Chris Cornell and Layne Staley, two of the greatest singers in rock, at the very least... of the 90's. Cobain wasn't bad but not on the same level as these guys, he was just a fantastic songwriter.
Any true fan of Soundgarden knows that Chris Cornell's best vocal work is either from the song Birth Ritual (Yes he can sing it live) or Beyond The Wheel.
Hm, maybe I'm alone in this but the scream he pulls off best and which impresses me most is the one from the intro to Power Trip from the Louder Than Love album. Correct me if I'm wrong about this, but I don't think he ever goes that high again.
Maybe I'm alone in thinking this but for me there's no question about what scream impresses me of Cornell's; The intro to Power Trip from the Louder than Love album. That high note he strikes, plus the wailing that follows with such control and strength. Incomparable with any other.
havent finished watching but the scream on "cochise" should be on there am i right its like a 15 second scream thus far i think jesus christ pose wins hands down
Temple of the Dog is one of my favorite records ever. Too bad I had to wait for the first Audioslave to get another fix but it pales in comparison. All other Audisoslave was just so uninspired.
alot of the grunge music took sides, some went with a more punk sound like nirvana or pearl jam, and some took more to the metal side like soundgarden or alice in chains
Yeah, he's lost quite a bit of it... But maybe it will come back when the reunited SG releases some more stuff. (Which I'm on the edge of my seat for!)
@mrwrangler92 showing your age there ;) ......... there are a few with better developed voices and range ......... one of the greatest "living" for sure !
@MultiSnotface Negative. From practicing these the only way I can do it is taking it into a head voice and layering it with some rasp/heat. Obviously doesn't sound like Chris but it's getting there. If you're a singer and you want to learn it, practice vocal scales up in the female range and you'll see it helps a lot.
@klongs yer i can get this high but i think its falsetto maybe grabbing a bit of chest with it as i tense my throat ever so slightly, i think head is similar, but who knows what the cords are doing as we cant see them,
I see debates over CC's vocal range from heldentenor to bass, I just think he covers all those ranges, since some music teacher I asked told me he had 4 full octaves voice coverage through different songs he played. This, of course, in early career, since now he somehow lost deepest and highest . However , still a badass, despite bad company of that afro gansta shit music maker Timbafuckinland
oi everyone, cc is a heldentenor and not a baritone. a heldentenor is pretty much a baritone with a high extention and thats what cc has. he extended both ends of what a heldentenor is supposed to be capable of though, which is why he is the best ever, cause he didnt have any training. he wax born to do this.
the noise of a heldentenor is strange and sureal, it is the weightiest voice and sounds amazing. the best example of ccs natural voice would be the a cappella bit at the end of reach down.
actually he's a baritone. which is why so many people are mesmerised that he sings most of the time in a higher range because its that uncommon and such a gift
Chris is a tenor everybody. There is no way he is a baritone just listen to how he sings his low notes. also it's near impossible for a baritone to hit those high notes like that.
not true, it doesn't matter whether you're a baritone, tenor etc that doesn't affect your range, I believe Chris is a bass, listen to the scream at the end of Jesus Christ Pose - piercing heights all the way down to gutteral lows, the low notes he hits - very low, but still powerful and not like vocal fry, it sounds comfortable and I do not believe a tenor would sound as comfortable as that, it would sound forced, he'snjust got such a massive range it's hard to tell sometimes,
i think the difference between eddie and chris is that eddie is a bass-baritone and chris is a high-baritone. eddie just has a naturally much deeper, heavier voice and seems to be much more comfortable with his not-so-high register. chris on the other hand, took a lot of advantage of the high notes, and dam, it was awesome.
currently, chris's voice is shot cuz of smoking and such so i think him and eddie hav the same range.. D2-D5. dam, i wish i cud hit that A5 that chris used to be able to hit
Could it be a that he is missing his youthfull anger to even want to hit these notes?
He is much more mellow then he used to be.
I know that when I was younger I iht higher notes much easier then now, but I still can, just have to concentrate more. I miss the 'inocense' of my youth.
dude all over youtube, theres tons of videos of chris performing with soundgarden and videos of him performin in his solo career. i will admit, im often surprised at how much range he still has, but it's just not as powerful as it used to be.
listen to him singing smokestack lightning live back in the early 90s, especially that incredibly high note at the end. theres no way he can duplicate that again !!!! nevertheless, im still a huge fan of chris and support him even with his new album
Slaves and Bulldozers is on the second video in this series and I'm making a new video that might have Limo Wreck on it, but I'm still debating on that because most of Limo Wreck Chris is singing very straight forward, he really only kicks it in during the chorus and towards of the end of the song.
what kind of a sentence is that?Well at least I know it was posted by a moron who knows zero about soul and moving sounds.I think your corn is waiting to be husked.Go on with your inbred self.
best voice of all of the grunge singers...how could you not have "Hands All Over" in here though? that song has the best vocals of any grunge song period IMO
yeah this effect is really cool, he achieves this hitting his throat with the side of his hand and changing the pitch of his voice, That's an unnusual and very interesting technique
People should just stop the debate on Cornell vs Vedder. Comparing them is like saying it feels better to get your left nut sucked than the right. Both are equally talented, future hall of fame musicians who have influenced a countless number of solo artists and bands.
you chaps should check out danny bowles of thunder they got some great vids on you tube danny vocals are molten mostlyhigh throat no squeeling may ihumbly suggest love yr more then rock n roll chris and danny's got simelar tone
now come on. Eddie is great. I personally love Pearl Jam more than Soundgarden but i have to admit. Eddie's voice sounds like an amateur to Chris' one
Who said Eddie Vedder? Did you listen to the first 20 seconds of this video and compared how bad Eddie sounds next to Cornell? I am a big PJ fan but there is no comparison. Axl Rose in his prime was close but there's still no comparison.
Well, his screams are better, but as an all around vocalist plant is better. Its hard to choose cause they are my two faves, but plant is an all around better vocalist and chris owns the screams.
For me in the 70's & 80's I totally would have agreed with you.But sadly Plant lost his intense and immense vocal abilities.Early 90's I went to see him again, I was so saddened for him and myself, knowing I'de never hear those amazing riff like animalistic, high yet masculine vocals ever again.
Plant had it,sadly he lost it late 80's.I thought none will ever sing as good or better. Then I heard a voice that blew my mind, with fitting back up.When it was over I heard the jockey say"I am the Highway" Audioslave. From that day I was engrossed in all of CC's works through the years.None can touch the musical plains he brings me to.He creates every aspect of what pours out of him and his chosen backup group. If there was a mythical god of heart and soul altering ability it is CC MY Grunge God !
I'm looking for a video I watched on Youtube once which was a clip of Say Hello 2 Heaven (I think), and whoever made the video was playing on a piano in sync with Chris' high notes. The video ended with the text "Chris Cornell is a freak". Anyone seen this? Thanks
The thing I love about Cornell's screams are that they're so powerful, and he really sounds like a man doing them.
There are high screams by other vocalists, who still sound masculine, but not like Cornell, who's screams sound like many others' mid-range in terms of "manly" quality.
yeah its his technique. He keeps his mouth in a more closed position and doesn't let his mouth stretch too far out because that produces a very bright sound. He gets a very dark round sound even on wailing notes by keeping the tongue back and the mouth relatively closed. Especially in his later years!
It also helps that he's a bass-baritione, so his natural (speaking) voice is pretty low.
I would not be a singer today if it were not for this man. Amazing.
Thanks for this explanation! I'd also noticed that he does this, and figured it had something to do with breath control/voice control. Thanks for the illumination.
hungerstrike E5, say hello F#5 down to sustained E5, four walled highest is a F5, loud love Eb5, jesus G#5!, gun great F5 down to E5, face poluttion C#5 a bit anticlimatic after the preceeding screams.
Nice video man the only song missing here is his highest ever which is Smokestack Lightning, I can send you the song if you want. Other than that cool video man!!
Not to mention "Beyond the Wheel", "I awake", "Reach Down", "Room a Thousand Years Wide", "Cold Bitch", "Let Me Drown" , and my personal favorite, "Call Me a Dog"--which soars up to a wail as the guitar and backing vocals bend downward. Gut-wrenching! Good vid though, and you're right of course about Smokestack Lightning.
I don't understand the point of arguing. They are all amazing singers and Grunge is probably the best thing that ever happened to music.

Thanks for this explanation! I'd also noticed that he does this, and figured it had something to do with breath control/voice control. Thanks for the illumination.
And, yes, he is amazing.

Cool stuff, although high notes would be a better description. He's actually singing the notes not just screaming.
