I'm a percussion student in Marietta, Georgia, and I got the opportunity to PLAY this exact drum this morninng at an accessory percussion clinic. The drum was owned by John Lawless!
yeah it does remind me of a Cajon... But much deeper and with more tone... I keep kind of giggling though because this guys face looks A LOT like Shaq, and it makes me giggle picturing shaq rocking out on one of these... And then I picture him rapping while doing it... puts a big smile on my face.
Why is it that the diversity of instruments in Africa is never explored or portrayed. All we ever see are hand drums with the occasional flute. I have never heard of this drum & had I saw it would not have placed it in Africa (I'm a product of my ignorant environment). Thanks africanbushdoctor, as I am a person who is desperate to connect with the customs & music of the family that I was taken from, your videos have enlightened me so much. PLEASE, keep posting.
