I agree on the architecture, if that's what you'd call it. Bruckner, although he uses a similar tonal language to Mahler, really has very little in common with him. It's a composition built of single instants, not of a line of phrase.
This part reminds me the 4th movement of Bruckner's 4th romantic symphony. Great pity this 1st movement of the 9th is nowhere to find on youtube though it is one of the best one.
Not really. A phrase contains.. well... phrasing. Its like saying a view of one square inch of the Golden Gate Bridge conveys the totality of its architecture.
The comment by Sbuzzlghettona is interesting. I knew that Furtwengler conducted the orchestra but I didn't know he also directed the bombing.
yes it is possible to see that one of Bruckner's caracteristic of his composition is how clean, and clearly he articulates each frase, the legato and the sound should be pure, as some people call it Architecture. All the great conductors agree in that aspect the only one do not agree is Bernstein and he conducted it in the same histerical way than he conduct some Mahler Symphonies.Mahler may be that way but not Bruckner
just one min????? come on this is the coveted first movement of the symphony. can someone pleaseeee upload the full version (into parts of course) of this or even better karajan's version. Thanks
I was lucky enough to hear the same symphony, with the same orchestra in the same music hall, but with an other conductor: the great Von Karajan himself. It´s about 20 years ago, but I remember it like it was yesterday, fantastic!
incredible!! I have nver heard the big climax of the first movement of bruckner's 9th dones like this.
But could Bernstein get the stillness, the mystery, the awesome presence of God Almighty?
If not, then in my opinon he did not understand Bruckner where Celibidache did

Bernstein should have stuck to Mahler only. There's no sense of architecture here.

it always surprises me how someone like you can "sense the architecture" from a mere 1 minute clip.

There's architecture in one phrase.

Vienna Philly has always been a favorite orchestra of mine. They produce amazing Hornists. God I wish I could get a hold of a vienna horn... haha.
