  • what amp u using ?

  • @UKToneKing In this video Im using a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe special edition brown tolex with a jensen speaker. In my last couple videos Ive been using my Two-Rock John Mayer signature.

  • So, I should have listened to your advice, but hey thats half the fun is experimenting, right? Maybe keep the TS bridge and use the clones for middle and neck? hmmmm??

  • @p1ayn If youre looking for a fat bridge pickup I would go for the duncan SSL5 or raising the bridge pickup height. Keep me updated!

  • Ok John, bought the TS and had them installed on my Blk1. After a gig out i came to my conclusion that I am reinstalling the Blk1 Clones. The TS are great PuPs, are much hotter however, I found I get a nicer tone and variety with the Clones. The TS were much brighter and a bit too midrangy for me. Also, the clones provided a warmer bluesy tone, and for cleans, I could not get the TS to get me a true clean sound without manipulation of my settings.

  • does anybody know if the Texas Specials are quit(ish) or does it have that normal single coil hum?

  • @Stratmater All single coils hum. Texas specials arent too bad. As long as you shield the inside of the body cavity with shielding paint and shield the underside of the pickguard you shouldnt have any problems.

  • @libertyfalls thanks for the tip. so i paint the inside of the body, and paint the back of the pickguard to?

  • @Stratmater I would paint the inside of the body and get a pickguard aluminum shield. It looks just like a pickguard but its slightly smaller and fits the back of it perfectly.

  • Do you mind doing a side by side comparison between your black1 clone pickups and big dipper pickups? I am trying to decide which one to put into my custom Warmoth guitar. I am really into John Mayer and his sound.

  • @bball33g We can do that when we get some more big dippers come through. If you want mayer tone the clone pickups capture it perfectly. Mayer used the black1 to record almost everything on continuum. HIs electric guitar tones before continuum were ok but didnt get amazing til the black1. These pickups are magic! Check out our black1 clone demo and listen for yourself.

  • hi-can you tell me the difference between ordinary texas specilas and custom shop ones-thanks sean

  • @1273seant THey are the same thing. Texas specials and custom shop texas specials are the same.

  • Yeah, I'd say they're almost identical sounding, bigger dippers are just ever so slightly brighter. Hope I'm not restating the obvious, haha! Great video btw, very helpful! Thanks, man!

  • Blang blang,delicious...

  • @liberyfalls Ok so you're john?:)

  • @moneyfornothing13 Yep, thats me.

  • Is the black one strat in the demo from custom relics

  • @moneyfornothing13 Kind of... Lol. Im owner operator of custom-relics and this was my first attempt at one on my personal guitar. They are much better than this one now! check out the site for pictures!

  • Can't hear a damn difference! Am I tonedeaf??

  • @zimonslot THey are very similar. Big dippers were based on texas specials. THe texas specials are a little thicker and full sounding.

  • What you amp settings? great tone

  • which gauge stringing used?

  • @ssj1971 11's on the texas specials and 9's on the big dippers.

  • @libertyfalls heaviness on strings really do make a difference, so this is actually not a real legit comparison.. still love it tho! love but tones, but in my opinion the big dippers are more spanking and i love that, and i believe that if you roll off the mids on ur amp, the big dippersll sound exactly like texas specials..

  • What pickups does John use on his Monterey?

  • @gaiolinn Custom wound fender pickups. The monterey was a 64 strat and the pickups were made to reflect that year. the klein '65 pickups really nail it. THey sound like CS69's only with more body and character. I use them in my monterey pop demo on my channel.

  • What amp are you playing through?

  • @petehsuk Fender hot rod deluxe brown tolex with jensen speaker.

  • Hello Sir!! I have a question?! Would you be able to make a White1 for me? Just the same as the Black1 but than in white? That would be great and unique?!

    Greetings from the Netherlands

  • @FreaquedeMusique We can do that no problem. THe olympic white looks simply beautiful against the brown wood and gold hardware. It wont be any extra either. COntact me at toomanypedals@Hotmail.com

  • @libertyfalls Have you already made one once? I would love to see that, so I can make my final decision.

Well I still have to save, but in my mind it looks great!

  • @FreaquedeMusique We didnt take a picture unfortunately... I can link you to a similar look if you message me your email address.

  • Oh and those texas specials are perfect in my opinion great job mate

  • What song were you playing at 4:51 it was awesome

  • @gibsonguy416 Slow Dancing in a burning room.

  • love the half made black one in the back ground! btw

  • amazing thanks for the comparison... Guess I like the Big Dippers more cuz they got more of that fender twang/quack!

  • IMHO....The texas specials have a fuller sound and sound more bluesy than the big dippers! Btw, I just ordered my Mayer strat which should be here next wednesday!! I love the neck on it! (Tested it at GC)

  • does anyone recommend installing texas specials in a Squier ?

  • Hi! nice sound and nice playing too! I'm trying to get the same sound as john mayer and i wondering which pickups to buy, i listen to CS 69, CS 54, but i think there is no doubt these "texas special" are the one for what i want! I really thank you for the perfect review for many people that want the same sound! one more thing, can you tell me if the john mayer's strat has the tremolo blocked?

  • @Samprayer2 He doesnt block the tremolo but he does use 5 springs in the rear tremolo. THat acts in much the same way that blocking does. It plays like a hard tail either way. Texas specials are the way to go. If you want to spend the extra cash I would suggest getting some black1 clone pickups from custom-relics.

  • @libertyfalls thank you, I allready ordered the texas special pickups, i dont have enought money for the big dippers clone but I saw the project that you did in the other video and they are really good actually I hope one day I get one of yours black one, they are perfect. thanks for the sympathy

  • @libertyfalls do you have any exp. with the "black1 clone pickups"? are they texas spec. copys or B.D. copys?

  • @MrMutron I have a youtube demo of the black1 clones. THey arent big dippers or texas specials or anything close. THey are single coils but that is where the similarities stop. They are wound with a different kind of wire, use different magnets and have different outputs.

  • big big big big HANDS!!!

  • can#t hear any difference

  • I've seen all 4 and it gets down to which sound do you want, both are good. If you want that knopler type strat sound I can tell you playing telegraph rd. with texas spec. sounds as if you were listening to the track itself.

  • Nice chops! What rig are you playing thru? I am not as articulate since the stroke

  • @rfrakes331k Hot rod deluxe>bb-1>fulldrive2>ts10>zendrive>cornish P-2>boss eq>entire line of tech 21 character series pedals>rt-20>demeter compulator>aqua puss>nova delay

  • Nice chops! What rig are you playing thru?

  • oh dude that 4th position with the big dippers is heaven to my ears. thats the position mayer uses on his black1 when playing gravity as well. that is why i really want big dippers to put in my partsocaster but i may have to settle for the S-5's as im running short on cash and the Big Dippers as almost impossible to find in Australia. Do you rate the S-5's well in comparison to the Big Dippers?

  • @kottaaz The S-5 pickups are the same pickups as the Big Dippers. Just made by a different company. THey are wound exactly the same with the same magnets and wire. Get them side by side and you cant tell the difference.

  • The Klein pickups are not ripoffs. I wish you wouldn't say stuff like that. They are really great sounding and don't happen to cost 400 bucks or more....used.

  • @theshyguitarist I meant copy, not ripoff. Ripoff does have a negative connotation. Ive worked with Klein for a long time and his pickups are awesome. I was just trying to say that they were the real Fender Big Dippers. and not a copy. The $400 was talking about the big dippers not the S-5's.

  • I think the Texas Specials are better.

  • I really want some big dippers and Killians..lol

  • so what exactly do you do?

  • @BrittonDeJong As far as the website goes? go to custom-relics. com and look at what we offer. We can do pretty much anything.

  • the john mayer strat...is that the $1500 version or the more expensive? and do you know if the cheaper version comes with the big dippers? Thanks

  • @JhonnyTrigg The sunburst is the Fender Mayer Signature strat. All Mayer signature strats come with big dippers. The custom-relics guitars come with whatever pickups you want.

  • hey man... question. Which pickups are in which guitar? the first one you demo-ed... were those big dippers or texas specials?

    appreciate the reply :)

  • @KiwiBwoi The texas specials are in the black guitar. Big dippers are in the sunburst. Listen from 0:04-0:25. :-) Its all good!

  • @libertyfalls LOL sorry that was dumb of me >.<'' thanks for the reply man. Which pickups do you prefer??

  • @KiwiBwoi I like fender custom 60's pickups over any of these but they are very elusive creatures... Between the two on my setup I like the texas specials. A simple eq tweak can make these pickups sound like big dippers quite easily. THey are very similar.

  • @KiwiBwoi The Big Dippers are in the Sunburst strat, the Texas Specials are in the first demonstrated guitar.

  • I have to decide between this guitar that you made and a SRV series what do you think?

  • @WaltonWembleyMusic Depends what you like. I could make your mayer relic in sunburst with a black pickguard or I could make you a SRV relic. I could put whatever pickups you want in it. Or we could come up with a unique relic pattern customized for you in any color. Personally Im not a big fan of the SRV strats, srv used a 7.25 radius, they use a 12, he used a rosewood board, they use pao farro, he used chrome hardware for 99% of his career they used gold. Not a good reproduction imo.

  • That sounds awesome. Why are you comparing Texas Specials vs. Big Dippers? Do they have a reputation of sounding similar? Because they do. I've considered trying my luck on eBay for a set of Big Dippers but if Texas Specials sound similar maybe I should get those?

  • @mynameisjacob Big dippers are based off of the texas specials.

  • Dude I used to live in Pekin, IL

  • @ggroene Whoa, weird. How old are you?

  • Nice demo, by the way I was wondering what strap locks do you have on the black one replica? thanks!

  • @darkaug2 They are just 35 cent rubber washers from my local hardware store. I bought a bunch of different sizes so I could find ones that fit ok. Now I use schaller strap-lcoks like mayer uses now.

  • custom-relics. they wont let anyone post a web address so put the dub dub dub before it and the dawt com after it.

  • Comment removed

  • hi, u made the black one u holding in the video? do u have a website?

  • @yihwei90 Yes, I do.... go to custom-relics. You know what to put before and after it... youtube doesnt allow website links so but the dot com after it.

  • @libertyfalls i think they allow them in the description. i saw it on a video on your profile page. maybe you should stick it in the description on this one especially since that guitar is like on the thumbnail.

nice demo by the way. honestly, you sold me on the texas specials. the big dippers sound great though. especially on gravity. the kicker for me was how good the texas specials also sound on Gravity. love that meaty sound.

  • @jonnybradley12 Hot Rod Deluxe. Overdrives were marshall bluesbreaker and fulldrive2 mostly.

  • Even better, save the $350 and lower the Texas specials until you hit that sweet spot where they give you that Vintage tone while still giving higher output. I sank my Texas specials closer to the pickgaurd on a PRS SE EG strat and they sound simply Brilliant!

  • so after spending so much time with both guitars whats your opinion on the pickups? i think they sound pretty freaking close

  • @caspersvapors Here is my conclusion... Texas specials sound and play like overwound pickups. No surprise. The big dippers sound like vintage lower output pickups only they have the output of overwound pickups. The big dippers sound a little thin compared to the texas specials but that is because they sound very vintage. Having the sound of vintage pickups but the output of overwound pickups is really awesome. I would save $350 and go with the texas specials. Theyre very close. .

  • @libertyfalls do the kleins have that same quality of being higher output pickups with a lower output, vintage sound?

  • @caspersvapors They are very similar. If you didnt have them next to each other to do a side by side comparison you couldnt tell them apart.

  • @libertyfalls Klein also has s-1 high output that give you a a warm vintage tone but with more output. The're supposed to be similar to SRV's pickups in #1

the outputs are 6.9(neck) 6.9(middle) and 7.3 in the bridge

  • @libertyfalls Did you help Klein build those Jazzy Cats? Are the S-5 pickups any good?

  • @NOLA2828 Technically yes, I did buit they didnt come out as I had hoped. The S-5 pickups are good. Sound just like big dippers. My website offers black one clone pickups. THey are a combo of the S-5 and the jazzy cats. Made by klein....

  • @libertyfalls What are the best Klein Pickups in your opinion? I just found a mint 57 reissue japan strat from like "94" I believe . I also ordered a warmoth neck to replace the maple neck on the guitar. Im just trying to get some pointers. Im looking for a nice clean, clear, sounding pickup with a little bit of thump to it. I see you mentioned the combo of S-5 and Jazzy Cats. I thought Klein said the S-5 or Jazzy Cats couldn't be mixed and matched ( could be wrong). How'd you pull that off?

  • @NOLA2828 The best klein pickup in my opinion is the black one clone pickups that are only available through my website. If you dont want to spend the money I suggest the regular S-5 pickups. But you cant go wrong with any klein pickup if you ask me. They 65's are awesome for hendrix stuff.

  • @libertyfalls What's your web address ?

  • love the wall poster ha :)

  • Awesome demo! How would you compare the accuracy of the Klein S-5's to the JM pickups? Also, to my ears, the neck pickup by itself sounds a lot more "spanky" than I remember it being. Is that how it normally is? I always heard it more hollow sounding than the spanky neck/middle pickup. I play a '75 American Strat with stock pickups. Also, what amp are you playing through? +the settings on the amp. Sorry for all the questions, thank you!

  • @Macgregor17 The Klein S-5's are very close. Not identical but close. I blame the spank on the tiny strings. I think they were light 9's or custom 8's. They were some of the smallest strings Ive played on. Im sure they sound much fatter with 11's. I was playing through a hot rod deluxe special edition brown tolex. Settings: volume 8:00 treble 12:00 mid 10:00 bass 3:00 presence 12:00 reverb 10:00

  • You just played scales for wayy too long. It got a little boring. tone sounds good, but can you play just a little more of gravity and other stuff instead of playing like 30 seconds of it

  • @BW9191 I wanted to play the same type of thing so you could hear the difference. Its a sign of a crappy demo when they play totally different things on different pickups so you have no way of comparing it to itself. Look at parts 2, 3, and 4. It gets a little more entertaining when overdrive is kicked in.

  • Either it's the angle or your hands are massive!!! Are you a tall guy?? Sorry my mind wanders! On topic: the pickups in the Mayer sig are definitely mid-scooped heavily. I personally prefer the sound of the Texas Specials in the "black one". PS: The relicing done to that guitar is absolutely amazing.

  • @Arajus1 Haha. Yeah, my hands are friggin huge. I like the texas specials too. The mayer sig had 9 gague strings and the black one has 11 gauge so there was a little difference there. They both sound good though.
