Taking into account the underlying theme of "defiance of destiny" provides some truth behind many theories that she survives. Ico was fated to die in that sarcophagus and become a shadow and Yorda to become a vessel for her mother and to never leave the castle. Ico defies his by escaping and inadvertently losing his horns and help Yorda defy hers by killing the queen which released her from becoming a vessel and, since the castle dies with the queen, Yorda's imprisonment. A happy ending.
Fumito Ueda is just as important to me as Shigeru Miyamoto. ;_; God, these games are awesome...Best note to end a game on of all time. Gotta love a game that makes the credits make you wanna cry. lol
excuse each other, we all suffer from the "we wanna know what the fuck happened in this game and not have to pay another 50 dollars wen the next game comes out"
@PrinceOfNsanity That is if you believe in the ridiculous hypotheses that they are dead or that Ico is dreaming and Yorda died, both of which have so little evidence to ever be held up as correct.
@BrandNewSongz I swear these two have a 'STORICAL' connection. I don't consider SOTC to have a bad ending, in fact, i'm happy because it is a sign there'll BE a sequeal.
@BrandNewSongz Absolutely the best games. I beat ICO in about two days, and at first I thought it ended at Yorda sending Ico out on the boat and I was so upset because I was like "You spend the whole game trying to save her and then we fail! What?" Then when you find her I got so happy. Lol.
I really love that game and the song. The whole entire castle I thought was so beautiful. I couldn't help but smile and cry when I watched this ending the first ime I played the game. I wish there were castles as beautiful as that one in real life.
oh god -.- i never finished the game caus i was scared of those ghosts xD but now i see the ending i think i going to ask my uncle to give me back my old ps2 and ico to finish it i did cry when i saw this xD
I am hoping that if and when the last guardian comes out it will bring back a touching stoyline. not just graphics and bs, but back to the days when storys moved you in an emotional way
@RedasFIRE417 well Wander is the first one. he gained the curse from dormin and his coming generations gain the same horns/curse. Something about the shaman saying Wander in some generation or another must do something to break the curse even if it takes a thousand years, and Ico being the newest one from hundreds breaks the curse (in the literal sense: he breaks his horns off).
@loser9ifcation Actually, that could have all been a dream. With Yorda in what appears to be a permanent shadow state, and Ico possibly being dead... They could have both died (Ico on the boat and Yorda in the sinking castle) and we would never even know.
@TheInunah Lemme add onto this. Yorda's freed from stone, but at what cost? It's not clear if Ico's even ALIVE after the final battle, but Yorda still puts him on that boat and sends him off, alone... I think she was determined to get him out of there, even if he were dead. And even in the final part of the ending, you could never be sure if Ico and Yorda had lived or died.
you know I didn't know I beat this game till just now... I remembered the beach and that's about it... also I rememer running on the beach but I seriously may have never found her because I thought that you were just continually on the beach @ the end... Unless you run around w her on the beach afterwards lol so maybe I didn't beat the game after all xD
The music is at the wrong timing. When we see Yorda putting Ico in the boat the song is up to "You were there". Anyways the beach part was just ICO's dream unfortunately :(
@druha10304 ICO there is another one out called trico I think, I don't play games anymore... But I seen the trailer you should check it out it's amazing...
I know it sounds cheesy, but this song reminds me of an old childhood friend. I just spoke to her a week ago for the first time in ten years. We finally found each other thanks to facebook. That line "You were there; countless visions that haunt me in my sleep. You were there; but forgotten all promises we keep" really hit close to home with me.
the almost make me cry with this game and shadow of the colosso hope they make the hd version for ps3 and wating for the last guardian I think that game will make me cry lol
Still as moving as when I was playing the game as a kid. The moment you realize you could play the game after the credits rolled and the cut-scene started...oh man what an amazing friggin work of art masterpiece this game is. @Padfoot4395 well guess what, theres a ico/shadow of the colossus collection for ps3 in HD and 3D coming out in april 2011!!!! and the last guardian comes during the holidays 2011!!! :D
To me, both ICO and Shadows of the Colossus are two of the most beautiful games I've ever had the chance to experience. It's like they're something more than simply a game... never has any game transported me to it's world the way these two games do.
@Epoq I think the sense height of the landscapes and all that vivid scenery and that realistic architecture help take you out of the real world and engage you more in the game world
@TalkingInstruments b/c she needed to get all tha darkness off her before she could leave.... @ 1:24 those things might have helped her achieve that....
You know, the whole Wander to Ico thing makes a little more sense. I don't think Ico was directly related to Wander at all. I think that Wander was the first Horned child, in a long line of cursed children of that village. Since the children were sent away as kids, they couldn't reproduce/continue the family line. THe curse continued each time with a new born, once a previous child died. So SOTC to Ico was probably 1000 years apart (if Ico was 10 yrs) and 10 yrs for all 99 children before him.
So when the castle finally collapsed, those statues were destroyed, and the parts of herself that she gave away returned to her, and restored her. Not to mention, the lovely little watermelon scene that was placed at the end. It just seems Right that their story would have a happy ending since Wander didn't and Mono's was kind of left hanging. The chain of sadness that started with Wander ends with Ico....and Yorda...eating watermelon. Till the next game folks!
You know, I do remember the creator saying he interpreted the game ending in his own way, much like he wanted everyone who played it to interpret it in their own way. So here is what I think could've been possible. All of the children's souls gave what was left of themselves to Yorda (whose body was perhaps too weak and useless Plus stone at that point). I think every time she activated those statues with the electricity thing, (1:26)she was giving away some of her energy or soul.
I heard so much of it and SotC. And I still wanna play it. Just because playing it self is a totally different feeling, and this games are so well done. I love old buildings. I cried while seeing the ending the first time.
ok. that is a reason. I will check it out by myself, when I can play it.
Its just.. really sad. Because SotC ending is also mean. so i hoped for a good anding in ICO. But that makes it even greater. Less games end bad.^^

it was pretty and all but hell i hated it
you cant ask me to like a place filled with deadly tramps and shadows that want to take yorda away
also from an artistic point of view i must say it wasnt that impressive, it was big and the paths crossed over so many times it felt like a maze without being confusing which is good, however the excesive use of metal and things like pipelines gave it an industrial feel that was totally out of place
There is a prequel to ICO. It's called Shadow of the Collosus. The game play is very different, but enjoyable. The artistic stylings and atmosphere is still intact.
The makers of these two games is coming out with a third game called Guardian. From the looks of the trailer it will be a mix of the two previous game's gameplay. It's coming for the PS3.
Actually, Ico is a decendant of Wander who came to what seems to be a similar power that the Queen has.
Since Sotc is a prequel to Ico, that means The Queen and Dormin are of the same origin. That sword Ico used, is the same sword that locked away Dormin in Sotc.
Think about it. If it was actually a chain of children than how could that chain continue if all children with horns are indirectly killed.
I personally think that the horned baby that shows up at the end of SotC either wrecked havoc as an adult or was an indication of the taint that some of the children would subsequently face.
All the children with horns FROM THAT VILLAGE were sent to die, but there may pretty much be children with horns living in other places, therefore continuing the chain. If you think about it, he is sent to die when he's like 12, so he probably wasn't born on the village, because in that case they would've sent him to die when he was little.
i actually did finish SOTC, But never got ot finish ico, ONly got through the begining, I understand where he came from, But i just had to see this ending for myself mainly because i never knew what happened in the end of ico untill now.
Wander started the lineage of horned boys. ICO is one of his descendants, and for that reson people think he is cursed. That's the reason they concealed him inside the castle.
best game and ending ever!!! by the way i think the yorda dies in sinking castle place and ico died from the crash against wall and the beach is the afterlife
Years ago, I played this game to the end. I was fortunate enough to find it for $20 at Target... I never got to see the ending. My ps2 crapped out at that moment... I just finally saw the ending, and I have to say that it's a spiritual experience, just how beautiful and worthwhile the wait was. Ico is without a doubt a game that should be remembered forever, and put into some kind of PS3 or PS4 download program. Like Okami, this is a timeless masterpiece.
I totally agree. ICO was the second game I bought for my PS2 (GTA III was the first), and ICO left me in awe. I still have the game and the guide to this day. I usually trade games in once I'm done with them, but ICO, SotC, and Okami I'll never part with. Masterpieces, for sure!
One of the many underrated video games that leaves 'footprints' after you play it. I just wished more games held such beauty in both design and story. I honestly believe, for me, that because it kept with it's original voices and language, the game maintained most of its charm. A beautiful story of a boy and girl finding common ground and depending on each other for survival. The game still rips my heart out with the story. Thank you for the post.
i feel pretty good after i beat the game :) i believe everybody had good feelings in the end. i beat this game yesterday and i feel good. this song is very good and beatuful. BTW im a girl and i like games :p
"Fumito Ueda's own interpretation of ICO's ending is that Ico is dreaming of meeting Yorda once again."
ok, so it's an /interpretation/, but remember when he 'theorized' that SOTC was the prequel to Ico and that's just what he though? yeah, and later he said it was true...
This game's ending is beautiful. It was a really big pay off for playing. I found the game for cheap. I still don't think it sells for much if you get it from a brick and mortar store(maybe online too). do a search on gamestop to see if a near one has a copy(I think I bought mines for 6-10 bucks).
When wander became a baby and the girl took him with her and raised him and in ico he is 7 years old and its wander
treso1234 2 years ago
problem is....Wander has RED hair and Ico has black hair...so how can it be Wander..?
shadowzapdos 2 years ago 2
No. It is not Wander. I recommend picking up a copy of Shadow of the Colossus and replaying it. Wander is not Ico.

Thanks for the memories, hard to believe it's been 7 years. Hopefully a sequel is getting announced this year.

They're announcing something. No telling yet how it's related to either of the previous games.

i heard there coming out with another game, one that takes place after sotc, but befoe ICO. I think
slimloco3 3 years ago
SOTC takes place before ICO so whats with the ICO was before ICO

RE: MidnaFanDDD17
Actually, Ico is a decendant of Wander who came to what seems to be a similar power that the Queen has.
Since Sotc is a prequel to Ico, that means The Queen and Dormin are of the same origin. That sword Ico used, is the same sword that locked away Dormin in Sotc.

i cried in the end of the game.

Is the ending on the beach a dream or did it actual happen?
Yamatoshadow 3 years ago
It really happened and the beach can be found in SoTC. At least one that looks really really close to the one in ICO but without the water melons.
robotai89 3 years ago
Hey are Dormin and THE QUEEN the SAME PERSON?
MidnaFanDDD17 3 years ago
no, dormin was defeated at the end of sotc
the horns are proof of this
Metalscavenger 3 years ago 2

Is the little dude, "Wanda" From SOTC, sorry i missed out on ICO :(
beaniiii 3 years ago
no it is not.
digitalimpulse 3 years ago
Wanderer was the little dudes, Ico's, ancestor. Wanderer began the chain of children with horns. (In the end of SoTC the baby had horns) :)
MeleeMasterMario 3 years ago 2
Think about it. If it was actually a chain of children than how could that chain continue if all children with horns are indirectly killed.
I personally think that the horned baby that shows up at the end of SotC either wrecked havoc as an adult or was an indication of the taint that some of the children would subsequently face.
Elnidfse 3 years ago
All the children with horns FROM THAT VILLAGE were sent to die, but there may pretty much be children with horns living in other places, therefore continuing the chain. If you think about it, he is sent to die when he's like 12, so he probably wasn't born on the village, because in that case they would've sent him to die when he was little.
dioseolo 3 years ago
all the boys who are born with horns are sent to that place when there around 12. when there horns get large enough

i actually did finish SOTC, But never got ot finish ico, ONly got through the begining, I understand where he came from, But i just had to see this ending for myself mainly because i never knew what happened in the end of ico untill now.
zuriku 3 years ago
This two are the same of shadow of colossus? or there are the parents of wanda?
Lotariio 3 years ago
wanda is turn into a kid at the end of SOTC
lovethewow 3 years ago
Wander started the lineage of horned boys. ICO is one of his descendants, and for that reson people think he is cursed. That's the reason they concealed him inside the castle.
dioseolo 3 years ago
Wanderer was the ancestor of Ico :)
MeleeMasterMario 3 years ago
Nah not confirmed but we think so
jonoy52 3 years ago
Actually it was by Fumito Ueda, the game's director and lead designer.

This game stinks, and so does Okami, so I don't know what you're all on about.

XeutonMojukai 3 years ago 8
I totally agree. ICO was the second game I bought for my PS2 (GTA III was the first), and ICO left me in awe. I still have the game and the guide to this day. I usually trade games in once I'm done with them, but ICO, SotC, and Okami I'll never part with. Masterpieces, for sure!
GuzzyVision 3 years ago 2
I love this song! But it's nowhere to be found! Dx Anyone know where I can download it? =/
XUpWeGoX 3 years ago
Id say that this game and SOTC were the best games for PS2.
Erikwdjr 3 years ago 5
I think you need to include Okami in that list, but I agree wholeheartedly.
XeutonMojukai 3 years ago 3
One of the many underrated video games that leaves 'footprints' after you play it. I just wished more games held such beauty in both design and story. I honestly believe, for me, that because it kept with it's original voices and language, the game maintained most of its charm. A beautiful story of a boy and girl finding common ground and depending on each other for survival. The game still rips my heart out with the story. Thank you for the post.

SpikySpede 3 years ago
you had GOOD feelings? I thought I was gonna cry! i couldn't believe the end was a dream. and so short. >:
ah well, there's always shadow of the colossus.
kalasad 3 years ago
A dream? Who said that? That's only a theory.
On GameSpot forums under ICO there is this great dude who did a who disambiguation on ICO, you should read it.
The ending was awesome b/c it was real
kanancom 3 years ago
eh? I read that the creators themselves said it was a dream.
let me find it...
oh, and link please? :>
kalasad 3 years ago
"Fumito Ueda's own interpretation of ICO's ending is that Ico is dreaming of meeting Yorda once again."
ok, so it's an /interpretation/, but remember when he 'theorized' that SOTC was the prequel to Ico and that's just what he though? yeah, and later he said it was true...
but whatever. :] Ico is an awesome game!
kalasad 3 years ago
Ueda wants players to interpret the ending/story for themselves and that there is no real cannon. Or at least that's what he said.
railenmiles 3 years ago 3
So it /was/ a dream? T_T I thought it was real all this time and that when the castle dead the blackness that took Yorda died then revert to normal.
Thanks for sharing. I'm glad I new after I played the game. My roommates would have thought I was weird if they saw me crying over a video game. >.>;
bittertea 3 years ago
No...it wasn't a dream. I'm not sure what gave you that idea. Yorda escaped and ended up on the beach with Ico.
Megaritz 3 years ago
yorda is not dead yet. there will be a sequel. ( not sotc ) for the ps3.
masterkill107 3 years ago
The creator said he is going to create something fresh.

I miss this game! One of the best titles of PS2 yet only too few know bout this game. I wish I could play this one again T T
xenogear27lacan 3 years ago
This game's ending is beautiful. It was a really big pay off for playing. I found the game for cheap. I still don't think it sells for much if you get it from a brick and mortar store(maybe online too). do a search on gamestop to see if a near one has a copy(I think I bought mines for 6-10 bucks).
GadGades 3 years ago 2
awesome game! but what does yorda say on the beach when she wakes up? is it japanese?
craaale 4 years ago
No one knows what she said, it was in her own language. Ueda left it un-subbed on purpose so people could interpret it they way they wanted to
