I have to say, alot of the comments on this video upset me, Comparing Red Hat 9 to Ubuntu (newer) and Fedora (the exact same thing as RHL) is kinda moot, Red Hat Linux 9 was the last free distribution offered by red hat. The red hat community saw this and worked to create a new free RHL distrobution to allow people to still get the look, feel and capabilities of Red Hat without having to pay. Look at Fedora Core 1 and you will see its the exact same as this distro. Just released 5 months later
@DarkMastaC Fedora is NOT exact same thing as RHL, nor it is its successor, but a playground for its development. That means that Fedora will always live on the bleeding edge of development without a truly stable and long term supported version. CentOS and ScientificLinux are the RH clones you have in mind.

I can see my comment was grossly misunderstood. I know what Linux is good for. A lean, high performance, high capacity, flexible, customizable operating system that can run from the smallest embedded device to the top 10 supercomputers. That's where the community should focus. Not on playing catchup with Windows or Mac GUIs. That is what I found silly. I prefer Linux without a GUI or the lightest, functional one I can find.
Ok, so after 16 years redhat succeeded in making linux look like windows95?? really? i am not an MS fan and actually use many linux distros for work, but this is silly. is there an alternate world out there where making linux execute .EXE processes is nirvana ?
@jppputube Linux will never run .exe files because of the different architecture it has compared to windows. Linux focuses a lot more on the performance of the system, which is why it runs most servers. On the other hand, Windows focuses a lot more on the GUI of the operating system, because this is what the general public can best relate to. The down side to this is that Windows has its infamous "blue screen of death" and slow performance.
@maw88ify its more of a OS then any other Linux Distros and what i mean by that its user friendly like you dont need to mess around with it to get some of your hardware and no im not a fan of red hat its bullocks why pay for something thats free? if i had to pay i'd rather go buy MacOSx but putting that aside Fedora is the best Linux Distro no matter what anyone says its always going to be the best Mint sucks its just a remake of Ubuntu Suse is gay cause it is and its a Os for Morons
yea i agree with you. fedora is definitely the best distro. linux mint is for people who cant let go of windows, which isn't that the reason they switched to linux in the first place? and i cant STAND suse. its just such a dumb project. it took 5min to boot suse and about 15 sec for fedora to boot (might be less then that) :D
if only redhat released a Red Hat 10.0 Linux lol Fedora would be in trouble then lol but yes Fedora is the bes tlinux OS so far... unbuntu is 2nd IMO Fedora 12 is just bad ass !!!
i've tried all the linux distros and ubuntu is by far the best.....and most of the people knows it. So what i am trying to say is stop talking crap without trying all of em.
i don't know what you mean but since you are trying to say i don't know what im talking about let me correct what your saying, people tend to use ubuntu because there noobs? simple as that, they prefer ubuntu because if they got handed a REAL linux os they would crap in their pants because they would be so confused, people also use ubuntu because it's as simple as windows notice why i said noob before!, if you want windows that badly then go back to it; lol
@wakunahum nono it wasn't meant to sound like that, what i meant was that fedora was more of a work distro and ubuntu was for play, ubuntu is the 3rd most used OS after windows & mac so i can never hate on it :)
Installing and running programs on Linux is like booking a flight to Hawaii, but having to print the tickets yourself, building the airplane, fueling the airplane, and then flying it to Hawaii yourself.....crashing all the way.
How much is frustration and jumping through hoops over the 3 - 5 year lifespan of an OS period actually worth? It very well might be worth the price of a Windows installation.
@reivenlocke You can use something like synaptic or other installation tools. You type the name of a software, check a box, hit apply, and watch it install. It's very easy. It's just as easy as downloading an EXE, finding the folder destination, then double clicking. It's all EASY regardless of what operating system you are using.
@wakunahum Sorry, I lost you after the 6 word "synaptic". It would be easy if linux understands that a .exe is a installer. If linux understands how to open a jpeg, then why should it not understand a installer?
@hasegawamiki so, does linux understand .exe? I asked first dumbnuts. Why should a multi-trillion dollar corporation support .dpkg of a (free unpopular unuser friendly) OS?
@dirtmax64 It does read installers... .RPM, .DEB, .SH, all installers.
Linux can read .exe files, by the way- but doesn't have native support for it.
If Linux were more like Windows and supported all .exe files, that would NOT be good, because than it would have all of the malware- like "pickyantivirus" said.
@Palmer640 I typed installer (referring to exe, not installers rpm,deb,sh)....so you agree that it doesn't have native support for it, so it doesn't read .exe out of the box. nobody will get malware if they didn't go to shady websites. also linux doesn't have much malware because the people who make malware won't target unpopular OS. PS I use ubuntu all the time, but will NEVER recommend it to a friend or anyone to go thru hell
@wakunahum It's less because it's incredibly over rated.
The point of Linux is not to make it hard to use, it's supposed to be "open" and let you have more control over your desktop environment... making everything automatic is going to make it more like MAC [MAC is Unix based also, but it's almost completely closed and expensive]- just the opposite of being more open and having more control.
I suggest learning how to actually use Linux, almost any other distro is better than Ubuntu.
@wakunahum You can't generalize such a broad topic. Linux allows you to customize things and do things faster than on Windows, it's just hard for the new users with all their point and clicky.
@wakunahum It's a more advanced operating systems... if you jus simply want internet purposes face book youtube etc. I recomend windows. More programers use this kind of stuff or advanced computer nerds... Hate to say the word but hackers too. I mean its open source not closed source therefore it's changed and can be minipulated to your own use. If you want you could config it to ur own will just make sure you're program friendly. and Ubuntu is ok. It has an annoying side bar and looks like mac
@SyphonFilterCombatOp I'm pretty sure you can't call someone else a noob, and follow it up with Ubuntu is best. Run Debain, not it's red headed stepchild
I've used a lot of Linux debian, ubuntu, Fedora, moonos, mint, and they all look almost the same with the same programs so what make Red Hat any better than debian, ubuntu or Fedora.
@maw88ify The only difference is that Red Hat has been around longer then the later distros. The other ones simply try to make things more user friendly. I remember Ubuntu didn't have out of the box Mp3 support until MUCH later, not to mention the deb installer. So its gotten better for those with less knowledge on how to use Linux. Such as myself.

Why don't you just go for it? Back-up, then just install the OS onto the computer fully if you don't know how to partition- if you don't like, re-install Linux :). And of course, the easier way is Virtual Box(Youtube it).

@FaithFullMemory How is Ubuntu and less Linux than another distribution of Linux?
Is the point of the Linux desktop to make it difficult on the users so that everyone ends up hating their experience?
Is the point of using Linux to make it hard to use?
It's a computer. It's supposed to automate tasks for you and not make you do everything by hand.

I was doing it for his own good, if he doesn't know how to install Linux then he really doesn't need to. I was saving him quite a bit of trouble, and probably money.

I'm not too big a fan of Ubuntu on desktops, but that's probably because I'm more used to the KDE Desktop Environment. openSUSE FTW!!
