Both the Soviet Union and China got the bomb, not by independent research on their own, but through atomic spies. First the famous Soviet spies, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, sold key secrets and paid with their lives. China likely drew on their own spies in the Soviet Union in the early 1950s. It was the United States scientific manpower that did the research and development to produce the atomic bomb, and then the hydrogen bomb. I feel no pride in this fact, but it needs to be pointed out.

In Rocketry, yes. While the Germans were also working hard making the first atom bomb, they were still years away in 1945. German scientist were captured and repatriated in the U.S., and the Soviet Union. I think we got the smartest ones and they contributed greatly to American Knowledge.

@TheKolbeg I stand corrected. Upon further research I find the many of the top minds; Szilard, Fermi, and Teller, were all political refugees who came to work here in the United States. It was their collective hope that their knowledge would not be used for warfare. A bitter irony, but Teller seemed to have no problem uncorking the nuclear genie and promoting the Hydrogen bomb in 1950.

I also need to point out that the "so called American" Scientists were mainly Europeans (Jewish, Italian, etc.), who fled their war-torn countries. In that sense, if you do want to undermine the achievements of Chinese and Russian scientists, I feel better if you mention that they 'copied' Europeans rather than Americans. I also feel no pride in this fact, but it needs to be pointed out.
