When was this special? Because if Karen was still alive, he probably would have had her. Maybe Karen was too busy. Babs still sings it beautifully in her own Barbra way, the way only she can. From the way Barbra looks, it looks like this was filmed sometime between 1970 and 1972.

this show was recorded in 1971. karen was still alive back then. the carpenters didn't like the song so they wanted to change the it. and so they did change the arrangement. so i think burt bacharach wouldn't like to play his song the way they changed it. and by the way would you rather have karen carpenter in your show or barbra streisand?? :)

No, I don't think it was anything like that. Search YouTube for Great Performances Burt Bacharach Part 6. Herb Alpert and Richard Carpenter talk about the song, and how it was changed at the behest of Alpert, and wasn't anything malicious, or other than that, just thought it could use a different arrangement.

Side note, I knew of the Carpenter's version first, and came across this version by accident. I have to say you can definitely feel Bacharach more in this version than the other!
