  • 4:41 Jimmy paige :D the fuck

  • lol Jimmy page at 2:13

  • jimmy page and robert plant both sound absolutely terrible here. so out of practice. collins and thompson are the only ones keeping the song from completely falling apart!

  • who put Jimmy's guitar on a Phaser pedal? sounds like crap. Marshall amp cranked, that's all he needs.

  • Phil was such an attention whore, butting in so much.

  • well, Page was certainly bit worse for wear but still remains - with Keef - the only guitarist who can wear a white scarf and not look like a complete fucking prick...any guitarist who thinks its cool to wear scarves on stage should be shot. immediately.

  • Funny little humans start beating their fists in the air when they hear a certain sound... aliens laugh. /laughingalien

  • It's still "Rock n Roll" and I like it.

  • led zeppelin was so good...at Live Aid, they had to use 2 drummers instead of John Bonham

  • @MW2zeppelinfan331 They didn't need two drummers, Phil was just a self centered cunt who had to make himself known even though it got on people's nerves.

  • @MW2zeppelinfan331 Led Zep used session musicians also

  • phil sux, shoulda used queens drummer...

  • as soon as Plant started singing he must thought 'oh fuck'

  • you can hear roberts voice crackling

    but oh my god!

    the atmosphere was amazing

i wish i could have been there shame i was born 11 years after this

  • @timstillinghast Well LZ don't suck but they were going down as a band towards the end anyway. By all accounts their live performances during the 1980 tour were uninspired & not good. Even going so far as page getting booed at one show while restringing his guitar. IMO LZ had their good days behind them right before bonham passed away.

  • To be honest, I challenge anyone to sing like Robert Plant after 25+ years of singing (at the time), constantly wearing your voice down. Also, if you listen to earlier versions of this song (1973), you'll see that Robert always sings lower live than on record, and his attempt to sing higher here was admirable. I think these guys deserve some slack.

  • Plant was warming up by the 3rd song. I feel for him!

  • LOL @ roberts hair

  • the worst i've ever heard Page. the guy is my absolute hero but he and Plant sound like crap, terrible. and the drummers ruined the whole vibe, don't care who they are. embarrassing... thanks for posting tho...

  • I always heard that Phil Collins "ruined" this performance, but by the looks and sounds of it they didn't need any help. They kept speeding up, but I think that was possibly Tony Thompson's fault, because Phil was used to playing with a second drummer (he and chester thompson often drummed together at Genesis shows). Either way it seems they had fun

  • a lot of flanger in there

  • They sounded pretty bad!!

  • Terrible vocal wasnt it. - it gets worse every time you listen to it ?

  • both drummers together, who thought of that idea? terrible drumming

  • @michaelatilanotv they should have just had the black drummer not phil collins.. by most accounts phil collins was the problem not the black drummer who i forget his name

  • @Gettheledoutstyle tony thompson

  • @Gettheledoutstyle Actually it was Robert & Jimmy. Robert voice wasn't up to par & Jimmy playing wasn't to good. Now if they had more time to rehearse, then they might had pulled it off.

  • Robert does not reach those higher notes without cracking. Sadly enough.

  • Robert kinda looks like Jon Anderson of Yes, just a bit.

  • @losthighway1988 and both were consistently voted top vocalists in the 70's... Jon Anderson has never been recognized because Rolling Stone and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame dislike of Yes and all things prog.

  • Plant is cracking all over the place. He should have warmed up his voice

  • aweful

  • Hahahahaha, Black Sabbath did pretty damn well with all their difficulties.I just can't understand why the Gods of Valhalla didn't shine graciously upon the mighty Zep. The Gods must have been displeased, I mean Led Zeppelin can't suck, or can they? I loved the "office casual Friday" look they had going. Fitting for such a eerie and dark legend of Rock.

  • audio is pretty weak

  • This sound shit.

  • Goes to show even a guitar god like jimmy page can have stiff fingers some days..he missed a bunch notes in the solo, and just relied on blues bends all over the neck.he must of been fucked up.. Because he is still

    Amaziing to this day..

  • Collins is superior to Bonham in a vacuum, but he's not the right fit for Zeppelin.

  • jimmy page rocks

  • you need a guy with a mustache and a drinking problem playing hard rock songs...not phil collins for christs sake

  • HAHAHAHA... plant looks like Patrick Swayzee

  • Comment removed

  • Two drummers to make up for bonzo though. Seems appropriate.

  • I wonder if bob made them play with phil? Nothing wrong with Phil, but he's not rock n roll at all. They should've got lars, or anybody else lol.

  • @HoboJones10 Initially it was Robert and Phil then Plant had the idea of playing with Page. Then Bob Geldof and the late Bill Graham said "a Led Zeppelin reunion is a better idea than a Page/Plant/Collins collaboration". Phil played on Robert's first two solo albums and first US solo tour and Plant said repeatedly that Collins was a motivator to get him to creating music and make a solo career work. Put on any Genesis album up to 1981 and Brand X album and his first love was as drummer!

  • The funny thing is as bad as this may sound, it still is a million times better than anything you'd hear from music today.

  • That was electrifying

  • plant sound like shit and they tried to blame phil collins for their shitty performance

  • @vincentmack37 are you serious? Plant sounds really really good. The shit Plant is when he sounds like axl rose, here he has that full soulful blues sound

  • @mjordan1998 He never warmed up and he i singing too high. He either needs to stop trying to hit the note the next ocative up or tune down the instruments by either half or a full key! I'm a singer... I know

  • @kkiinnggyy what? hes like two notes LOWER than the recording..... But yeah he needed to warm up and smooth out the kinks and mucus

  • No matter what Zeppelin is the best rock band in the world THE GODS OF ROCK BONZO IS THE HAMMER OF THE GODS !!! ALWAYS WILL BE MISSED R.I.P......

  • they sound like my dogs arse when his having big shi

  • @AlabamaJackable shit!

  • To whoever filmed this- WHAT THE HELL? There's no "I" in "Team" and there's CERTAINLY no "I" in "PAGE" !

  • sounds like Plant smoked a bunch of Cigarettes before going on.

  • voice - shite; mix - wank; guitar sound - turd; drums - doggo. what a shame

  • Too much blame being thrown around for a bad performance but if the sound was better this would have been a moot point.

  • ugggh! luv Zep but they sound terrible! Jimmy Paige is totally out of it and Plant sounds like garbage.

  • Led Zep was pretty bad at this show. Great moment but they were off and Jimmy Paige was REALLY off. Guess that's why they wanted their set left off the Live Aid DVD. It wasn't THAT bad, but def not Led Zep quality. Queen and U2 by far the best of the day.

  • Jimmy"s guitar tech, should have got the shit knocked out of him!,

  • Back when MTV was cool and fun to watch....

  • this is terrible

  • Not even two guys were able to doo Bonzo's job ;)

  • @champiforest with all due respect to the late great John Bonham ,Tony Thompson and Phil Collins don't have to take a back set to anyone. Both those guys are (were in Tony's case) legends on the drums themselves and it will be recorded as such in the history of rock. They certainly weren't there to replace him... they were paying tribute to a colleague who left this earth all to soon.

¡Salud!

  • whats with the guitar sound? :\

    its all echoy and stuff...

  • @RumbleFiish It sounds like Page was using a Flanger.Straight into the amp would have been so much better, imo.

  • @tonyzep Phil screwed it up

  • also two drummers was a dumb idea. With Phil playing mostly back beat it cluttered up any fills that Tony was doing.

  • I was there and the crowd went ballistic. Who cares if they weren't in peak form. The moment and the whole day was incredible. Even so many years later the idiotic VJs from MYV should've just shut the hell up.

  • They probably hadn't practiced since 1979! And Page's Phaser switch got stuck!!! Horrible! I do better with my friends.

  • @BobbyTwoTimes They played this song in 1980

  • @BobbyTwoTimes but thats only 1 year later than 1979 so dont worry :P

  • imagine Allan White or Bill Bruford instead of the no-account,seen here.

  • @JohnAllanification Listen to some of the drumming Phil Collins did with Genesis. As far as progressive rock goes he's definitely in the same league as Allan White or Bill Bruford. ...and Tony Thompson? Listen to him with the power station. As far as just SOUND goes, he was the closest there was to JB. I imagine that's why Led Zeppelin asked him to play in the first place.

  • @J4B7 i admit to not thinking as much but i'll consider it now.

    ty for return comment&head's -up.

  • @JohnAllanification It's all good. To me at this level asking who is a better drummer is kind of like asking what's a better color? Red or Blue? The other thing we don't want to lose focus about either is that 1st and foremost this was a fundraiser. Fun for the musicians and audience yes, but at the end of the day they helped feed a lot of people back in 1985. Great chatting with you. Thanks for the conversation.

  • @J4B7

  • @J4B7 oh yeah old Genesis was friggin aaaawwweeesome! Genesis went thru like 5 drummers before finding Phil...he changed them instantly. Very very underrated as a drummer...he influenced Neil Peart!

  • @ArmorOfChrist777 Thanks for the reply. Anyone who doubts Phil's abilities should check out his drumming on Robbery, Assault and Battery or Cinema Show.... Think I'll throw that on now! :-)

  • @tonyzep You fuckin goon

  • They really suck live this time. But I still love Led Zeppelin.

  • i can remember being really disappointed with their performance back then. 26 years later turns out I was right. I was never a Zep fan to begin with but its sad when the most polished guy up there is Phil Collins. If you watch the whole Live Aid show there are a bunch of sets that I like better by bands I didnt care for ( David Bowie and Queen). Queen espicially.

  • A few bands can play less than par and all people in the audience would still be happy to see them. Led Zeppelin is one, and you know if they played today, you'd get yourself to their concert, no matter how their skill level was.

  • They are all a little under rehearsed and Jimmy was a little out of tune and had too much flange but the guy who needed practice the most was Phil Collins. He didn't know his fuckin parts and he drummed a little different for Led Zeppelin. The real members of Led Zeppelin weren't at peak performance but they would have pulled it off with Bonham or someone who knew how to drum with these songs. Phil's just didn't fit in.

  • Jimmy's a bit too drunk,Phil as much as I respect him is just no Bonham,Robert just seems like he can't sing like he could seven or eight years previous to this. This for me as a big Zep fan...Sucks ass.

  • Zep always sucked live......but I still love em

  • @GreenManalichi They didn't always suck live.

  • @LedWilde Well, I recall seeing them at the Gardens back in 70 something and they were just terrible. From watching this vid, they didnt get any better LIVE. They are still a great band, I just think that they are OVER-amped...too distorted, too high/drunk, too something. But not my cup of tea for a live band

  • @GreenManalichi The Gardens? Madison Square or a different one? Well, this video isn't the best example. I saw Page and Plant in 1998 and they sounded great. Jimmy also played a fuckin amazing solo in the song Babe I'm Gonna Leave You that blew me away too! But hey, I don't argue opinion.

  • @GreenManalichi ;; To High or Drunk is right !.....Jeeez,, Page really suck'in it up !.... (BTW)-> After it was all said & done,,All the Money made from LIVE AID, Did it really even accomplish anything for Africa ?????

  • @GreenManalichi Haven't ever checked out How The West Was Won?

  • robert was 37 and he looked 47 its just sad and did he stomp out his ciggarete before he started? its so sad what happened to his voice... he aged terrible

  • Oh dear, you might as well put Mick Hucknall in a band like the Faces.

  • a government backed public inquiry back in england came to the verdict that this was all phil collins fault.

  • Leave it to Phil Collins to weasel his way into the act. They already had Tony Thompson for drums....but Phil just had to get involved and overdo the drums. Jimmy was rusty enough without Phil's "help".

  • Alot of shit being said about page and plant here but it was the audio engineer who should have been shot not them

  • jimmy's too drunk

  • Playing with Phil Collins. Dear God how lame is that? Robert Plant was singing in 80s ersatz-techno mode.

  • Well now we know where Rod Stewart gets his hairspray and dresses from nowadays.

  • Queen stole the show at this event.. Easily. Zeppelin sounded waaay off here. This wasn't even Zeppelin anymore. Led Zeppelin died in 1980.

  • Tony Thompson on drums who was going to fill in for a full reunion of Led Zepplin but got in a car accident. Tony was from Power Station, Chic fame was was a very heavy drummer.

  • @bcbear2000 I'm not even sure that Phil Collins was mic'd for this. Thompson just blew him right off the stage. I was in HS at the time and I remember everyone talking about TT the next day.

  • SORRY who is JIMMY PAIGE? hahahah AUTO TROLL MODE XD !!!!!!!!!!

  • how is JIMMY PAIGE!!!!!!!!!!!??????????????

  • jimmy page fucking rules he totally kicks slash,s ass man

  • they spelled jimmy page wrong hahahahaaaaa

  • July 13, 1985...one of the greatest days of my life! Greatest concert in history.

    Ok, Plant's voice cracked...so f*cking what?

Buy the DVD. Maybe one day, they'll have the entire, pristime sets of all of the artists, instead of the truncated version which you get today in the (still) most excelled DVD set.

  • this was included in LiveAidDVD¡?

  • wish i was there queen, led zeppelin, phill colins wtf its musical heaven

  • No wonder Plant turned down millions to tour with Led Zep again. Even in '85 it was hard for him to sing those high notes. Awesome singer, don't get me wrong, but what he was able to do when he was young was hard to sustain as he got older.

  • That's right! If Bonzo isn't there you d*mn well better have TWO drummer! ;+)

  • rumour has it,led zeppelin thought their performance was so bad, they actually DISALLOWED their appearance from being included on the dvd.

  • @stuart38 no rumor about it.......that and one of the members was severely intoxicated.....

  • guess jimmy's gain knob didn't go to eleven...but his flanger did..awful

  • @vaipunk ha ha so right

  • Page's tone is shit here. Also Phil Collins can suck one. That two drummer nonsense always drives me crazy.

  • why do they have two people on drums? Phil Collins did the same thing to Ringo Starr at the Prince's Trust Concert when George Harrison played Here Comes the Sun. Phil Collins doesnt always have to play every single song

  • Sounds like Robert needs to cough.

  • Boy I wudnt pay a dollar to listen to plants shit voice today. He's just too old for this stuff. In the 70s he was crazy at vocals and I love it. But he shud just retire now before he starts embarrassing himself. I love plant but he shud stop tryin since he really lost his voice.

  • Robert plant reminds me of the character Desmond of Lost...

  • Man i wonder how cocaine was being consumed backstage? LOL i bet keith richards was doing blow with jack and elton john

  • I WAS THERE !

  • i'm sorry but i can't watch it without bonzo :'(

  • Dig those WHITE shoes!! LOL!

  • Robert Plant sounds horrible.......

  • Wow. It’s been forever and a day since that show. I remember watching it at home, VIA Satellite. I taped it, but of course, tapes get ruined, become obsolete. Now would be a great time for MTV & the promoters to think about releasing it on DVD. And let me just point out, it took two great drummers to put out what only the best drummer could do alone. Meaning, John Bonham is THE HAMMER. Jimmy’s still makes me cream my panties.

  • Oh Little Robert Anthony...

  • due batterie per essere all'altezza di john bonham BONZO... morto 5 anni prima.

  • I saw in an interview years later that the last thing Phil wanted to do was play the drums with LZ because Tony was already in place so there was no need for him to be there. But at the last minute they asked him to join in. Phil said it was awful and he was just basically winging the whole time. He said he was very uncomfortable.

  • You know it's the 80s when even Jimmy Page is using an assload of chorus on his guitar

  • i have this concert on DVD but this song is not on it, why

  • @pablocruz420 the zep guys have always refused permission to include it because they thought the performance sucked

  • I didn't, and wasn't bashing Phil Collins at all. They rehearsed with one drummer and should have performed with one drummer. Zeppelin is not a 2 drummer band. Collins was at the height of his popularity and added by the producers, for what ever reason. He added nothing to the show except making the audio more impossible to listen to than it already was. I think he is a good drummer, but certainly not one of the best in "rock history". He is a much better singer/song writer than a drummer.

  • @wmjoca

go listen to some of his work with brand x and very early genesis, then we'll talk about his drumming ability....

  • @frk75 Being a great Jazz Fusion drummer does not necessarily translate to being a great rock drummer.

  • @wmjoca I think you have it the wrong way around regarding Phil's drumming and song writing abilities.

  • Phil Collins is hott!!!!!

  • PHIL COLLINS BLOWS. R.I.P. BONZO.

  • @tjrtherocksponge Are you kidding? QUEEN were perfection. Best Live Aid performance:)

  • 3:54 - 3:56 Jimmy's face rules!!! :D

  • Tony Thompson - One of the greatest session drummers of all time.

  • wow, Plant's voice was SHOT!

  • @fanofprotopic The entire performance was marred by problems. Plant couldn't hear himself thruout the entire performance. Jimmy's mix was too low & often couldn't hear himself either. At 2:13 he gets his guitar cord tangled around a mic stand. They rehearsed with Tony Thompson once & then were joined on stage by Phil Collins, who never played with them before & kept missing his cues. The appearance was such a "shambolic disaster" (In JImmy's own words), they refused to include it on the DVD

  • they couldnt get anyone other than the Sususudio guy to play drums

  • This was a charity concert - did you have to pay for it - no rehersal impromtu performances - get over it!

  • The fucking host ruined the intro to rock n roll damn man I thought this concert footage was about the music not your stupid comments

  • Worth watching for the debacle - I was mortified back in 1985 when I saw this but have gotten used to this over time. Still looks and sounds like a plane wreck but at least they showed up for a good cause. Jimmy claimed his guitar was tuned wrongly...Robert said his voice was shot from being on tour... Whatever...forward to the Page Plant era and see a big improvement. These guys were rusty no doubt about it...

  • I once heard that the reason they never got back together was because of this aweful performance. They realized that Bonham was just about irreplaceable. Phil Collins was making a lot of money in those days and should have been man enough to sit this one out. A young Jason Bonham would have been better than these 2

  • @wmjoca No offense, but bashing Phil for this performance is about on par with saying Plant sucks for the same reason. Phil Collins is one of the best drummers in rock history, as Plant is one of the best singers in rock history. This whole Live Aid debacle sucked but they shouldn't be condemned for it.

  • What the fuck is up with Jimmy's guitar, it sounds absolutely awful, like a maelstorm of reverb.

Plant seems to be the only one here with any sense of drive.

  • this is right after he married aunt weezies grand daghter and franks sister from metairie La.they used to play cards with my mother, not zep aunt weezie and frank, she looked good in cowby boots and a hippie dress, she was dating cokehead Al Copeland, the inventor of Popeyes chicken when she met jimmy page and dropped al like a box of cold chicken hahaah no shit check it out

  • probably the heron are the methadone who cares it might have been the stage set up his shit dont even sound right

  • I think that all of you critics should post your better live version on here so we can all take a listen to how good you are.

  • Led Zep rock but damn were they ropey at Live Aid - Planty's voice is fucked and Page is all over the place....and out of tune......John Paul Jones is fine and there's nothing wrong with Collins or Thompson!

  • Forget about the drumming......Page's guitar work is horrible.

  • they should have flown roger taylor over as well and dumped phil collins in the fuckin sea

  • @SuperPissflaps ...lol!!!...pissing myself laughing

  • How embarrassing is Plant? He's acting like a 13 year old boy at a wedding after his first drink. Forget Page and Collins here; Plant is singing and looking like a proper stupid cunt. Ladies and gentlemen we have a winner.

  • Wow this is Awful. Don't get me wrong im a Led Zeppelin fan but this....

  • Jimmy Page looked like shit and played like shit. It was a joke to have Phil Collins playing drums for them.

  • page master of the studio failure of the world live.

  • This is a reply to EVERYONE who doesn't have the story right. Here are the FACTS:

Tony was the drummer that rehearsed the show. Phil did not. When he got to the show, he wanted to sit in, making it a 2 drummer tribute to Bonham. Had he hung back and let Tony play the majority of the main drum parts, they would have sounded better. But I remember watching the whole performance on TV and seeing PC mess up in a lot of places. Taking nothing form him, but he simply wasn't prepared.

  • Why was Tony Thompson trying to outdrum Phil Collins? I know he's dead and all but...what a cunt. Ultimately, the only one who comes out of this with his credentials intact as Collins. Pagey blamed him for all sorts of things. At least Phil didn't turn up completely caned out of his skull. Planty, who at least had some experience of life after Zeppelin, is not at his best here.

  • phil was fine on the drums , why behave like spinal tap !

  • This is a bit strange..sounds like Jimmy is using a flanger pedal.

  • only in america would you have a presenter talking over the intro to
