Running lots of tires is actually a huge advantage under certain circumstances. In some vehicles, if you keep the weight down.. the buoyancy from the tires can actually keep a vehicle above mud or even water.

The trick, however, is managing how the vehicle steers and maneuvers across the terrain.

The Russians and Czech engineers figured all this out long ago.

Have a look at the Tratra and Kamatz trucks for your answer to what situations make tires better then tracks.

Good idea as long as the terrain is not very unlevel (Looks like @ 1:41 is close to its limit & if it had been a crooked hill like that it would not have made it.) but in a natural rough terrain, not so much. - If it does what you wanted then OK but if not, "back to the drawing board".

This thing gets a fail I'm afraid. No articulation to the chassis.. probably the reason you don't see it traverse any inclines, and only the front axle is set for steering.. so it has to haul the second axle across what ever it is clinging to. Check out some of the 8x8 Tatras to see how a suspension set up should be done.

I'm a process engineer. I design for large scale manufacturing.

I design this stuff in my sleep.

My comment was wholly valid. One look tells you that it's frame won't handle the stress, your frying your tires without need and wasting 2/3's of your power.

I have great respect for him actually building it..it's just a shame he didn't think the steering through.

If he had, he would loose the 3rd axle and set the front 2 up for steering.Same performance with more power to use.

This thing really isn't that great. First, the steering sucks horribly. Second, it seems underpowered. Third, the articulation isn't that great. Fourth, it's so long it's ridiculous. I'd rather go for the traditional 4x4 that does not have the turning radius of the titanic than to worry about the reliability and power loss through all of these extra moving parts.

its a nice rig, but probably too spendy for the general public. not sure what kind of person the company would target for this to be used in they're business other then the government. but they have already enough off road capable machines that this is nothing special. but for another idea for development. 4 wheel or 8wheel turning. instead of just the front.. because what if your on an incline and you need to turn and those front two come off the ground?

For the money he spent could have achieved much better results, with a better performing vehicle. You could do with longer travling suspension. You pivot on 4 wheels with 4 off the ground at one point. In my off roading experience you need as much power down as possible. Extended shocks are a must.

Pretty cool! It does seem to be a little stiff in the center though. What if there were some sort of joint system in the center of the chassis so it could bend with the contour of the terrain like a centipede? That way you could keep all 8 wheels on the ground. Are you running lockers? Anyway, that's some really nice engineering you've done there. good luck with it.
