@bianquzao1937 Yes! If it was not blocked by Chinese Communist, we already achieved self-governance with Westminister democracy as early as 1950s. Read more history books first!
UK is great, China is...OK, I guest. But real Hong Kong people should have no nationality at all. We, as the citizens of an international city, should be the true international citizens.
Those two girls at 02:55 were pretty especially when they felt sad. I know the reason, but I feel like... comforting them and telling them everything is going to be alright.
After the end of British Rule in HK, TaiWan is the last paradise for Chinese. People in Taiwan, hold on, don't give up yourself to the dictators in mainland China!台灣加油,不要向共產黨獨裁者屈服。
@Anthonysokw Not think so - Britain signed UN Charter which forbids any countries to take back former colonies which already independent or return to rightful sovereign mother country.
The Chinese already declared HK part of their sovereign territory and promise to defend it if attacked.
It looks like Britain will not be back in HK for ever.
The only way for HK people to gain freedom is to declare themselves independent or go to Taiwan which will not be likely for long time to come.
@KingdomofHongkie I would agree with you since UN charter forbids anyone regain their former colonies or territories as colonies again after independence achieved.
But if Hong Kong successfully achieve independence in the future, does Hong Kongers still want the Queen back as head of state with a prime minister or have own republic with the president as head of state.
Either way, I am sure Hong Kong will be certain to join the Commonwealth as a former British colony.
@DavBlc7 It's more psychological for retaining UK monarchy as figurehead of HK which certainly gives more confidence and recognition from the public as it suggests the inheritance of pre-1997 good governance. But the key point is to earn the independence from the mainland, until when Honkies could truly govern themselves.
@KingdomofHongkie Earn independance from the mainland would be more difficult cos more Chinese continue to settle in HK to make sure HK would not get independance or stop the Brits from taking back HK.
The problem is that HK are Chinese sovereign territory and have right to defend it. China had strong sized PLA and as long as the PLA stays in HK they would not given independence.
The Chinese said they will not give up HK because historically it belongs to China right from it's founding.

@DavBlc7 The Chinese you mentioned is Chinese Communist Govt. Usually Westerners quite understandably take it for granted that there is no difference between China in cultural perspective and Communist China. HK before 1841 belonged to Qing (Imperial China) which has little cultural ties with Communist Chinese nowadays.
@Anthonysokw Not likely cos of UN Charter forbidding any colonial masters to take back former colonies without the wishes of local people or local government.
Another reason is that the Chinese Communist won't let HK go.
Hong Kong people are to run Hong Kong? No yet, we even don't have a chance to vote for our own Chief Execuitve. Not 800 peoples represent us, we want everyone in Hong Kong can vote.
@mannecyberguy Because the people where happy in being in the system they were living in. In being a different side of China, Macau was a tradepost for centuries and cultural infusion was natural and made it unique. Now it stopped and is being washed by a huge amound of the population that is overwhelmingly from the mainland and is becoming the new culture of Macau. And that is fine really, it's making Macau more chinese, but Macau ceased to be the unique place it was for 500 years.
@jonaspv I speak for Macau because I am portuguese and I know a lot of people from Macau: those who stayed there and cope, and those who left and that includes portuguese, ethnic chinese and macanese (unique culture of ethnic/linguistic mix). Of those who left, some went to Australia some to America or Japan, many came back to Portugal and I know a lot of people from Macau who consider themselves as portuguese, and many of those who say that are ethnic asians. And I consider them my countrymen.
Hong Kong belonged to "Republic of China" but since they are dying and forget where they are doing. Hong Kong should become independent until the motherland's fighting spirit is restored.
PRC''s barbaric culture should not spread to HK who retained authentic Chinese culture.
@stevengenejin And don't forget, that enclave was never about military competition, Portugal never conquered it, China gave it to us for erradicating piracy in the South China Seas in the early 16th century. And China didn't have to invade to get it back, why don't you pick on Britain and all the others for the Boxer Rebellion? I get the feeling that many put down Portugal because it is smaller and weaker than the ones you truly want to speak against.
The British Empire was the best thing in the world, in 500years it transformed the world from a land where people died at 40, kings ruled the land and the people were poor, to a land where we have technology, good lifes, healthcare... Without the British Empire there would be no America, no Canada, no Australia, no New Zealend... And most importantly there would be no freedom in the world ,the British empire brought the world together, to what it is today.
There would on been no slavery, no genocide, no apartheid, no forced assimilation. The original inhabitants of of America, Canada and Australia would still be everywhere on their homeland. This is the other side of the coin. You can introduce technology and ideas through cultural exchange as the case with Japan. But the British chose war instead.
The British went to war with china because their emperor would not do trade with them. keep in mind the British did respect the Chinese greatly for their great history/accomplishments. Chinese leadership was horrible and the emperor arrogant and it caused war. Where the British could not barter with words they would barter with guns opium and silver. Anglo-Americans did not recognize indigenous Americans as cultured like Asian countries and considered them savages which is not true of course.
By the end of Qing dynasty it was corrupt beyond help. The Emperor made a last ditch effort to try to curb the corruption by banning opium, but apparently trying to stop the flow of drugs offended the British so much they started 2 wars. And what they did to the native Americans was worse. from what it looks like is that the US is picking up where the British left off.
Chinese luxury items are what the British wanted but the differences from japan are that the British had trade restrictions in china big ones. the only thing the British could trade was silver, you see how that could be a problem as they couldn't trade their own goods and market them to the average population like they could in japan. The wars where more about free trade than anything. but what did the Chinese want opium. not saying this was a good it was terrible after that war started
@assmonkey626 Great Britain should have kept Hong Kong Island, but it would not be a smart move as Kowloon and the New Territiories were to be returned to the Mainland.
@danielshearer: your comment is nonsense, Chinese culture is the best in the world, we have 5000 thounsand years and lasts until now, when we have record of our history, you British still lived on the tree and have sex with monkey. And cilviliation of Rome is not existed now, it shows the culture is not good compare to chinese cilvilization. The Chinese Song danasty, our GDP reached 80% of the world's GDP. Even today's American Cannot reach this level.
@woshitianshihahahaha Please, before you talk about civilization, stop shitting in the street, spitting out of windows, and pulling people's hair to get on the bus. Monkeys are more civilized than mainland Chinese.
@danielshearer then what difference would that be compared communist. you dictate others, regardless of life expectancy and wealth, freedom is what people call out for. and that is why people will defy their masters.
modern day example : ireland. british presence has caused chaos for them.
a king and queen placed on a throne are related to a king who once raped and pillaged lands to acquire their power. if i took away your beer and cigerette so you would have a longer life would it be fair
@danielshearer Do the Americans have representation in the parliament during the British rule? Democracy came to USA, after gaining independence from Britain, and it was them who really introduce it to the world. Though they might mostly be of British and French descendant. Still it was the USA who propagated freedom and liberty not the British Empire. British itself was an imperial colonialist tyrant
@Anubayan7 You have no idea what democracy is, as all other americans. We Europeans have introduced it to the world, in 3000 BC in athens, read some books american, we have perfect-ionized it and we have introduced it to the world, as also in the USA. Look into the EU, that is how democracy works american, not in your cowboy style....you americans can not compare yourself with us europeans, we are the only cradle of the western culture, you are not, when you pass, we will be still here.
@andresunny70 Actually Democracy predates Athens and existed in various forms on the Indian sub continent several centuries before, including things like atheism- see carvaka's and also your numbering system. Not all things great are European.
@andresunny70 That might be where it started. But it was not Europeans who propagated it. The Greek Empire was a Monarchy. The Greeks were alter conquered by the Roman Empire. Basically Europeans never propagated democracy before.
The British, French, Spanish, Portuguese, German, and Italian Empires are all imperial colonialists and exploiters. None of them introduce voting rights for the people.
I don't think you'll still be there. Your population are now aging.
@danielshearer we should also thank the child rapist, serial killers and other horrible people because without them doing what they did we would not have these stiff laws in place today.

The handover of HK was significant because it marked the irreversible end of the worst thing that happened to mankind in history -- the British Empire.
Anyway, when you are powerful whatever you say is right. But remember, you can only qualify to represent your Queen. Do not even think that you are democratic guard. Just get out of Hong Kong and enjoy your retirement at England.
British came in Hong Kong with force, not with the wills of the Hong Kong and China people. As you only might see those buildings, roads and parks in Hong Kong are so beautiful and so modernized, but within the 5 million Hong Kong -nose, do you know how many of them were living in the skid rows? How many of them had to work 10 to 12 hours each week and at least 6 days a week in the pass?
Although British had built Hong Kong from a poor fishing village to a world famous city, Hong Kong actually lost its dignity to the world and to its mother land China.
but it seems that the chinese way is much more effective than the british way, china was industrialized within only 30 years and now it is the second largest economy after the US and the world's largest exporter of goods, it also has the world's largest foreign exchange reserves, and the size of the economy is indeed very important! being a part of the world's biggest booming economy , hongkong
and has higher growth rates! Under Chinese rule Hongkong will have a much better future. And the most important point: Hongkongers are ethnic Chinese and not British!Of course i hope that also every British person who remained in Hongkong still identifies himself with the city and helps to make the city even more prosporous.
No my friend it was a great day! A great day for the Chinese Nation and HongKong. Since the handover, Hongkong's economy grew 7% every year and the standard of living is much higher than 1997 and before!
Stop dreaming of your "British Empire". It's history now!
I know that, "u idiot". But nothing like the recent neon explosion of display and bad taste that is so characteristic of 90's/2000's China. It is growing at a concerning and explosive rate and it is not that good for the people who live there.
While China endured mass murder under Mao (Slaughtering more than Nazi Germany & Imperial Japan combined) Britain protected HK while the Red Guarded terrorists bombed us & the CCP threatened us right until 97.
Patten fought for us like no one before or since.
Now under China we are being 'reintegrated', our nascent culture slowly being destroyed & our rights being rolled back. We have very little to look forward to except to sell more of our soul for money
@therepublicofHK I think when you talked about 'Patten fought for us like no one before or since.' you forgot to ask yourself the question: Why was the last governor so keen on promoting so called 'democracy' and to reform the legislative council? Why haven't the previous governors done the same thing? You cannot deny that this is a political move against China. No doubt it was highly suspicious it.
@therepublicofHK 'Now under China we are being 'reintegrated', our nascent culture slowly being destroyed & our rights being rolled back. We have very little to look forward to except to sell more of our soul for money' There are things to look forward to, its time to stop looking back. Living standards are improving, instead of complaining about how China has changed us- perhaps its time to ask ourselves something: Can we change Chnia? Are we not be a model for other Chinese cities?
@therepublicofHK No that murder you claimed never happend. The west made up such a data just because they need an enemy. Why don't you count how many Chinese were killed in "Boxer Rebillion". Don't pretend to be the Chinese, you don't deserve that. Again all you care is to bring China down with rather stupid strategies. The Americans are even using the strategies which Chinese done for three thousands years. Your soul is sold already, for becoming the slave of the west. Shame on you.
Prosperous... like the Chinese made China prosperous? I think there are more Chinese in China to make China prosperous, however they all swarm to Hong Kong for a better life.

Mm..... A lot of British racists, opium dealers, thieves and colonists are talking about "human rights" and "morality". What else can be more hypocratic and disgusting? Do you really think you opium dealers and colonists have ANY moral credibility to mention these pharases to Chinese?
I don't think, infact I know that Nobody from the UK that are here on youtube ever had Anything to do with the Opium Wars, and had nothing to do with colonialism so your comments are irrelevent.
The British built up Hong Kong. If you are Russian, then look at your own nations greed, taking over everything, ( the USSR). The Russians had no right to spread their communist filth all over Eastern Europe in the post war years.
When evil British colonists and racists dumped opium on Chinese nation and used its evil military power to force drugs on Chinese people, China was NOT ruled by communist party! Now, these same evil drug deals, colonists, and racists are talking about "democracy", "human rights", bla bla bla, to Chinese and other peace-loving people in the world, how ridiculous and disgusting they are! Chinese know history including the evil British drug crime history. Shut up, British hypocracy!
check out the economic growth of HongKong after handover then u can open u fucking ignorance mouth....
Colony = backward and Immoral
HongKong= China
that's why HongKong dont need to pay any tax to the CCP government and thay have their own government beside CCP in HongKong...we believe HongKong is our family member in this big family of China.
I completely agree with you Nathan. I was in Hong Kong in 1980, where I got to ride in a red double decker bus for the very first time. I loved the place for what it was, a proud British Colony.
i was born in hong kong in 1979 but i don't like being a colony, whether its british colony or french ... i am chinese so i want to have democracy in hong kong and are proud that hk has returned to china.
i am chinese and of course i want hk's return to china. i don't agree the 1 party rulte in china so i hope one day there will be democracy in china as well.
i support democracy and of course i don't want to be a british colony. being a colony means there is no democracy. was christ pattern elected? No...
at least hk people will be able to elect the chief executive in 2016.
yes, hope is required because china is still a one party state. however, when times come, people will fight for democracy in china. because democracy is the only way to protect people.
My wife went to a whole lot of parties in 1997 in which the local HKers celebrated the Handover. LOTS of parties.
Which isn't, of course, to say that she and her fellow HKers weren't nervous-- they were-- or that they hated the British-- generally, they did not. But it's worked out well, and I sure wouldn't live anywhere else!
Just imagine, if our pigs can think, they (pigs) will start farming human beings, since humans can built better shelter and getter food better than us pigs, farming humans will give us pigs a more prospers and better life.
But be glad, those school kids (prefer to be pigs) and even think like that, pig farmers are so relief that good job their pigs can't think like us human beings, so we can continue farming pigs.

The handover of HK marked the end of the colonial age of the British Empire. UK is now once again what it used to be -- a small island on the edge of the world map that is utterly unimportant. .
'a small island on the edge of the world map that is utterly unimportant. . ' - yes, only 5th largest economy in the world, nuclear power capable of destroying every major chinese city, 2nd most powerful NATO army, permanent member of the security council, worlds financial capital, only EU member with full rights of veto, and so on.
Apart from all THAT, you mean?
And now, what is Hong Kong? A tiny capitalist enclave shackled to a communist corpse, begging and bribing so it isn't crushed. Ok?
A few corrections. The UK has no ability to destory any of Chinese cities. If it dares to wage a nuclear war toward China, it got nuked and wiped off by Chinese immediately.
Uk definitely is not on the edge of world map in terms of politics and economics. But it is no longer an empire. Has it not the SPECIAL relationship with the USA, its impact on world affairs is very limited.
Hilarious parsing, I think your translator needs a quick smack. Actually I'm not british, so my pride is unaffected.
'A few corrections. The UK has no ability to destory any of Chinese cities.'
Actually, yes it does. Press a button, missiles go WHOOSH, 30-45 minutes later big mushrooms start sprouting along the chinese coast. 400-500 million dead people. Game over man, GAME OVER. China has no anti-nuke defense of any kind. This is a fact. Live with it.
China can send humans into space, the same technology enables Chinese ICBMs penetrate all the current defence systems.
The last time i check wiki, the UK only got very limited sea based ICBMs. And it is even not independent.
China can stand first wave of 1000 nukes attack and is able to give destructive counter attack either by its submarines or land based missiles. How many nukes can UK stand before it is sunk to the sea?
Yes, they did it 45 years after the soviets. That means you're almost HALF A CENTURY behind the rest of the world. You missile technology is equally primitive, god only knows had bad you guidance technology is, it would be lucky if they could hit anywhere in London. Accuracy matters, even with nukes. And as for Chinese subs...ROFL. They are known as 'coffin ships'.
Why in the world are you two arguing about THIS? Anyway you slice it, Britain vs. China in a war would go very badly for Britain. And beyond that, the two countries have pretty good relations, so it's a moot point.
And anyway you slice it, Britain didn't have an option to remain in HK. Their position couldn't be defended militarily OR diplomatically. This was widely known as long ago as the 1950s. Viz, the title of Richard Hughes's 1967 book, *Borrowed Place, Borrowed Time*.

@Anthonysokw WHY??
mannecyberguy 1 year ago
@Anthonysokw Not think so - Britain signed UN Charter which forbids any countries to take back former colonies which already independent or return to rightful sovereign mother country.
The Chinese already declared HK part of their sovereign territory and promise to defend it if attacked.
It looks like Britain will not be back in HK for ever.
The only way for HK people to gain freedom is to declare themselves independent or go to Taiwan which will not be likely for long time to come.
DavBlc7 1 year ago
@DavBlc7 We would prefer independence.
KingdomofHongkie 1 year ago
@KingdomofHongkie I would agree with you since UN charter forbids anyone regain their former colonies or territories as colonies again after independence achieved.
But if Hong Kong successfully achieve independence in the future, does Hong Kongers still want the Queen back as head of state with a prime minister or have own republic with the president as head of state.
Either way, I am sure Hong Kong will be certain to join the Commonwealth as a former British colony.
DavBlc7 1 year ago 4
@DavBlc7 It's more psychological for retaining UK monarchy as figurehead of HK which certainly gives more confidence and recognition from the public as it suggests the inheritance of pre-1997 good governance. But the key point is to earn the independence from the mainland, until when Honkies could truly govern themselves.
KingdomofHongkie 1 year ago

@jonaspv WHY should it be Britain in Hong Kong, and Portugal in Macau? Give me, IF you can, one reason why it should be like that.
mannecyberguy 7 months ago
@mannecyberguy Because the people where happy in being in the system they were living in. In being a different side of China, Macau was a tradepost for centuries and cultural infusion was natural and made it unique. Now it stopped and is being washed by a huge amound of the population that is overwhelmingly from the mainland and is becoming the new culture of Macau. And that is fine really, it's making Macau more chinese, but Macau ceased to be the unique place it was for 500 years.
jonaspv 7 months ago
@jonaspv I speak for Macau because I am portuguese and I know a lot of people from Macau: those who stayed there and cope, and those who left and that includes portuguese, ethnic chinese and macanese (unique culture of ethnic/linguistic mix). Of those who left, some went to Australia some to America or Japan, many came back to Portugal and I know a lot of people from Macau who consider themselves as portuguese, and many of those who say that are ethnic asians. And I consider them my countrymen.

Balencian 3 months ago

But the British chose war instead.
saint666 2 years ago
Not to mention WW1+WW2 was the cumulative climax to the era of European Colonialism.
saint666 2 years ago
The British went to war with china because their emperor would not do trade with them. keep in mind the British did respect the Chinese greatly for their great history/accomplishments. Chinese leadership was horrible and the emperor arrogant and it caused war. Where the British could not barter with words they would barter with guns opium and silver. Anglo-Americans did not recognize indigenous Americans as cultured like Asian countries and considered them savages which is not true of course.
assmonkey626 1 year ago
By the end of Qing dynasty it was corrupt beyond help. The Emperor made a last ditch effort to try to curb the corruption by banning opium, but apparently trying to stop the flow of drugs offended the British so much they started 2 wars. And what they did to the native Americans was worse. from what it looks like is that the US is picking up where the British left off.
saint666 1 year ago
Chinese luxury items are what the British wanted but the differences from japan are that the British had trade restrictions in china big ones. the only thing the British could trade was silver, you see how that could be a problem as they couldn't trade their own goods and market them to the average population like they could in japan. The wars where more about free trade than anything. but what did the Chinese want opium. not saying this was a good it was terrible after that war started
assmonkey626 1 year ago
yes war is perfectly reasonable to solve trade disagreements.

Anubayan7 1 year ago
@Anubayan7 You have no idea what democracy is, as all other americans. We Europeans have introduced it to the world, in 3000 BC in athens, read some books american, we have perfect-ionized it and we have introduced it to the world, as also in the USA. Look into the EU, that is how democracy works american, not in your cowboy style....you americans can not compare yourself with us europeans, we are the only cradle of the western culture, you are not, when you pass, we will be still here.
andresunny70 1 year ago
@andresunny70 Actually Democracy predates Athens and existed in various forms on the Indian sub continent several centuries before, including things like atheism- see carvaka's and also your numbering system. Not all things great are European.
AresRoar 1 year ago
@andresunny70 That might be where it started. But it was not Europeans who propagated it. The Greek Empire was a Monarchy. The Greeks were alter conquered by the Roman Empire. Basically Europeans never propagated democracy before.
The British, French, Spanish, Portuguese, German, and Italian Empires are all imperial colonialists and exploiters. None of them introduce voting rights for the people.
I don't think you'll still be there. Your population are now aging.

The handover of HK marked the end of the colonial age of the British Empire. UK is now once again what it used to be -- a small island on the edge of the world map that is utterly unimportant. .
lordawesome46 2 years ago
'a small island on the edge of the world map that is utterly unimportant. . ' - yes, only 5th largest economy in the world, nuclear power capable of destroying every major chinese city, 2nd most powerful NATO army, permanent member of the security council, worlds financial capital, only EU member with full rights of veto, and so on.
Apart from all THAT, you mean?
And now, what is Hong Kong? A tiny capitalist enclave shackled to a communist corpse, begging and bribing so it isn't crushed. Ok?
maureenOWW 2 years ago 2
A few corrections. The UK has no ability to destory any of Chinese cities. If it dares to wage a nuclear war toward China, it got nuked and wiped off by Chinese immediately.
Uk definitely is not on the edge of world map in terms of politics and economics. But it is no longer an empire. Has it not the SPECIAL relationship with the USA, its impact on world affairs is very limited.

Are u a dreamer?
or just being ignorant?
China can send humans into space, the same technology enables Chinese ICBMs penetrate all the current defence systems.
The last time i check wiki, the UK only got very limited sea based ICBMs. And it is even not independent.
China can stand first wave of 1000 nukes attack and is able to give destructive counter attack either by its submarines or land based missiles. How many nukes can UK stand before it is sunk to the sea?
bayonet2 2 years ago
