@MW2zeppelinfan331 They didn't need two drummers, Phil was just a self centered cunt who had to make himself known even though it got on people's nerves.
@timstillinghast Well LZ don't suck but they were going down as a band towards the end anyway. By all accounts their live performances during the 1980 tour were uninspired & not good. To be honest, I challenge anyone to sing like Robert Plant after 25+ years of singing (at the time), constantly wearing your voice down. Also, if you listen to earlier versions of this song (1973), you'll see that Robert always sings lower live than on record, and his attempt to sing higher here was admirable. I think these guys deserve some slack.

@HoboJones10 Initially it was Robert and Phil then Plant had the idea of playing with Page. Then Bob Geldof and the late Bill Graham said "a Led Zeppelin reunion is a better idea than a Page/Plant/Collins collaboration". Phil played on Robert's first two solo albums and first US solo tour and Plant said repeatedly that Collins was a motivator to get him to creating music and make a solo career work. Put on any Genesis album up to 1981 and Brand X album and his first love was as drummer!

i can remember being really disappointed with their performance back then. 26 years later turns out I was right. If you watch the whole Live Aid show there are a bunch of sets that I like better by bands I didnt care for ( David Bowie and Queen). Queen espicially.

A few bands can play less than par and all people in the audience would still be happy to see them. Led Zeppelin is one, and you know if they played today, you'd get yourself to their concert, no matter how their skill level was.
They are all a little under rehearsed and Jimmy was a little out of tune and had too much flange but the guy who needed practice the most was Phil Collins. He didn't know his fuckin parts and he drummed a little different for Led Zeppelin. The real members of Led Zeppelin weren't at peak performance but they would have pulled it off with Bonham or someone who knew how to drum with these songs. Phil's just didn't fit in.
Jimmy's a bit too drunk,Phil as much as I respect him is just no Bonham,Robert just seems like he can't sing like he could seven or eight years previous to this. This for me as a big Zep fan...Sucks ass.
@LedWilde Well, I recall seeing them at the Gardens back in 70 something and they were just terrible. From watching this vid, they didnt get any better LIVE. They are still a great band, I just think that they are OVER-amped...too distorted, too high/drunk, too something. But not my cup of tea for a live band
@GreenManalichi The Gardens? Madison Square or a different one? Well, this video isn't the best example. I saw Page and Plant in 1998 and they sounded great. Jimmy also played a fuckin amazing solo in the song Babe I'm Gonna Leave You that blew me away too! But hey, I don't argue opinion.
@GreenManalichi ;; To High or Drunk is right !.....Jeeez,, Page really suck'in it up !.... (BTW)-> After it was all said & done,,All the Money made from LIVE AID, Did it really even accomplish anything for Africa ?????
robert was 37 and he looked 47 its just sad and did he stomp out his ciggarete before he started? its so sad what happened to his voice... he aged terrible
Leave it to Phil Collins to weasel his way into the act. They already had Tony Thompson for drums....but Phil just had to get involved and overdo the drums. Jimmy was rusty enough without Phil's "help".
Tony Thompson on drums who was going to fill in for a full reunion of Led Zepplin but got in a car accident. Tony was from Power Station, Chic fame was was a very heavy drummer.
@bcbear2000 I'm not even sure that Phil Collins was mic'd for this. Thompson just blew him right off the stage. I was in HS at the time and I remember everyone talking about TT the next day.
July 13, 1985...one of the greatest days of my life! Greatest concert in history.
Ok, Plant's voice cracked...so f*cking what?
Buy the DVD. Maybe one day, they'll have the entire, pristime sets of all of the artists, instead of the truncated version which you get today in the (still) most excelled DVD set.
No wonder Plant turned down millions to tour with Led Zep again. Even in '85 it was hard for him to sing those high notes. Awesome singer, don't get me wrong, but what he was able to do when he was young was hard to sustain as he got older.
why do they have two people on drums? Phil Collins did the same thing to Ringo Starr at the Prince's Trust Concert when George Harrison played Here Comes the Sun. Phil Collins doesnt always have to play every single song
Boy I wudnt pay a dollar to listen to plants shit voice today. He's just too old for this stuff. In the 70s he was crazy at vocals and I love it. But he shud just retire now before he starts embarrassing himself. I love plant but he shud stop tryin since he really lost his voice.
Wow. It’s been forever and a day since that show. I remember watching it at home, VIA Satellite. I taped it, but of course, tapes get ruined, become obsolete. Now would be a great time for MTV & the promoters to think about releasing it on DVD. And let me just point out, it took two great drummers to put out what only the best drummer could do alone. Meaning, John Bonham is THE HAMMER. Jimmy’s still makes me cream my panties.
I saw in an interview years later that the last thing Phil wanted to do was play the drums with LZ because Tony was already in place so there was no need for him to be there. But at the last minute they asked him to join in. Phil said it was awful and he was just basically winging the whole time. He said he was very uncomfortable.
I didn't, and wasn't bashing Phil Collins at all. They rehearsed with one drummer and should have performed with one drummer. Zeppelin is not a 2 drummer band. Collins was at the height of his popularity and added by the producers, for what ever reason. He added nothing to the show except making the audio more impossible to listen to than it already was. I think he is a good drummer, but certainly not one of the best in "rock history". He is a much better singer/song writer than a drummer.
@fanofprotopic The entire performance was marred by problems. Plant couldn't hear himself thruout the entire performance. Jimmy's mix was too low & often couldn't hear himself either. At 2:13 he gets his guitar cord tangled around a mic stand. They rehearsed with Tony Thompson once & then were joined on stage by Phil Collins, who never played with them before & kept missing his cues. The appearance was such a "shambolic disaster" (In JImmy's own words), they refused to include it on the DVD
Worth watching for the debacle - I was mortified back in 1985 when I saw this but have gotten used to this over time. Still looks and sounds like a plane wreck but at least they showed up for a good cause. Jimmy claimed his guitar was tuned wrongly...Robert said his voice was shot from being on tour... Whatever...forward to the Page Plant era and see a big improvement. These guys were rusty no doubt about it...
I once heard that the reason they never got back together was because of this aweful performance. They realized that Bonham was just about irreplaceable. Phil Collins was making a lot of money in those days and should have been man enough to sit this one out. A young Jason Bonham would have been better than these 2
@wmjoca No offense, but bashing Phil for this performance is about on par with saying Plant sucks for the same reason. Phil Collins is one of the best drummers in rock history, as Plant is one of the best singers in rock history. This whole Live Aid debacle sucked but they shouldn't be condemned for it.
this is right after he married aunt weezies grand daghter and franks sister from metairie La.they used to play cards with my mother, not zep aunt weezie and frank, she looked good in cowby boots and a hippie dress, she was dating cokehead Al Copeland, the inventor of Popeyes chicken when she met jimmy page and dropped al like a box of cold chicken hahaah no shit check it out
Led Zep rock but damn were they ropey at Live Aid - Planty's voice is fucked and Page is all over the place....and out of tune......John Paul Jones is fine and there's nothing wrong with Collins or Thompson!
How embarrassing is Plant? He's acting like a 13 year old boy at a wedding after his first drink. Forget Page and Collins here; Plant is singing and looking like a proper stupid cunt. Ladies and gentlemen we have a winner.
This is a reply to EVERYONE who doesn't have the story right. Here are the FACTS:
Tony was the drummer that rehearsed the show. Phil did not. When he got to the show, he wanted to sit in, making it a 2 drummer tribute to Bonham. Had he hung back and let Tony play the majority of the main drum parts, they would have sounded better. But I remember watching the whole performance on TV and seeing PC mess up in a lot of places. Taking nothing form him, but he simply wasn't prepared.
Why was Tony Thompson trying to outdrum Phil Collins? I know he's dead and all but...what a cunt. Ultimately, the only one who comes out of this with his credentials intact as Collins. Pagey blamed him for all sorts of things. At least Phil didn't turn up completely caned out of his skull. Planty, who at least had some experience of life after Zeppelin, is not at his best here.

Oh dear, you might as well put Mick Hucknall in a band like the Faces.

a government backed public inquiry back in england came to the verdict that this was all phil collins fault.
ledzzappa 5 months ago
Leave it to Phil Collins to weasel his way into the act. They already had Tony Thompson for drums....but Phil just had to get involved and overdo the drums. Jimmy was rusty enough without Phil's "help".

Alot of shit being said about page and plant here but it was the audio engineer who should have been shot not them

Playing with Phil Collins. Dear God how lame is that? Robert Plant was singing in 80s ersatz-techno mode.

Queen stole the show at this event.. Easily. Zeppelin sounded waaay off here. This wasn't even Zeppelin anymore. Led Zeppelin died in 1980.

Tony Thompson on drums who was going to fill in for a full reunion of Led Zepplin but got in a car accident. Tony was from Power Station, Chic fame was was a very heavy drummer.
bcbear2000 6 months ago
@bcbear2000 I'm not even sure that Phil Collins was mic'd for this. Thompson just blew him right off the stage. I was in HS at the time and I remember everyone talking about TT the next day.

July 13, 1985...one of the greatest days of my life! Greatest concert in history.
Ok, Plant's voice cracked...so f*cking what?
Buy the DVD. Maybe one day, they'll have the entire, pristime sets of all of the artists, instead of the truncated version which you get today in the (still) most excelled DVD set.

Mr8bitgamer 6 months ago
No wonder Plant turned down millions to tour with Led Zep again. Even in '85 it was hard for him to sing those high notes. Awesome singer, don't get me wrong, but what he was able to do when he was young was hard to sustain as he got older.
dpotemkin 6 months ago
That's right! If Bonzo isn't there you d*mn well better have TWO drummer! ;+)

rumour has it,led zeppelin thought their performance was so bad, they actually DISALLOWED their appearance from being included on the dvd.

Page's tone is shit here. Also Phil Collins can suck one. That two drummer nonsense always drives me crazy.
c0m3t0g3th3r 7 months ago
why do they have two people on drums? Phil Collins did the same thing to Ringo Starr at the Prince's Trust Concert when George Harrison played Here Comes the Sun. Phil Collins doesnt always have to play every single song

Sounds like Robert needs to cough.

You know it's the 80s when even Jimmy Page is using an assload of chorus on his guitar

i have this concert on DVD but this song is not on it, why
pablocruz420 10 months ago
@pablocruz420 the zep guys have always refused permission to include it because they thought the performance sucked
PutItAway101 9 months ago
I didn't, and wasn't bashing Phil Collins at all. They rehearsed with one drummer and should have performed with one drummer. Zeppelin is not a 2 drummer band. Collins was at the height of his popularity and added by the producers, for what ever reason. He added nothing to the show except making the audio more impossible to listen to than it already was. I think he is a good drummer, but certainly not one of the best in "rock history". He is a much better singer/song writer than a drummer.
wmjoca 10 months ago
@wmjoca
go listen to some of his work with brand x and very early genesis, then we'll talk about his drumming ability....
frk75 9 months ago
@frk75 Being a great Jazz Fusion drummer does not necessarily translate to being a great rock drummer.

@wmjoca I think you have it the wrong way around regarding Phil's drumming and song writing abilities.

bearmassaro 11 months ago
wow, Plant's voice was SHOT!
fanofprotopic 11 months ago
@fanofprotopic The entire performance was marred by problems. Plant couldn't hear himself thruout the entire performance. Jimmy's mix was too low & often couldn't hear himself either. At 2:13 he gets his guitar cord tangled around a mic stand. They rehearsed with Tony Thompson once & then were joined on stage by Phil Collins, who never played with them before & kept missing his cues. The appearance was such a "shambolic disaster" (In JImmy's own words), they refused to include it on the DVD
bearmassaro 11 months ago
they couldnt get anyone other than the Sususudio guy to play drums

ARFF2690 1 year ago
Worth watching for the debacle - I was mortified back in 1985 when I saw this but have gotten used to this over time. Still looks and sounds like a plane wreck but at least they showed up for a good cause. Jimmy claimed his guitar was tuned wrongly...Robert said his voice was shot from being on tour... Whatever...forward to the Page Plant era and see a big improvement. These guys were rusty no doubt about it...
galenyeo 1 year ago
I once heard that the reason they never got back together was because of this aweful performance. They realized that Bonham was just about irreplaceable. Phil Collins was making a lot of money in those days and should have been man enough to sit this one out. A young Jason Bonham would have been better than these 2
wmjoca 1 year ago
@wmjoca No offense, but bashing Phil for this performance is about on par with saying Plant sucks for the same reason. Phil Collins is one of the best drummers in rock history, as Plant is one of the best singers in rock history. This whole Live Aid debacle sucked but they shouldn't be condemned for it.
lifesglorydead 10 months ago
What the fuck is up with Jimmy's guitar, it sounds absolutely awful, like a maelstorm of reverb.
Plant seems to be the only one here with any sense of drive.

Taking nothing form him, but he simply wasn't prepared.
megavega4 1 year ago
Why was Tony Thompson trying to outdrum Phil Collins? I know he's dead and all but...what a cunt. Ultimately, the only one who comes out of this with his credentials intact as Collins. Pagey blamed him for all sorts of things. At least Phil didn't turn up completely caned out of his skull. Planty, who at least had some experience of life after Zeppelin, is not at his best here.

phil was fine on the drums , why behave like spinal tap !
