  • Hey Scotty. You made that clutch job look real simple. Do I have to do anything special when installing the new clutch as in how do I know that I aligned it right?

  • Hey scotty, I have a 1989 toyota pickup that every time the shifter goes into third it pops out but all the other gears are fine what is the cause?

  • i dont have to do all the work to replace a clutch in a s2000 rear wheel drive tho right?

  • @eyelesskiller8 yes, yours is a much easier job.

  • Every clutch manufacturer that I have talked with in addition to the factory service manual says to have the flywheel resurfaced, especially if there are visible hotspots. Also I'd probably be putting new gear oil in the transmission when i did that. Its likely the oil in the transmission has used its metal package up by the time the clutch has worn out.

Awesome video, makes a daunting task much more manageable for someone who hasn't done it.

  • great videos... wish we were neighbors... i could learn alot from you....

  • Every time I see your videos I wish I lived in the same state you do. Should I think about towing my cars from VA to you to repair them? lol.

  • just a tip, also inspect the pilot bearing. that happened to my S-10. the clutch was in decent shape but i replaced it anyway.

  • so if i have an automatic tranny changing clutch won't help?

  • @bmwilson02 they are different types of transmissions, automatics don't use such a clutch inside.

  • @scottykilmer I understand bmwilson02s' question and not to be rude or say your wrong your right in that context BUT their are 'clutches' INSIDE an automatic tranny, not a 'manual clutch' that uses the shifter and pedal and connects between engine and tranny for a standard or manual tranny, these automatic tranny 'clutches' automatically engage and disengage to shift gears, i know you were keeping it simple for the answer but Im just saying

  • hey scotty, i have a 2001 ford explorer sport 2door single, a the clutch needs to be replace, would this same procedure work to replace mine?

  • @armandorome yours is actually easier, as it's rear wheel drive, less work to do.

  • so i seem another video on how to replace a clutch on a 04 mustang, but they use a car lift and took out the exhaust and the transmission, so do you know if there is a way change the clutch like you did it? if not how much would you charge to replace the clutch?

  • @shadow1up that's a rear wheel drive car, this is a front wheel drive car. Each are done differently.

  • @scottykilmer damn, well if you need a volunteer to do a 'how to replace a clutch on a rear end wheel vehicle, i volunteer my ride. don't think twice

  • x.x im a total newbie and i get about 1/3rd of this, is there a more indepth video? like one for dummies? XP

  • @ILikeWeatherGuy It would be a long, boring video as the job can take 5-6 hours. Get a cheap manual like a haynes manual, they are pretty good.

  • hey scotty i have a 2004 cavalier that as of today started doing a slight winding sound when i push in the clutch and rev the engine. i was wondering would that be the clutch pressure plate or throwout bearing? i was thinking the throwout bearing because i thought if it was the clutch it would grind hard and be louder. what do you think?

  • @atmiller91011 it could be either, but ya gotta pull the tranny to fix either, so I'd leave it until it had running problems.

  • @scottykilmer ok thanks

  • You make it look far too easy.

  • hey scotty, i just bought a 1977 280z. its been sitting for 10 years. and i drained all the fluids and replaced filters and plugs. but i need a battery to crank it. but can i just use my 1992 camaro battery to see if it works? and one of the spark plug cable from the center of that thing where their all hooked up to is missing. someone told me it connects to the cylenoid or something like that. can it still crank without it? how much are those thing?

  • @MyCamaroIsa92 the battery should work, but be sure to get the spark plug wire that's missing put on first to get it to go. watch my video "

Getting a car that's been sitting for years running" for more tips.

  • Best clutch video on YouTube. What a legend hahaha

  • hey scotty thnks for the vids, i was wonder were you buy the pump to put the oil back to the gearbox? thanks

  • @juanyboo12345 auto zone, costs 6 bucks

  • dan from australia hear, you a champion love your videos great work

  • damn. i have so much homework but these videos are so awesome.

  • Hey Scotty what's this juddering when i lift my foot off the clutch is that part of the symptoms of a slipping clutch (pretty sure its slipping no thrust when going uphill)

  • @troyjarman yes, they do that when thin.

  • I bet this guy can do a transmission in like an hour. Haha one hour transmission or its free!!

  • this hase happened to my car will it be possible to drive it about 10miles to get it into a garage?

  • @mydog60000 if you can drive carefully and don't have to go up any mountains.

  • thank you :)

  • Hey Scotty thanks for the videos. The seal for the shaft that connects my shifter into the gearbox is leaking but I don't know the name of the seal, any one know? Thank for any help... Just a small leak, but annoying.

  • @themidnightdaylight just tell a dealer parts department you need the shifter seal.

  • I also have removed the drive shaft, tranny, and clutch

  • I am changing a clutch and throw out barring in a Pontiac firebird 1989 5.0 305fi manual shift....any suggestions of something that i might not know. anything special that i need to know? special tools that I need to rent? I have purchased the clutch kit and a new flywheel

  • @lori914 yes, have patience when you do it and use good jack stands. don't work in the mud either, use a concrete floor.

  • aren't there gaskets on mating surface of the tranny/engine? any torque values? ur jokes lol i like ur vids

  • @carsnwomen91 no gaskets, that's just metal to metal. I get em tight by hand, no way you can get a torque wrench in many of those spots anyway, no working room

  • wow ive never tried to do a clutch on a front wheel drive car, sure looks tight for space.driveshafts are an added ass, i only work on bmws, i just have to disconnect the prop. But scotty can make anything easy with his super DIY

  • Enjoy your videos Scotty. Might I suggest disconnecting the battery as well. Particularly when removing a starter. Maybe also make mention of the pilot bearing/bushing.

  • Thank you Scotty, from deepest darkest Devon, UK

  • scotty that is a new world record for changing a clutch disk waw you are awesome

  • Hello Scotty I´M about to buy a 2002 jeep liberty 4 cil. manual transmission, I´ll like to pick up your toughts on that suv, thanks for all of your help is much appreciatted. Regards

  • just noticed a girl is recording your videos..

  • hey scotty, my 98 integra is grinding goin into 2nd and wont go into 5th is tht the clutch or the tranny? but its smooth through the rest of the gears

  • @mynamesjiimmy69 those trannies are notorious for eating up fifth gear, my bet's on the transmission having internal problems on fifth gear cluster.

  • @mynamesjiimmy69 my 00 accord did the same thing, so did my friends 01 prelude.... its not the clutch (although when you replace the transmission you should get a new clutch) its something with a washer inside the guts of the transmission. if your brave you can pull the trans apart and replace it but i just got a new trans for like 400 bucks that had that procedure already done to it

  • when do you know when is time to change the clutch?

  • @shadow1up it starts to slip when you accelerate, or makes horird noises.

  • @scottykilmer thanks, i will definitely check that out, because my car makes these like grinding noises but i don't know if is just the wheels(i have 20" rims and my car is very low) or if is the actual clutch that's making all the noises.

  • @scottykilmer and the lovely smell of roasting clutch

  • I wish you were my dad my brother hell even my neighbor. You are a good man Sir.

  • Next make a video on how to fix all the oil and coolant leaks on the engine.

  • thanx a lot Mr. Kilmer , this video helped me a lot !

  • baha good video. Except this way of doing a clutch wont work for every vehicle. Looks like Honda's are easier that cobalts FML... I gotta drop the under carriage, and remove the tranny completely from under the car. Wish I had a lift available..

  • @CudaJoe85 yea, some manufacturers are complete A holes.

  • I watched this and I think I'm going to cry... My mustang needs a new clutch smh.

  • Awesome, video! I thought it was funny too

  • My Focus is living a hard clutch life. Ha it may be time soon.

  • What are all those red bottles?

  • @ahausheer old oil bottles with dirty oil in em, I take em every once in a while to a recycling center and then reuse em for more dirty oil.

  • good work scotty keep up the good work you must have mighty big balls

  • God that motors dirty ;)

  • @TheDataZoo hey, it's a dirty world.

  • Good reference vid but its actually a lot harder than he makes it seem especially in a rear wheel drive compact car. (ie my lexus is 300).

  • Your an Animal Scotty!

  • Mister you are the best kind of professional---love what he does and share his knowledge.

  • @activeonecn Yes, but still some people whine here and complain. go figure

  • Scotty, if I push the clutch down and try to shift but it won't catch in any gears at all, the clutch is bad, correct?

  • @TheCrimsonStarX either the clutch of the hydraulics operating it.

  • great video. kinda funny/weird.lol

  • this guy makes me feel like i can change a clutch in under 5 minutes. Awesome video!

  • I got a question scotty, today I was doing a emergency peel out on a right turn and all of sudden I heard a weird sound and now that car doesn't drive. Could I have messed up the clutch or the flywheel?

  • @CaptainSaul18 could have broken lots of things, first check to see if a CV axle or joint has broken, and pray it's that. but if you can't see anything broken under the car, odds are you broke the clutch.

  • @scottykilmer Well, I found out I broke the clutch, So me and my buddy replace it its was very worn out... But another question, The clutch pedal feels a bit sticky hardly,. Is this normal because the clutch is new?

  • @CaptainSaul18 you might have to bleed the clutch pedal via slave cylinder. I seen my friend do it at work on a Santa Fe. It had hose connected to the brake master cylinder, and I believe it is operated by hydraulic fluid, brake fluid in this case. If you removed it while replacing the clutch chances are there is air in the system. You might have to get your friend to pump the clutch 3 times and hold while you open the bleeder valve. Scotty, if you can confirm this process/diagnoses?

  • @istishhadi I bled the master cylinder, well I drive a ford focus with Single cam engine and I notice it doesn't have a slave cylinder, i couldn't find it. Its was a pain in the butt to pull the tranny off so I guess ill have to drive it that way. I got used to it.

  • Over-revving an unloaded engine - that's not very good for them.

Bloody fantastic series of video's though!

  • thank you! love how u can make fun!

  • but the rear main wasnt replaced and flywheel wasnt turned and dont forget to mention the break in period somepeople just dont understand new parts need to be broken in to work properly ive always been told 500 miles and its good and in those 500 DO NOT drive it hard

  • @xXxchipperchopperxXx yea, lots of things weren't changed. You don't change the whole car when taking it apart, only the worn parts.

  • @scottykilmer yes i realize this but taking a gasketed part off usually ruins the gasket therefore it should b replaced and ive never heard of a case were the flywheel doesnt need turning

  • @xXxchipperchopperxXx well, I've done tons without touching the flywheel that went for years, I only change em when scored.

  • @scottykilmer You don't think that the flywheel needs to be resurfaced with a new clutch? I thought it was important to do that so it doesn't ruin the new clutch!

  • @TutorialTipCom nah only if you feel a shuddering when you engaging the clutch. but he also forgot to point out to remove the wires goign to the VSS, the reverse light switch, the shift cables/linkage, the ground wire, and just drop the transmission down, its not heavy 80 lbs and being completly out of the way makes it a lot easier to install the clutch, and torque the bolts correctly on the pressure plate.

  • You are making a greasy grimy job look easy.

You are a liability to newbies, not an asset. Wow...just, wow.

  • @bullshinski You are a dyed in the wool cynic

  • I have a 04 Mustang. how much would it be to replace the clutch at the shop? I already bought the new clutch.

  • @Phloxx1 most mechanics won't use parts bought by customers. So call in your area to see if anyone will. Prices vary widely, so call.

  • Scotty you're a beast, I wish I was as confident as you replacing a clutch

  • that is the quick way to do the clutch no doubt, but if i'm pullin the tranny, i always replace the rear main, and more than 90% of the time the flywheel needs turning. most customers don't have a problem with that, there are some that wanna pinch every where they can, and i understand that, but it's still the better way to do it, in my opinion

  • Looking to change the entire clutch assembly on my 92 dodge stealth R/T turbo...looking at a lot of money thanks for this video! :)

  • great vid Scotty! Easy to follow and fun to watch! Regards to you from Sweden!

  • how much is a clutch for a 94 accord roughly? and how much in labour is it usually? thanks

  • @Ty616AT prices vary widely, the whole job goes from 400 to 800 bucks depending who's doing it.

  • Great video but that guy seems genuinely insane.

  • @robtubedude1 You sure have a weird idea of what "insane" is. Either that or you are genuinely Boring.

  • @scottykilmer i'm having a problem with my corsa, i heard a pop and the clutch pedal went down but the cable is fine, although even when pulled diectly from the release arm it wont come out of gear, any ideas?

  • @joet0124 either that cable broke on one end, OR the clutch inside the transmission has broken and you'll have to pull the tranny off to fix it.

  • do you know how much for the automatic transmission clutch of '02 accord lx?? tyy

  • @ZXiPoZ A TON for auto tranny work on an accord, think 2500 bucks upwards to rebuild one correctly.

  • @scottykilmer one more question that, the simplest way to realize the broken transmission clutch as you do that the vehicle doesnt run well at high rpm??

  • @scottykilmer Mine is auto transmission 4cyl

  • Love your videos! Especially helpful if you recently broke your transmission link, and burn the shit out of the clutch as you travel 60 mph in 3rd gear for awhile...

  • @scottykilmer I love your videos man, but i feel you should have made mention of the parts. For example, you pry the pressure plate not the clutch plate. And that the to seat the fork onto the throwout bearing properly or risk smashing those cheap bearing they pack in nowadays (beware the plastic ones). I also say that was a kit from autozone, most are Luk clutches but some come with plastic bearings (Nissan off the top of my head). Other tan that, sound advice.

  • Hey Scotty does the driveshaft needs to be align when you put them back in? and also the throw out bearing dont you align them in the spline? Just wondering coz i might gonna do it myself come this spring...thanks!

  • @kinakusgansacebu na, unless you bend em taking em out with superman strength

  • Why you reuse trans fluid? gross...

  • @markkjay when people say imports toyotas and hondas come too mind, american made is fords, chevy, dodge. its alot harder to work on a 6.0l ford then it is a honda.

  • that was the fastest clutch change ive ever seen

  • @scottykilmer no need to get upset grandpa just stateing a fact

  • @hanratty450 he is just stating the fact, people buy lots of Toyota and Honda NOT American cars. please don't get upset with the fact that American car makers are already bankrupt.

  • @hanratty450 wanna buy American? BUY TOYOTA, it is the most American car. Dont buy GM and ford cuz they are now made in China. lol

  • anyways working on imports. work on american made

  • @hanratty450 i WORK on what people buy, and they buy a lot of toyotas and honda.

  • @hanratty450 Sorry, buddy. Majority of imports, particularly Asian cars, ARE and HAVE BEEN, for a few years now, manufactured IN America, BY Americans. Your ignorance is outdated.

  • As I shift into second gear It feels like there is a dramatic drop off in torque shortly after releasing the clutch. It's for a very narrow band of RPM, maybe 1800-2100 RPM. Is this a clutch problem or a driver problem?

  • @naimah92 if it slips with the tach going up but the speedo not following, time for a new clutch. If not, could be tons of things, including fuel injetion lag problems.

  • I thought a clutch has to be torqued correctly

  • @EXP0SEtheFRAUDS just make em tight so they don't loosen up when driving. I've never used one in my life on a clutch. No working room there for one anywa.

  • Shouldn't you use a torque wrench for the right tention on the bolts?

  • Ive said this before in other videos. You dont need to remove the driveshaft on the opposite side of the car. Sure it makes installation easier but its not necessary.

  • @Lillie1986 You're nuts, on many cars it's impossible to remove the transmission to get to the clutch without taking the opposite side drive shaft off. I've been working on em for 44 years, and most need it taken off.

  • @Lillie1986 I 100% agree with on that. Just look at the davesfarm 2003 kia rio clutch replacement he did it that way.

  • fuck that looked like a shit load of work. how long did this job really take you?

  • @inktoxicated 3 and a half hours.

  • how do you know if its the clutch or pressure plate?

  • @crammage you replace the clutch set, the entire set of clutch disc, pressure plate, throw out bearing, and pilot bearing, they come in a kit./

  • @scottykilmer ok but what i mean is how do you know if the problem is the pressure plate , clutch or throw out berring , like my car has some play to the clutch so i have to let the clutch out slower so it doesnt engauge to quickly in my dads car is doesnt have as much slack

  • Hi there Scott, I got two questions. My VW Vento will throw out my 5th gear and switch to neutral when driving, what could be wrong? Also is it ok to apply the industrial grease (for bolts and screws) to cleaned engine parts before assembling a bike engine?

  • @Louloudito No, I wouldn't grease bike bolts. Your transmission 5th gear is just wearing out, stop using it, or fix it. It will fall off and wreck everything if you keep using it, but many guys leave it alone and they can go years as long as you stay in 4th

  • @scottykilmer hey scotty you are my go to guy now cus you know everything. im trying to buy a 99 mistubishi eclipse but it doesnt start the starter and battery are good to my knowledge and the owner seems to think it is a headgasket leak that is causing the problem i dont think so but it did turn on for about 2 seconds and then dies the car has power though

  • @jessetorres16 do a compression test of it, and if it runs long enough, do my "how to find out if your head gasket is blown" test to find out.

  • those jack stands look safe as hell lol

  • hey scotty, ive got a 1988 honda civic. just wanna make sure that i need a new clutch. it started off slipping every once and a while, then when the pedals disengaged sounds like the bearings shot. it grinds if i put it into reverse, and now and if i get off the highway, or even sometimes driving around, theres a wall in front of most of the gears haha. could that be the slave cylinder leaking like the comment above or is it just time for a new clutch. thanks

  • @elementality2431 yea, time for a new clutch assembly, change all the parts inside the tranny when you pull it

  • You make it look so easy, I wish I were you!

  • Could u put a video on how to drive stick shift a good tutorial braking, downshifting, reverse, takeoff

  • On my mums renault clio 1.2 the clutch doesn't feel like its slipping, but the pedal itself doesn't seem to feel very strong when i press it in it doesn't feel like its doing anything, which is making it hard to change gear.

  • @peugeotCitroen2CV check the clutch slave and master cylinder for leakage, and replace any that leak at the seals.

  • You make it look so easy lol

I work in a garage that handles only Nissan and Renault and replacing the clutch takes atleast 2-3 hours to get it done

and they charge the poor guy for 2,000$!

  • hey scotty. i love watching your vids they are so helpful and i really learned alot from you. i'm 17 and i have a 96 dodge ram 1500 5.2. i had to change the trans and now it won't start. tips?

    thanks

  • @crashbrandon10 lots of wires and sensors could have been disturbed, espeically the crank sensor, check that first.

  • @scottykilmer will do. thanks scotty! oh and next time i have a question should i comment on here or send you a message on your site?

  • Hi scotty! :) I have a year 2000 hyundai accent 1.3i combi coupè. While im driving the rev goes up but the car is not accelerating so much.. its almost like holding the clutch half way in.... is my clutch worn out?

  • @mittlykkepass yet, time for a new clutch set.

  • also, compared to how the truck drove about a year ago(only 5k miles), it seems to take more acceleration to get it moving from a stop. before, the truck would take off holding it at ~ 1300,(and I didn't have to ride the clutch to do it at that rpm either). now it seems I have to maintain 16-1800 rpm until I am able to depress the pedal w/o jerking the car or stalling.

  • Hey scotty, my truck revs a little high, but doesn't move very fast, but it only does it for 1st and 2nd gear. once I'm in 3rd, it takes off pretty good. does this mean my clutch is bad or just on its way out?

  • @Vacmasterthegreat Probably starting to wear out. that's how they start to go, in lower gears first.

  • You look like a child molester.. Yet you have some good stuff

  • @Likemycomment100 what a strange comment. I find children to be rather annoying, I certainly am not attracted to them. women, now that's another story.

  • hey scotty can you plz do a video of replasing a clutch in a rear wheel drive car

  • @jjbourne144 I make em as I fix customer's cars, and most have front wheel drive. but i'll make one if I do one in the future.

  • @scottykilmer alright thanks man!

  • @jjbourne144 There's no diffrent. Just uninstall few diffrent parts like driveshaft.

  • hey scotty, my friend has a 2001 chevy silverado, and it has starting problems. like it wont hold the charge, alternator is good, i checked the wires and they dont seem damaged. what do you think could be causing the problem? thanks

  • @003Mexicano tons of things can do that, have the battery checked first, and if that's OK, do my video "fixing battery drain on your car" and do that next. scotty

  • Hey Scottie I have just got my new clutch installed by a mate in a Nissan pulsar sr20de with an exceedy and now it's jerking when I accelerate to 2000 revs. now he's saying it must be my fuel pump. It wasn't doing that on the old clutch I had. Any suggestions.

  • @bboiflex1982 I would assume he messed up the job, either installing the clutch incorrectly or damaging wires or sensors when removing the transmission.

  • 3:36 Thats whats she said

  • @walmartgretr hahahahah )))))

  • 3:38 Thats what she said.

  • good vid. good bit of tinkering to get the tranmission out of them hondas. the toyotas can be a bitch aswell.

  • something you forgot thats imporant, to disconect the battery first. love your vids!
