umm no, the media made breakdancing popular by turning it into a cheap gimmick.power moves are nice but too many "bboys" hide behind power because they haven't truly mastered elementary moves and they can't rock a beat, in other words they can't dance. its not just being able to do the motion, but to do it rhythmically that includes power. there r power heads who have mastered and respect footwork and toprock, i.e. Storm, so i always get suspicious when people hate on footwork and toprock

it was more so because breaking was for the gangs to settle disputes without violence back then AS WELL and so battle came to be but bboys essentially DANCE TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES just like any other dancer BUT by having battles its another system of seeing who's better or who's best and so on just like any other dance competition so the same question can just be asked for any other dance style, in breaking battles just occur more often so it's not JUST breakers who battle

to see who's best or better, if you can't compete then how would you know if you're good or if you suck and need more work or practice? just like it is to compete for jobs so the employer can see who's better than who and the one that's best is employed or awarded something for winning -- the dancing between gangs actually did help a bit because it prevented SOME violence when there wasn't any need for violence, graffiti was used in the same way for competing in territory

i breakdancer is someone who runs around throwing power and moves and just dose it cuz the musics on. a bboy can play with the music hit beats and all the other streams in the music horns snares etc. and they have a style of doing things all to there own. they dont do moves they make there own.

a b-boy is what the original, hip-hop term is called for someone who dances like that. The "b-boy" stands for "break boy" or "breaker boy" because in the old days, the dj would play music but only during the "break" part of the song when the lyrics would stop. But the mainstream media in the 80s started calling them "breakdancers" and marketed it to the rest of the world as "breakdancing". But the real, original term is "b-boy". That's the difference.
