing later on. :-D

  • Thanks for sharing your Knowledge.

  • i have learned just about everything about creating rigs EXCEPT how to accually make my model move in refernce to the skeleton, like in all the rigs ive seen, like when u move the horses tail then show the model the tail in the models rotation has change, if you could explain this my animations would really kick off, Please help

  • Sounds like your missing the 'Skinning' Step. Look up tutorials on Skinning. without it there is no connection between the rig and the mesh.

  • Fucking Amazing...simply brilliant...now that i see this, i feel like my animation is shiiiit.

Please check out my animation and tell me what you think.

Its my first ever animation using any kind of program like this. let me know what you think.

  • hi there, i was wondering how do you attach the tank rail pieces to the nurbs curve, i've been using the motion path tool but i cant get the same result as you did. would you please kindly elaborate more on how you do it? thank you so much for your time and attention.

  • The only way I found to attach geometry to a curve was to use a motion path. The trick was using a seperate motion path constraint for each individual piece of track. (took ages, there were 80 bits of track) And each piece you attach, you increase the ofset from the previous piece. (you can find this in the motion path attributes) Hope this helps. If I get time ill post a more indepth video on this topic as I have recieved a few questions aboutit.

  • Thank you so much for your reply, looking forward for more of your tutorials.

  • wow, awesome! very enlightening video.

  • For more information on Rigging search for 'Rigging 101' as well as the websites 'Highend3d' and 'cgTalk' Also the alias website has some helpful tutorials.

  • o ok thx but can i ask 1 more thing how do you connect the skin and the bones

  • Connect using a smooth or ridgid bind skin constraint. Depending on which version of Maya your using, both smooth and ridgid skin binding constraints are found under the animation menu set. Generally Smooth Bind is prefered as you have more controll of the deformation to the skin. Once skinned you'll need to paint weights. This tool can be found in the same section.

  • hey were are the bones i cant find the thing to put bones on it

  • bones in Maya are refered to as joints. and they can be found in the animation menu.

  • Dear god, thanks a lot Burnzay.I work in maze for 5 zears. My latest work for my pleasure is t-55. I study a lot of techniques of creating threads, but all flips some. Please could you send me peace of your threads with expressions and set driven keys atc..? Im not rigger, some basic things but not to much. My T55 need perfect rigg. Will be my pleasure to learn and use your technique form my armour beauty (-: Please contact me.

  • Well thats sure a time saver!

  • dear sir i liked your video, but can this software be used to bring a working car engine to life,as if it were a real car engine,i would also like to know what the name of this software that you are using, and what speed of computer and ram would i need to use it,and also i would love to know if you know of any software that would best suit my engine,

  • what are you talking about????

  • Where abouts did you study in Australia mate?

  • Melbourne CGC now know as Quantum

  • Ok Thanks was just curious. I'm from Melbourne too, St Kilda. Cheers.

  • I did not intend for this video to be a thorough 101 class on rigging, instead it is aimed at people with some experience in the field whom may be curious on how some of the rigs in my Showreel worked.

Keep posting comments though, I'm happy to answer any questions

  • err... this tutorial is useless. i learn nothing. instead of showing off, and telling us "see how my character is attatched... y dont ya tell us HOW to.

  • I think you meant "I learnt nothing". I don't think I actually said " See how my character is attached" nor do I think I was "showing off". That's what my "Showreel" is for.

  • Very nice work !

  • Fantastic!! Im about to start using maya and im guessing i will be watching / reading quite a lot of tutorials, ill have to check out more of your stuff :D

  • This is an excellent video. I love the tank tracks especially!

  • what program are you using/???

  • Maya 7. and Camtasia Studio for capture

  • i got maya 8.5 unlimited... and i hav no idea how it works... ur vid is great but it dunn help lmao

  • great stuff!!!

  • Thanks for watching, hope it was helpful. Check out my reel if you want to see these characters in action.
