You do other things than just fighting, but you are a part of the military. Like in the real world military, you are not allowed to sell your jet, or ignore your mission to land your jet up in the mountain to mine. As a military pilot, you are expected to complete your mission, and that's what you do in this game - complete missions. But the missions are not always just to shoot things. They involve recon and stuff like that.

@BlaseVonB Freelancer is better than this in my opinion. It's also not a lie. FL IS good. It's not some complicated crap like X3. Graphics were decent, story was quite good, but multiplayer with Discovery mods and alike just won the battle over Freespace 2. But I do have to credit FS2 for being successful relatively to its release date.
For some people FS2 might be the greatest space sim, but for me it plain sucks, since it lacks CRITICAL features for me to call it a good space sim. I simply don't like it.
Vanilla Freelancer doesn't have cap-ships available for player aswell, but this is EASILY fixed by mods, while in case of FS2 it's nigh impossible (similar to as it's impossible for FL modding to produce flawless beam weapons).
@ThinBear4 I completely agree with you. The discovery mod on FL was the best thing that i've ever played on multiplayer. Until Zero(the admin on one of the servers) decided to ban one of my bank(storage of credits) characters was deleted for toying around with cheats on it. I decided to quit after that...
@ronaldli5 To be honest, Discovery mod is not as good as it used to be. One of cool things about it was that among additional content it added, there were ships from Homeworld game. Then, in one of the recent updates, some moron decided they should gradually remove all those ships from different games and replace them with unique models fitting Freelancer's style. A fatal mistake in my opinion. I deleted discovery the moment I heard they're removing Homeworld ships (not all, but still).

When I found out one of the cool sleek and stealthy looking ships called 'Raven's Talon' was from Star Wars, I immediately sold the ship away, because I never liked things being copied from something else. i recently tried to play this on my pc and even in compatibility mode for 95 or 98/Me it doesn't run smoothly when explosions and many ships are in the screen??? the only thing thats really gets me angry is the ai in fs1 aaaarrreee waayy smarter than the ones in fs2. especailly the dragons, they way more skillfull.
oh i used to play the original for the longest. a while ago they offered these legendary games in 2 packs for 10 dollars each. this was in one. man that game was good and i beat it too :(
if anyone still likes these kinds of space games freelancer still has over a 100 differant servers running , game is cheap and you can get a mod manager to turn on and off any modd loaded in mod manager,it will hold alot of huge 100meg mods, and you can run your own server from the basic game- check out you tube for freelancer

I loved that game! I didnt even own a real version of it just a demo but it was still awesome! I wish they still made some good videogames like freespace.
Despite it being as old as it is, released in '99 I have to say this game is probably the best space sim ever. Space combat in Star Wars Galaxies is amazing but is not nearly as action packed as this, and it is more quest based and MMO combat, there isnt really a storyline or reacting NPCs with voice acting like in this game. Its a shame I lost my disc and broke my joystick, but Freespace 2 entertained me for so so so long.
Unfortunately the game is without the advanced graphical updates, as I forgot to activate them before recording the gameplay. I'll make a new one at a later date with the "new look".

Unfortunately the game is without the advanced graphical updates, as I forgot to activate them before recording the gameplay. I'll make a new one at a later date with the "new look".
