3. it is important for filipino youth today to know the 1986 people power, not just to pass history subject, but more importantly, to acknowledge his/her role in the Philippine society and be an active agent of change to this seemingly marshal law-like era in the Philippines. (or should i say NAGPAPANGGAP-na-hindi-Marshal-Law-pero-Marshal-Law-naman-talaga era)
personalities, ninoy ramos enrile cory etc. only gave faces to these people and the masses that were mobilized. that's how "history" sees people power. ironically, they[personalities] really did not give justice to the millions of filipinos who truly embodied the spirit of the people power. these personalities took advantage of the people power to gain political control over the Philippines, and even now, it is used to for the same purpose, i.e. noynoy used his parents' images for the 2010 elec.
2. the 1986 people power did not happen because noynoy was killed or because the military withdrawn support to then president marcos. it happened because there were organized filipinos who saw the need to remove marcos from the post because of the fascism and the economical programs he espoused which caused oppression and greater poverty to the largest number of masses. these people saw that only through the unity of the masses can they overthrow such power.
"A revolution (from the Latin revolutio, "a turn around") is a fundamental change in power or organizational structures that takes place in a relatively short period of time."
only the personalities were changed, but even these personalities belong to the same upper societal class with the same interest they're taking care of. not the system. from dictatorship to democracy? not really.
@XrayLancer14 excuse me, i do believe you're old enough to know what is right and what is wrong. INSULTING, BASHING, AND TALKING LIKE BIG doesn't give any prestige to you..

pano sila nakapasa sa mga subjects? USE YOUR COCONUT kasi po more likely history subject lang ang may concern sa edsa revolution.AT Hindi lamang umiikot ang history subject sa edsa revolution para maging dahilan ng pagkabagsak. ikaw anong alam mo? pumuna sa pagkukulang nang iba na parang ang galing galing m? umabot sila sa antas na yan kasi hnd lang sa edsa umiikot ang pag-aaral! don't hate.
I am aware that the people in the video are ignorant about EDSA revolution and it's not healty for them as a filipino .BUT heck, most of the People WHO post COMMENTS HERE are the worst!
so do you guys think you're a better filipino than the people in the video?
anong klaseng mga pinoy kayo? imbis na tulungan eh lalo nyo pang binababa ang kapwa nyo? kung mag bash pa kayo like you guys know everything.
@bereadybitch will you please re-check your grammar first before posting your comment?
I suggest that the name "EDSA Revolution" or "1986 People Power" is something problematic. For example, there are more romanticized names like Jasmine Revolution, French Revolution. Siguro dapat pinili nating tawagin ito na "The Filipino Revolution of 1986" or "Filipino People Power" para mas na-embed sa culture natin iyong halaga niya, kaysa ipinangalan after ng isang malaking daanan, sa vague term like people power, o sa isang date/year. Mas makaka-identify lahat sa "Filipino".
We could not totally blame the youth for their ignorance of history. The way they are taught must be our concern. Many educators themselves are not to abreast with history along with the parents and guardians of these youth. Certainly, its a wake up all for those who treasure EDSA very much along with the different events that have shaped our country.
Filipino's worth dying for? BULLLSSHIIITTT!!! More than Math and Sciences ang pinaka-importante na subject ay history. Nakakahiya kayo!!!
Gusto ko tong mga taong to n wlang alam sa edsa tama lng n d alam yan alanmn silbe dyn ngcmula mghirap pinas ng mging presidente yang hinayupak n cory bopols aquino n yan.. Me bonus pa presidente n rin ung anak nya n bopols rin hahaha.. Kaya alan tlgang pagasa pinas..
@gicoleco: we should not think alone na ang educational system yung problema sa bansa.. nasa studyante parin ang problema. if hindi nila titnitreasure ang EDSA People Power..nakakalungkot lang kasi daming kabataan na ngayon ang hindi alam ang tunay na kahulugan ng EDSA people power..tsk2..
@frapplenz We should try to look deeper into the problem. It's too easy to blame the students, or the youth in its entirety, because they are the result of what the society has gone through for the past years. It's not just EDSA; I'm talking about the Filipino culture per se. The country is in a continuous struggle in learning its identity since the Spaniards colonized the country. That's why proper EDUCATION is the only way to resolve this. It starts at what we learn at school.
and WhoTheHell is Tomas Diaz?!? mangamote ka nalng bata. yayaman ka jan
i couldnt have been any sadder by this vid. the youth seems more and more nonchalant of our history. in which it should be the foundation towards true nationalism
EDSA 1986 could've been the foundation event of the Filipino people, much like the Exodus for the Israelites or the French Revolution of the French. If those born a few years after the momentous events in EDSA do not remember or at least understand the importance of that, the Philippines is in real trouble. We take our history for granted. As a result, we do not have a sense of identity and nationhood. That's why Filipinos don't care about fellow Filipinos and the country itself.
@babbleboyquito tulad ng mga examples mo, sana naging madugo na lang ang edsa para mag naging malaki ang epekto sa tao... sabi nga sa 300, 'freedom itself is not free. it comes with the highest cost. the cost of blood''
@marx0089 you know what, I agree with you. I and Philippine history in general. To paraphrase one of the American founders (I think it was Jefferson? not sure), the foundations of the nation are strengthened by the blood of the patriots as mortar.
Kapag may dugo, may sugat. Kapag may sugat, may hapdi. Kapag may hapdi, mas may talab at mas hindi malilimutan.
@babbleboyquito A lot of blood was spilled during those time. Maybe not during the EDSA Revolution itself but from the start of Martial Law, there were executions and torture. So, to say that no blood or lives were spilled or lost, is untrue. As you know, Gen. Fabian Ver requested from Pres. Marcos, in front of Local and International Press to shoot at demonstrators on the 25th of Feb 1986. Maybe Pres. Marcos denied his request because it was done publicly.
@wisekingjohn I was just referring to the EDSA Revolution itself.:) True, there were a lot of unexplained disappearances and deaths as well as tortures during the entire period of Martial Law. Martial Law was indeed a very painful sting on the Filipino nation. Maybe the bloodlessness of the EDSA Revolution somehow desensitized that sting? I'm pretty sure that those in the video know very little of what really transpired during Martial Law. Maybe this ignorance is also a result of desensitization
@jipohipolito tama ka! lintik na mga to puro kalandian at kabobohan lang alam! i was born in dec 1985! and i am proud to say that i have intensive knowledge in what happen on Feb 1986.
(and i did not have a chance to go on college)
and all i can say to this (dumbass, stupid) students......
WAG NA LANG KAYO MAG ARAL! PUTANG INAYO NAKAKAHIYA KAYO!
Panoorin niyo po yung babae sa 3:19 - kailangan pa raw niya ng 'further study' pero she still asserts that she knows A LOT about how our government works and the recent political history of our country. NAKAKASUKA naman! EH BAKIT WALA SIYANG ALAM SA EDSA REVOLUTION?!
GRABE naman 'to!
Nakakahiya! (BTW, the guy @ 4:05 is the only one who knows his history)
@stompboxer as cruel as it sounds, but if it is for the greater good, then a few sacrifices would deem nothing. Pour out all the hate that you want, it still won't change the fact that what was done resulted to what you see right now. The educated and talented people go abroad, for they know that there's not much future left for the old country. Sadly, money talks.
@reiyu013 No hate. But you have just put on record that you are pro-despotism. Which, as we all know has never ever brought economic stability to any country.
Don't say "Singapore" because Lee Kuan Yew never dared to cross the line that Marcos did. And Lee actually was on record about Marcos ending up as a crook.
@stompboxer and one more thing, I'm not pro-despotism, but if people were to abide laws easily, such actions would not be required. It's more of an if-then-else statement. after marcos implemented the martial law and the curfew, crime rates plunged to almost nil. my elders would say that it was the most peaceful time ever in their lives. every centavo was worth a lot, i don't know where you pulled off your words that the economy was bad, my citations says otherwise.
@reiyu013 Well I don't know where you pulled off *yours*. It's appalling.
Wait wait wait. Political dissension is law-breaking? Political protest is law-breaking? And their actions are on the same level as drug-dealing? Wow. WOW.
@reiyu013 Just because your apathetic relatives never experienced any troubles doesn't mean there was NONE. My elders didn't experience anything either, but being close to Marcos they KNEW what he was up to.
@stompboxer never did i hear of "innocents" being oppressed in the articles that i read during martial law. all i've stumbled upon are activists, extremists, protesters, politicians, drug dealers, and criminals. i might be wrong, but from the words of my elders, nothing bad happened to those who have done nothing wrong.
@stompboxer the crash began during 1984, where government officials REFUSED to cooperate with the regiment. the years prior to that were all positive, in fact booming. I pulled out my charts from the International Monetary Fund website. what about you?
oh please, FM's ways are way too soft compared against Fidel Castro's, and Cuba is doing way better than the Philippines as we speak.
Oh please, you just got that from the IMF website??? Those are the only charts you have? Economy is much more intricate than that! I got mine from the DoF archives. Long ago.
@stompboxer it's true that my family had the good end of the martial law. they lived their lives most peaceful during those time, no reason for them to oppose the government. monetary value was great as per the elderly, structures were fixed, parks were clean, crime rate minimal to nil, corruption wasn't bad compared to now. if the economy stood steady as when it was before, there would be no reason for us to move out. last two cents: order can NEVER be achieved without power. i bid adieu.
@reiyu013 And mind you, it was Marcos' latter economic policies that caused the Philippines to sink low. The economy got so badly damaged that we are still reeling from the effects 25 years later. And that is fact.
So where's your discipline now?
I pray no future president will execute you or your family because he or she thinks that you are a political liability. Though that may be a good thing. You know, "for the good of the nation."
@stompboxer the economy crashed because of Aquino's mismanagement, FVR's Expo Filipino, Erap's Jueteng Payola, and GMA's low IQ. It was during Marcos' regime when huge projects which lead to easier transportation of good nationwide and worldwide (e.g. San Juanico Bridge) were deployed. Pull out some GDP growth charts, and you'll see.
I'm not saying that Ferdinand Marcos is as clean as snow. He might have done corruption (especially Imelda), but do compare that to the current senate right now
@reiyu013 Wow. You must have been reading a bizarre GDP chart. Because the chart I'm holding now says otherwise. In fact, it just confirmed the precipitation that started in Marcos' era. Not to mention the peso crash of his time. Things turned uglier money-wise when Ninoy got shot.
Wait, you don't mind FM's corruption as much as he executed people to maintain his sense of order? Mindboggling. I'd like to introduce you to his friends Saddam, Adolf Hitler, and Nero Caesar.
I think ka-batch ni General Tomas Diaz ang Heavenly Brigadier General Royette Padilla of the Heavenly International Police Commission of the H-World United Nations Military Philippine Government. LOL*
Most of these are college students, of which they were not even born during the EDSA uprising in 1986. They just need to be educated properly in schools. These are the kids who grew up with the handphones, the internet and Facebook. So, I'm not surprised if they don't know even this part of our History.
@chuivaka please do not generalize, i was lucky that my parents fought during martial law, and it was instilled to us as children. its just a pity that some of us really dont have an idea the importance of edsa. as i said, the only way we'll realize the worth of something is when it disappears or if we experience it for ourselves.
We can't blame everything on them. No. 1 education system in the Philippines is going down the drain. No. 2 No concrete results really happened after EDSA I except to remove Marcos...Corruption is still rampant (much worse), people are becoming poorer and poorer, people haven't had a real "leader" that can lead them. So why blame everything on these students??? Sure, we regain our democracy but did democracy changed us to be better people?? Did democracy enriched our lives? No insults intended.
IMHO.
Edsa is not just history..it is a gift from my parents and God 2 the young Filipinos..If I'm able to open my facebook today without fear of being arrested that's because i'm enjoying the freedom of a democratic country which surfaced from the shadows f martial law..tingnan lang natin kung makapagtext ka pa kung walang edsa1..
Oh my God! never heard such apathetic response! What are they studying about? SHAME on this video! This shows how apathetic Filipinos right now. I am a Filipina by heart, mind and soul.Hey this is OUR HISTORY people! you wake up! Hindi ko talaga kinaya. Ilang tao ang nagbuwis ng buhay para lang ma-achieve natin ang freedom from the MARCOS REGIME!
ano kaya yung "reputable school" niyang yun. NAKAKAINIS LANG.
"Hindi naman siya (EDSA) kailangan bigyan ng pansin kasi we're living sa present e. it's not something we need."
What the heck, people. The suffering people had to go through and the fighting they did 25 years ago should not be disregarded. They did all of that so we could have THIS.
"Kasi si Ninoy talaga yung naging presdient e." Nakakahiyang nakakaiyak naman.
I approve with Marcos' way. Indeed, the Filipino people LACK discipline. Also, one of them is also right that as a normal person, knowing this would be totally irrelevant because so many people STRIVE to migrate outside the country, and this is a fact. The only thing the country needs to be able to achieve a high state in the world is to have discipline, which 98% of the people don't have, and the other 2% migrate out of the country; ergo, impossible.
@stompboxer oh please, my parents and grand parents didn't even suffer one bit during the regime. it was only the politicians and extremists who suffered.
@reiyu013 Precisely my point. You speak like that because your family or friends weren't tortured or executed. And no, it wasn't just "politicians and extremists." Students too. A huge number of brilliant students who believed they had a right to speak out. AND an EVEN BIGGER number of innocents who just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.
So what, a few lives are worth sacrificing in the name of "order"? *coughdespotismcough*
@reiyu013 One can believe people stood up for freedom so that ignoramuses like the ones above would be free to *choose* to be ignorant. And the freedoms we enjoy now enable thinkers and doers to have enough legroom to educate those ignoramuses. Before, just having Marxist friends could get you tortured.
@stompboxer i didn't have the need to answer your question. all i see right now is the fruit of what was done. oh, and another thing, crime rates were down to almost zero during martial law, and the economy was BOOMING. the only criminals i know that were roaming around were the police who abuse their power and the corrupt officials *coughFVRcough*
1986 Revolution was a complete farce. It doesn't make me wonder that it's importance amounts to null.

Just because they don't know, doesn't mean other students don't know too.
PLS avoid generalizing, especially students particularly students from the U-BELT.
Even in U.P, there are students who can't answer those questions well. More likely its on the person, not the school.
Just a piece of advice.
don't do something that you might regret
how? ALWAYS USE YOUR COCONUT.

Instead of bashing the student for their ignorance, as Filipinos i suggest we do our part in enlightening everyone with what we know.

We could not totally blame the youth for their ignorance of history. The way they are taught must be our concern. Many educators themselves are not to abreast with history along with the parents and guardians of these youth. Certainly, its a wake up all for those who treasure EDSA very much along with the different events that have shaped our country.

frapplenz 1 year ago
@frapplenz We should try to look deeper into the problem. It's too easy to blame the students, or the youth in its entirety, because they are the result of what the society has gone through for the past years. It's not just EDSA; I'm talking about the Filipino culture per se. The country is in a continuous struggle in learning its identity since the Spaniards colonized the country. That's why proper EDUCATION is the only way to resolve this. It starts at what we learn at school.

@babbleboyquito tulad ng mga examples mo, sana naging madugo na lang ang edsa para mag naging malaki ang epekto sa tao... sabi nga sa 300, 'freedom itself is not free. it comes with the highest cost. the cost of blood''
marx0089 1 year ago
@marx0089 you know what, I agree with you. I and Philippine history in general. To paraphrase one of the American founders (I think it was Jefferson? not sure), the foundations of the nation are strengthened by the blood of the patriots as mortar.
Kapag may dugo, may sugat. Kapag may sugat, may hapdi. Kapag may hapdi, mas may talab at mas hindi malilimutan.
babbleboyquito 1 year ago
@babbleboyquito A lot of blood was spilled during those time. Maybe not during the EDSA Revolution itself but from the start of Martial Law, there were executions and torture. So, to say that no blood or lives were spilled or lost, is untrue. As you know, Gen. Fabian Ver requested from Pres. Marcos, in front of Local and International Press to shoot at demonstrators on the 25th of Feb 1986. Maybe Pres. Marcos denied his request because it was done publicly.
wisekingjohn 1 year ago
@wisekingjohn I was just referring to the EDSA Revolution itself.:) True, there were a lot of unexplained disappearances and deaths as well as tortures during the entire period of Martial Law. Martial Law was indeed a very painful sting on the Filipino nation. Maybe the bloodlessness of the EDSA Revolution somehow desensitized that sting? I'm pretty sure that those in the video know very little of what really transpired during Martial Law. Maybe this ignorance is also a result of desensitization

Sadly, money talks.
reiyu013 1 year ago
@reiyu013 No hate. But you have just put on record that you are pro-despotism. Which, as we all know has never ever brought economic stability to any country.
Don't say "Singapore" because Lee Kuan Yew never dared to cross the line that Marcos did. And Lee actually was on record about Marcos ending up as a crook.
stompboxer 1 year ago
@stompboxer and one more thing, I'm not pro-despotism, but if people were to abide laws easily, such actions would not be required. It's more of an if-then-else statement. after marcos implemented the martial law and the curfew, crime rates plunged to almost nil. my elders would say that it was the most peaceful time ever in their lives. every centavo was worth a lot, i don't know where you pulled off your words that the economy was bad, my citations says otherwise.
reiyu013 1 year ago
@reiyu013 Well I don't know where you pulled off *yours*. It's appalling.
Wait wait wait. Political dissension is law-breaking? Political protest is law-breaking? And their actions are on the same level as drug-dealing? Wow. WOW.
stompboxer 1 year ago
@reiyu013 Just because your apathetic relatives never experienced any troubles doesn't mean there was NONE. My elders didn't experience anything either, but being close to Marcos they KNEW what he was up to.
stompboxer 1 year ago
@stompboxer never did i hear of "innocents" being oppressed in the articles that i read during martial law. all i've stumbled upon are activists, extremists, protesters, politicians, drug dealers, and criminals. i might be wrong, but from the words of my elders, nothing bad happened to those who have done nothing wrong.
reiyu013 1 year ago
@stompboxer the crash began during 1984, where government officials REFUSED to cooperate with the regiment. the years prior to that were all positive, in fact booming. I pulled out my charts from the International Monetary Fund website. what about you?
oh please, FM's ways are way too soft compared against Fidel Castro's, and Cuba is doing way better than the Philippines as we speak.
reiyu013 1 year ago
@reiyu013
Oh please, you just got that from the IMF website??? Those are the only charts you have? Economy is much more intricate than that! I got mine from the DoF archives. Long ago.
stompboxer 1 year ago
@reiyu013 I will let your comments speak for itself.
1. It's okay to sacrifice a few lives for the common good (aka the Martial Law atrocities). CHECK.
2. Activists and protesters are on the same level as drug dealers and criminals. CHECK.
3. Your POV stems from the fact that your family got the better end of the Martial Law deal. CHECK.
stompboxer 1 year ago
@stompboxer it's true that my family had the good end of the martial law. they lived their lives most peaceful during those time, no reason for them to oppose the government. monetary value was great as per the elderly, structures were fixed, parks were clean, crime rate minimal to nil, corruption wasn't bad compared to now. if the economy stood steady as when it was before, there would be no reason for us to move out. last two cents: order can NEVER be achieved without power. i bid adieu.
reiyu013 1 year ago
@reiyu013 And mind you, it was Marcos' latter economic policies that caused the Philippines to sink low. The economy got so badly damaged that we are still reeling from the effects 25 years later. And that is fact.
So where's your discipline now?
I pray no future president will execute you or your family because he or she thinks that you are a political liability. Though that may be a good thing. You know, "for the good of the nation."
stompboxer 1 year ago
@stompboxer the economy crashed because of Aquino's mismanagement, FVR's Expo Filipino, Erap's Jueteng Payola, and GMA's low IQ. It was during Marcos' regime when huge projects which lead to easier transportation of good nationwide and worldwide (e.g. San Juanico Bridge) were deployed. Pull out some GDP growth charts, and you'll see.
I'm not saying that Ferdinand Marcos is as clean as snow. He might have done corruption (especially Imelda), but do compare that to the current senate right now
reiyu013 1 year ago
@reiyu013 Wow. You must have been reading a bizarre GDP chart. Because the chart I'm holding now says otherwise. In fact, it just confirmed the precipitation that started in Marcos' era. Not to mention the peso crash of his time. Things turned uglier money-wise when Ninoy got shot.
Wait, you don't mind FM's corruption as much as he executed people to maintain his sense of order? Mindboggling. I'd like to introduce you to his friends Saddam, Adolf Hitler, and Nero Caesar.

@reiyu013 One can believe people stood up for freedom so that ignoramuses like the ones above would be free to *choose* to be ignorant. Of course you didn't answer my question.

@reiyu013 Ok, let me get this straight: the end justifies the means, right?
We can sacrifice people in the name of order, is that what you're saying?

@stompboxer let me ask you this, has there ever been any conquest without any sacrifices, whether it was for good or bad?
