@77Metallica What has he done to impress? Played a big role in Uruguay's Copa America win. Won young player of the tournament, which included young players like Neymar etc.
Ofcourse he isn't a world class defender YET. Name any 20 year old center back who is world class?
Is Phil Jones (who cost a lot more) world class yet? NO.
@77Metallica Why is he far better? because he's been given a chance? Coates hasn't played because we havn't had too may injuries at the back. 1 year means nothing.
I'm not saying he isn't better than Coates but how will anyone know untill he gets a run of games?
@77Metallica I don't know where to start. "Coates is more like Jenkinson" How? Coates is very good technically Jenkinson is not plus one is a CB the other a FB."He is 19 and is that many times better than Coates" How can you say that when you have hardly seen Coates play? Coates got player of the tournament at the Copa America that's like Jones getting player of the tournament at the Euro's which isn't realistic.Phil Jones cost more than 8 million do your research.
"Phil Jones cost about 8 million more for a far better prospect"
8 million more, not 8 million!
But I forgive you, probably an honest mistake.
I meant more like Jenkinson in the way he will probably DEVELOP into a decent player. Unlike Jones who has been performing to a decent standard already.
@77Metallica LOL yeah my bad.Have you ever seen Coates play? .I don't think he will develop anything like Jenkinson, the guy is far superior technically has already got lots more experience than Jenkinson. This guy is getting in the Uruguay team at a young age with already good defenders there like Godin,Lugano and Caceres.Smalling for example wasn't even getting starts often for Fulham when Man Utd bought him but now he's pretty much a regular.
How was Alberto Aquelani a flop? for coming to liverpool injured for 6 months , played well from january til the end of the season and linked up well with gerrard in the middle .. then at the end of season Benitez the manager who bought him got sacked and hodgson ahd to loan him out due to his wage bill with hicks and gillete . he never really got the chance to really prove himself.
some small minded people on these comments, just because his dad is english does not mean his surname is pronounced 'coats'. surnames can go back generations
@JonnyJackass493 funnily his dad is english isnt that weird!!!!!, an englishman moves to uruguay and suddenly his name is pronounced Ku-wat-tez. there are some idiots youtube ...sheesh.
incase you cant surf to that address here a little excerpt.
The name Coates is of ancient origin and was written in the earliest records as De Cote, a Norman name; the letter "a" occurs in the spelling as early as 1331, when in the fourth year of Edward III, William De Coates was Lord of Coles DeVille in Leicestershire, England, and in 1347 John De Coates, with an "a" held lands here of Bishop of Lincoln, although the name was generally written Cotes until the seventeenth century.
Sami Hyypiä, Daniel Agger, Martin Škrtel, and Sebastián Coates = Goes to show Liverpool know very well, how to negotiate :) the cost of these four players, cost less than what Man City payed for Joleon Lescott. Less than what Man Utd payed for Rio Ferdinand!!!! Bottom line is - LIVERPOOL KNOW THEIR PLAYERS!!!
that is because it is short for transfer window, I.E. "Transfer Window watch". when you look at it that way it does make sense, but i do get what you mean.
These guys dont now anything about football in uraguay this was seen as historic because of the £7 million price tag hes the most expensive player ever brought strait from there national league!
@endswherebegins Well, it maybe an English name but he's Uruguayan and that's how its pronounced. Its like David Villa who's Spanish. The David is pronounced 'Dahveed' not 'Dayvid' or Thierry Henry where Henry is pronounced 'Hanri' not 'Henri' like the English would call. So his is pronounced Kwatez not Kohtz like the English would normally say.
Just to let you guys know this "peñarol has more fans" thing (read below, tinchitoman's comment) is just bullshit.
Actually, that club as a whole is full of shit. To the point that they call themselves "manyas", after the italian expression "mangia merda" ("shit eaters").
But please, don't believe me... ask THEM!" they are SO proud of who they are! LOL!
He´s tall, but despite his height he´s good with the ball. I think this is a very good deal for Liverpool, cause Coates is only 20 years old, and already played a lot of important games (in Copa Libertadores.. our Champions League, and in Copa America) and he has done it with great level. I think with a little time he´ll settle down and be an important player to the team.
As a Peñarol fan (for those who don´t know that team, it`s one of the biggest in South America, and the team with more fans in Uruguay, also Nacional´s rival) I have to say that Coates is a very good player.
All spanish speakers would follow that logic, many anglo names have been "hispanized" like that. Originally Sebastian ancestors came to South America from Britain. Coates is a scottish surname, more precisely a sept from Farquharson clan, you can check this in the clan's web. ...and seems to be a relative of mine too!!
Just pronounce it as it reads. It's NOT a south american surname, it's a scottish one. In Uruguay nobody says his name as it sounds originally because they read "oa" different than english speakers and don´t silence letter "e" before "s".
Just pronounce it as it reads. It's NOT a south american surname, it's a scottish one. In Uruguay nobody says his name correctly as they read "oa" different than english speakers and don´t silence letter "e" before "s".
