In fact, until around 1992, the European teams had most of their best players at the Olympics and the North-Americans were stuck with leftovers cus they couldn't send their NHLers. I will admit the US isn't the 2nd best hockey country in the world, it is likely Russia or possibly the Czech Republic, but doesn't change the fact that in best on best tournaments between 91-02, the final was Canada-US every year but 98.

The Americans have not produced elite level talent since the Roenick, Modano, Leach generation. Miller is questionable in goal and you have to admit that the strong US team was anchored by its goaltender, Mike Richter.

I think the Russians have a couple elite level players but seriously lack depth. Perhaps more importanty, they seem devoid of the will to fight through adversity when playing against Canadian competition. They seem to wilt during these confrontations.

Well, the Russians showed me something at this years WC final. They were skilled and determined. We might be seeing the re-awakening of a proud bear.

Richter's play clearly leveled off during the post 97 period. A part of that may have come from the back injuries he had to endure but that's just life. Brodeaur, Hasek and Roy all had injuries and found ways to dominate again. Richter was never able to push his performance to that elite level that he exprienced from 94 to 96.

Canada smoked the Americans 4-1 in that game but Richter made the score respectable. However, if that had been the 94-96 version of Richter the Americans may have been considerably more dangerous. Still, Richter had a special career and the Yanks had better hope that Ryan Miller finds his game again.
