CI should be in Cosmetic section because being deaf is not deadly disease. Just another culture and language group. just a random thought being thrown down on the text....
I like your ideas. Once Deaf Californians accomplish their goals on AB2072, they will brainstorm a lot more of your ideas. They have become a model for other states to start rolling up their sleeves.
Agreed, Adam. For a while, Sweden had approx 30 years of utopia, where everybody, from the government and on, took up the responsibility of ensuring that parents of newborn Deaf are given opportunities (at no cost) to attend SSL classes, be assigned a Deaf "social worker", etc. etc.- and for 30 years, all Swedish Deaf schools received Deaf children on grade level when they entered 1st grade. We can make that happen here, starting with California! :) Thanks, Adam.
You're right. Personally, I think the government ought to pay for parents to get ASL lessons. I know there are some free classes available to parents of deaf children, depending on where you live and what resources are around. These resources and other inexpensive options should be offered to parents--and somehow, some way, in addition, a "welcome committee" of Deaf adults from the local Deaf community to talk to. I know that sounds unrealistic, but imagine it.
Excellent idea and solutions. I am sure Deaf Californians will brainstorm many ideas to provide parents equal access to ASL. VP, laptop webcam great idea!
