I'm sick of all this fancy ass shit going on with all these super fast notes flying all over the place. Who gives a flying fuck? Yeah, it's good, it's tight, and it's fancy. I want to hear fucking solid shit. Drums aren't something that's all about the most notes or the most being played. At this point in time I say Phill Rudd could kick all of these guys asses.
@KurdtKobain09 That's true for situations when you're playing with other people. When you're by yourself playing a solo it's all about the goofiest tricks while still keeping your notes tight. When you're watching a single performer you don't wanna see them bust out baby's first rock beat.
@malcolmgetscrazy That is also true, but I'd like to hear more solid grooves than "tricky grooves". Look at ALL of the guitar centre drum offs, (except maybe the 90s ones) all except the special performances by famous drummers, they're all playing extremely fancy stuff. And it just bugs me a litte, you know? Like there are other grooves and feels to go on...It's like they don't think properly under the pressure of the competition. All performances have just seemed so plastic...
And its funny as soon as he started to use the double pedal, that automatically made him a monstrous drummer. And no it wasn't a better performance that the 2010 winner. If you really want to see a REAL Guitar Center champion, check out the 2008 winner. Thats how a drumming competition should be won.
Wait a minute....he was the winner??? The competition must have sucked!!! To be honest his performance was solid in terms of timing. Flawless timing, especially with the tricks he did do. But he plays a bit too soft. Its almost soft like he plays big band music. But the double pedal tells me he possibly plays rock but his hits were a little soft for rock music. Maybe it was the snare...sounded a little loose. His fills weren't defined. Meaning the hits on the fills sorta ran into each other.
This guy is an amazing drummer and also a great person. I met him a couple of years ago in Wilmington North Carolina while he was performing with his touring band Elm Tree. He is a very humble and non concieded drummer. I am please to have met him. Anyone that hates on Donnie is just envious of his ability to be a great drummer and will be one to remember in the years to come!
Just goes to show how subjective drumming is, like everything else. He does remind me of Peart in the sense that he has mind-blowing technical skill but the overall result leaves me somewhat cold and detached. I prefer the winner from the year before, who can't match this guy's chops but has an absolutely irresistible groove. But then I'm the sort who ranks Bonham and Moon higher than Peart; many take the opposite view.
damn, people are such trolls.....this guy is really good...like wtf do you want? monkeys falling out of the sky beat boxing? lots of rhythm variations, good showmanship, excellent chops, good variation with drum and or cowbell usage...he didnt spend the whole time just chopping out on the snare, it wasnt all just fast double bass....what more could you want? this was great!
@ironbound623 Although i love this guy, i respectfully disagree. This guy was more improvisational on the toms but the 2010 winner, in my opinion was more original on the drums, and during his beats he used the entire set. I'm not at all say this man didn't, just less in my opinion.
@metachozoite guitar center isn't really corps either, and he did play rudiments. I heard hertzas, roll variations (5 stroke, 7 stroke, 6 stroke, etc.) flams (I believe he was playing pataflaflas between the ride and hi hat at one point, but idk). You must be pretty one dimensional as a musician if rudiments are all you're looking for. Did I mention he played many diverse styles of drumming during this?
this dude is like on a level of drums i see alot with like john bon jimi chamberlin buddy ritch u know that whol groop thears no beter than this its like a master level no one is beter i mean yea some of thear styels of druming are more favorable to others but i think once you get wear theas guys are your prety mutch maxed out guitars a whol nother story u can never master that in a life time maby in two but not one
those doods aint got shit on zach hill,id like to see him and this dood have a drum off for a long time i thought zach hill was the best but idk man this dood is good
How the the hell does he go from multi-rods to sticks in one second, and put two stick out out and play with them with one handed all in a second too? He must have dropped one multi-rod and picked two out of the stick rack, put them in his left hand and had the other multi-rod in his right.?
This is probably the last drum off winner I can respect. He focused mainly on the technique, kept the tricks to a minimum, and what tricks he did usually affected the sound, so they had a purpose. Unlike the more recent ones. Oh look, he can bounce up and down, scream, do a gravity blast while laying on the drum, smile while doing ghost notes, and "shock" woah, he's doing rim clicks...while flipping the stick. :O...obvious sarcasm...
@VeryLargeRat Compared to the 2010 winner? come on now, there aren't that many tricks and most of the tricks he did actually did something that affected the sound as well.
@thessbmaster a stick juggle and a behind-the-back change the sound? the hi-hat thing was cool, but the others were for show. 1/3 isn't most.
Isaas Gil (2010) was a lot of show, yea. But Ramon Sampson (2009) was damn phenomenal, changing drum sounds with cymbals and towels, playing on the underside of the snare, and having the most authentic Latin feel I've ever seen in a drum-off video. Ever. And he was funny.
@VeryLargeRat Yes, behind the back can actually affect the sound. The fill and which toms are hit are affected. And regardless, 3 tricks isn't that much anyway. Ramon was pretty good, but I don't think funny belongs in a drum off. Some other people deserved to win that one in my opinion.
This guy i can definitely say deserved to win. some of the more recent drum off winners, in my opinion of course, really weren't very great compared to others.
They have to give people alcohol at these events man. you hear those people cheerin? I'd be right there with 'em If I had a few brews and, Yes, some jammin percussion
Maybe I was hard on Donnie he at least seems very humble unlike the other winners. my grip is against GC contest for letting the contest be hijacked by marching band type drummers who have a mentallity of practicing a handfull of patterns into the ground and neglect the music side. I don't won't to hear a bunch of rudiments performed perfectly like a thomas lang I won't someone to step out of the box and create somethings that sounds bad ass instead of coping someone else's material.
Nah, I disagree, that was just a nice expressive opening volley of singles and doubles etc. I liked it ... frankly I thought he built "tension" quite well with it. Some many times even the top pros start with a cheesy "snares off - sensitive touch" intro. It's almost expected. I really thought this was refreshing. He kept it on the soft side without boring me. I think you could even say it was a little on the"avant-guarde" side.
This contest has been turned into a drumline, pattern contest. Same licks used over and over with showmanship cheese mixed in. Thats why only a couple drummers have been able to land significant gigs afterwards. Ivan Garcia should have won he is a musician who plays drums
@badmotorscooter1000 , you know why he won, this guy can make ties between different pieces of his solo, he can fill in the gaps with a little roll and get right back to his beat and if you hadnt noticed, all drummers a musicians and music is basically made up of patterns and fills
