Shoppers: TomTom's no longer offer FM transmitting of voice instruction but TomTom & its retailers continue to FALSELY ADVERTISE the feature.
Existing TomTom users: if you update firmware above 8.01 you LOSE the feature also. TomTom has disabled this feature for the entire world. Garmin, took a much more logical approach & only disabled it in 2 European countries that ban FM tranmission.
BUY THE GARMIN - better maps and no tricky updates or false advertising.
Hi all, I work for TomTom in Netherlands. We have an in-flight mode to make devices LEGAL to use in aircraft which disables GPS. However it is scientific belief that GPS chips can in NO WAY damage or affect plane systems...It is complete nonsense and over-caution by the aircraft companies.
Yup but how do i put this... American Airlines are run by very stupid people... and equally stupid european people copy these very stupid people :p. You are right the GPS receiver isn't harmful in any way as i commented.
Thanks sleek, I agree. The BT was switched off so there is no radiation whatsoever. This is why people like psvania just come over with a generalised view that anything electronic carried by a passenger will cause the plane to crash duhhhhh
It honestly wouldn't have mattered anyway. On any given flight there are multiple people who have forgotten or neglected to turn their phones or any other device with BT off.
I, too, have used my TomTom on a flight and I think my maximum speed that I saw coming back from Frankfurt to Dulles was ~540mph. I didn't have it on for more than 5 minutes at a time though.
Next time I'll make a 3 hour recording just for you !!

It shows the speed at the beginning. 588mph.

Couldn't you get a speed read-out on the TomTom?

It was a Boeing 757 from Boston to Manchester and was filmed just before flying over Ireland.

Why do you need to disable the GPS if it is simply a receiver? It does not transmit anything like cellular phones or satellite phones.
A GPS receiver is as harmful as your video camera.

Fero1984 3 years ago
It wouldnt let me do that as it kept on trying to find a road, and kept reloading itself over and over, so I just put it in normal view mode.
