Thanks...good info...I had2 avet raptor reels given to me through"rods for soldiers" ..cant wait to use them in March..I plan on practicing on a lake before hitting the ocean..I was blessed with 2 custom rods with over40 hours each put into them...I am not worthy..but so thankful...everyone drools when they see my red white and blue rods with sweet avet reels.
@danngree Im in the US at the moment, From the UK originally and you just done these reels at home. Picking two of the up this week, They are indeed a thing of beauty! Great review, This helped to make my mind up. Thanks!
all the people i know that have gotten reels from charkbait have found something wrong with the reel wether it's the drag being super loud or a cosmetic problem
I just got a Teramar and i have to clamp my sxmc on it, how do i know how far to clamp it on? Could you show me man, maybe make another instructional video. This video enticed me to purchasing a avet sx mc 5.3
@danngree hi danny, just bought avet MXl for my off shore fishing this october 2011.. after watching your videos, feel its really worth it to buy.. many thanks for the info :)
I see that you said that the sx hiolds 600 yards of 20lb braid. I have 300yard spool of power pro spectra. Will this be enough to spool on without any backing or should I put backing on the reel to fill the spool a bit more? Should I use mono for the backing or just put another 300 yards of power pro? Thanks
Helo im a fisherman from mass, i fish for cod, haddock, stripper and flounder i was wondering if you would recomend this reel? and if so wich modle? the mxl double speed or the sx double speed?
@27bravo19 If you have the money for it, i would go for a MXL 2 speed, but if oyur looking to save some cash im sure you could more than get by with the two speed SX.
@MrDanthefisherman1 it depends on the rod im using, if im using a surf rod ill put a shock mono ldeader on it, but if its on a trolling rod or anything under 7 foot ill just go strait braid.
Serious question....how can avet make an awesome reel all anodized and van staal is 3 times the price. Ive had 3 van staal over the years which i bought cause i thought they looked cool but now ill try an anodized avet.
serious answer... its all about the name and marketing. if Van Stall slapped their name on the exact same avet reel they could sell if for 5 times the price that avet dose, but because avet dosent have as much creditability yet they have to keep their prices lower. also, avet prides them selves on producing a high quality affordable reel.
Thx for the SX and MXL reviews. I couldnt decide on which one to get and decided on the smaller SX after seeing the two side by each. Are the two you have left handed models? It sure looks it from the video.
Good choice on the SX i tend to use it much more than my MXL. To answer your question, neither of them are left handed reels, i recorded these videos on my macbook pro and for some reason in inverted the videos.
nice review and nice reel avet is a great reel company they make reels for fishermen like this one magnets in reels has been around for a while here on the texas coast we put the magnets in our reels our self by using expoxy to glue metal washers in then putting rare earth magnets on them. usally on the left sideplate. oh and here at bob haul i see avets reels all the time
Dan that would be great. I am a New Englander. Its like learning all over again. The fish and their surroundings are a lot different. But, please that would be great. Take Care Johnny
@MrJohnnyrace I have a couple of rods I can review now if youd like to see it. and I've been talking to a local tackle shop about letting me review some of their reels. Id also like to do a couple of videos on rigging and what tackle to use where.
@MrJohnnyrace thank you very much, the positive feed back means allot. where is that dealer in Florida if you dont mind me asking? I just recently moved to St. Augustine Fl, and ive been looking for a really nice tackle shop.
Actually I accidently gave you the wrong info. It is the Avet Raptor SX Sorry. Later on I will buy the T REX 30 I rated your video 5 stars. Sorry for my sanility. Take Care Johnny St. Augistine?? Im here in central Fla. You should check Eddy at Cabbage Key Rod And Reel. Hes online too. Hes in Largo. But he ships, also he is knowledgible. His Number is toll free it is 1-877-257-3985
@MrJohnnyrace The T REX is a beast of a reel, i got a chance to play with one that a guy had at the dock a couple of weeks back and it was just unreal. when you get that video up id love to see it and learn some more about it.
@nellsonisrad for a bridge an a pier, id actually buy a surf rod, thats what ive been using lately and its worked great. you can get out past everybody else, and you have more room to work the fish with a longer rod. as for shark fishing, i have an avet MXL on a Shimano Travili jigging rod for sharks and it works great. its got enough flex so you can cast it pretty well, and with the contour on the rods grip you can get a great grip on it.
these reels are amazing nothing can compare to them we use the bigger versions like the t-rx versions for canyon runs and they always hold up great and also have the yet smaller ones for our fluke and wreck fishing trips also have ones we use for live lining bunker for stripers and other various species these reels work great and have blown all my expectations.
I got the LX version yesterday, i need more line capacity because i do alot of beach fishing for tarpon from land..the LX has good line capacity for its size, i got about 100 yards 50 lb mono backing, &450 yards of 80 lb power pro..still getting used to nonlevelwinds but this reel handled AMAZINGLY when i hooked into a 100 lb jewfish i was able to pull him out of the rocks..i am gonna practice casting it tonight, didn't get to really throw it on the boat, but i was just lobbing it getting 70 ft
first, cool review! i have the same reel and also liked it, only issue i had was that i also have non-mc avets, and when grabbing say, my mxj and casting i forgot there was no mc and birdnest.. my other comment is about the knob on the gear side of the reel, this is a drag preset knob (should only be adjusted while reel is in "free" or you can misalign some things) maxing out this knob should give you 9lbs drag at strike, loose give you less etc. so carefull if u get bit with no drag pressure!
I have found that i can cast further with mono on this reel, I currently have it on a 12ft surf rod, and the extra stretch from the mono when I'm casting seems to give me a little more range.
It depends, where do you plan on fishing? Off the shore, a pier, of a boat? Where you are fishing from is like 90% of your determining factor for choosing a rod.
I would take a look at the Lamiglas tropic pro jigging rods, I've seen and heard good things about them. If you have a good local tackle shop id go up there and go feel some rods. Its very difficult to order a rod off the internet.
I have it attached directly to the spool, I do a uni knot and then put a drop of super glue on it to secure it. I spooled this reel with 300 yards of 20lb spectra power pro line, which ran me about $40. Most everybody up here still tends to use mono, so the braid prices are outragious.
Is that just straight braid on the reel or did you use backing because I own almost all the Avet reels except the T-RX. I mean I use 230 yards mono for backing and 300 yards of 70 lb on my Avet Pro EX 30. I don't know if you use backing or if you just spool the braid straight to the spool and if you do spool it straight to the spool how do you not get line spin because the barrel of the spool is extremely smooth. Plus how much does power pro cost in Texas 50 bucks a spool Holy Shit for what test
