  • Thanks for this video! Been there done that ;-) 3/14th ACR Bad Hersfeld thedeitz . com

  • Dad was stationed at Fulda in the 1950s while in the Cav. 7/14, I believe.

  • C-Troop 3/12 Cav. 72-74 :)

  • I served there. Thanks for the memories.

  • (2) did the same thing. LOTS of US&BGS on the ground saw the GAK and Russians watching with binocs and cameras. They hovered over 3 or 4 places and kept doing that. By the end, there were 3-4 trucks on the east side & at least 12 commies watching-half taking pictures. The commies had a shit fit. (PM me your email and I'll tell you what we found out after reunification.)

  • Miatamama thanks very much for your comment I appreciate it

  • Markoatmac thank you for your comment I am so glad that you stayed so strong on the other side. I used to wonder alot about how people lived under the Communist rule. Your country is beautiful and I am proud to have lived and served in Germany. I hope to go back for a visit someday

  • Thanks for your your service TheDaninky, thomm1961 and owings64. It thrills me to see "real people" who served at Point Alpha leave comments!

  • Ah the memories, I served in Fulda with the Blackhorse 1980-1989, Anvil Troop. 1/11th ACR. I spent many weeks at Point Alpha, Wooden Tower, Reaction Force, Ops Center, Patrols, etc. Thanks for the video.

  • I was there in the old wooden tower 79-81 it was a great time in my life. People don't realize what a sacrifice we made, while my friends were back home taking it easy we were freezing our asses off protecting the free world. C-Troop 1/11th ACR

  • @thomm1961 thanks for your service there. I have been there a few weeks ago. I am from East Germany and was a teenager that time. Your service there and in Berlin gave us hope on the other side too, you showed the communist regime where their sphere of control ended. Thank you all brave US GI's!

  • I can remember more than a few nights in that tower, but more often than not we were deployed along the border to set up an LP (listening post). Pulled a few all nighters with the boys of Cold Steel. I am so glad that this small place still remains to mark our commitment to Freedom. Thank you to all my fellow Troopers and our German hosts who were so very gracious. Allons!!

  • My gratitude again goes out to all that served at Point Alpha, and of course around the world serving today. I am in the Navy Reserves and have done my time in deployments so far in Kuwait and LRMC Germany .

Thanks for your insightful comments bigal1940, azthundercloud, tangocharlie11, jtsftwre,timeclock200 and wickerman66645.

I appreciate your comments---it makes this video as well as Point Alpha come alive with your personal revelations!

  • @miatamama08 Thank you! I was one of them from 1981 to 1983. This song always brings me back to the protests. And me having to drive through them while people hadcuffed themselves to my car trying to stop me from getting to work. A dark time in my life. RBB

  • Was stationed at the 616th AC&W radar site on a 3,100 ft hill not far from Fulda's 1st Calvery Div 1960 to 1963. Fulda gap was the place where enemy would thrust if it ever came to a hot war. Only passable plain between Hunsruck and Rhoen mountains. Thank God peace prevailed and finally

all of Germany was reunified. We would have been expendable for sure, our

strength at the time was only 100 in our squadron with only small arms .

  • went there in 79 when i was at ramstein. spooky then and i just went there to walk across the border 2 weeks ago. made the hair on the back of my neck stand up

  • 77 to 79 you new guys had it easy. the old wooden tower was hell.

  • @tangocharlie11 I wouldn't know more than how cold it gets and how miserable the winters are sometimes, I spent many nights in tents during training in the middle of winter, but tower guard has to top my worst by far, Now Im dying of the heat in Iraq, go figure...

  • @dynamic21150 Thank you for your service dynamic, That tower actually had heat but the 24 OPs were tough. I retired in 2003 before my Guard unit was tasked to go. I was a tanker and they got rid of the tanks so I was was done, 27 years was enough.

  • 4:21 part of the big get together was kicked off right in that blue building that arches up to a semi A-frame type deal. good video!

  • I can't say I did much at Point Alpha besides US Army color guard for General B.B. Bell back in 2005 for the German/American get together they have to commemorate their years working together. but it is quite the place.

  • I was with the 1/81 FA Pershing I's & Pershing II's

Not a fun time then and not a fun time now for me.

  • You were a part of history! Thank you for your service.

I am assumeing you were on the German/American side of the wall?

  • yes it was, i was stationed there in 1983, very busy.

  • i was there too,86 87 light horse recon.

  • @wickerman66645 Do you remember hearing about a Huey from Sickles that hung an old coffee can out the door with a fly rod and lowered then raised it? Then they went about 50 meters and did it again?

  • @DrMotorDude No i dont recall that sorry.

  • @wickerman66645 In '88 one flew up to OP-A in the north corner overlooking the both towers. The crew chief had gotten a new hand made fly rod in from the States for his B-day-bragged about it-loved it. A WO2 had the idea of "F-ing with the commies" so he got a giant coffee can from a chow hall and spray painted it black, put some small rocks in. They hovered 100' or so and he told the crew chief to lower the can 50', hold 10 secs. and bring it back in. They 50m south over the field and ....
