We have a couple of holes drilled in the side of the feeder so the lid stays open when a pin is pushed into the top hole. That way the chickens get used to feeding from the box. After a short time the pin is lower to the second hole lowering the lid to half way, they see the food and get used to the lid poping up when they step on the pedal. Once they get the hang of that the pin is removed and the'll help themselves, as you can see.
