For Left for dead, you'll want dual core 2.4GHz cpu at least, 2gigs ddr3-1333 at least, and a Radeon HD 5560/5570 would suffice. If you want to game, I recommend NVidia GTX 460 (great performance for a banging price).

Thanks god I switched from single-core to dual-core. My previous Celeron D 356 CPU 3.33GHz just couldn't keep up with modern games and applications, so I got tired of the lag and switched over to a Pentium E5200 dual-core CPU 2.50GHz. Overclocked the living hell out of it to 3.95GHz and my games and applications can fly now.

It appears to have the same graphics, it's just the frame rate that's different. I'm going for the dual-core, only because the dual-core has come a long way since the Pentium 4. Even high processing power cannot match the effects of well designed processors. I wouldn't know that for a fact though.

Core 2 Duo is definitly faster, but by such a small amount, L4D is a CPU intensive game, these systems are being bottlenecked by a crappy video card..

because i run a Pentium D @ 3.2GHz (which is a much worse CPU than these two)

paired with a HD 4850... and i'm running at 60fps+ in all situations

these CPU's are almost identical, C2D is better optimized for games this generation
